INTRODUCTION TO GOAL SETTING
"Goals provide a sense of direction and purpose"
Goal setting involves establishingspecific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-targeted (S.M.A.R.T) objectives.
Also in a team, goal setting has theadvantages of encouragingparticipants to put in substantial
effort; and, because every memberhas defined expectations set uponhim or her, little room is left forinadequate effort going unnoticed.

LOCKE'SGOAL SETTINGTHEORY
A goal serves as a motivator because it allows people to compare their current
performance with that required t o achieve the goal.
If people miss the goal, they feel dissatisfied and strive to improve their performance
to meet it.
Employees are motivated by clear goals and appropriate feedback.
There is a relationship between how difficult and specific a goal is and people's
performance ofa task.
Specific and difficult goals lead to better task performance than vague or easy goals.
The goal itself is not the motivator, but rather the perceived difference between what
is actually attained and what had been planned for.

LIMITATIONS
Goal setting can fail if
The employee lacks the skills to perform the actions necessary to achieve the goals
These actions need a considerable amount of learning, which increases the time
and resources considerably needed to achieve the goals
The goal setting system is just misused (as every system can be misused) or leads to
appraising the wrong behavior (like misuse)
A goal of a manager may not align with the goals of the organization as a whole =>
the goals of an individual may conflict with the employing organization =>
performance may suffer
For complex tasks, goal-setting may actual impair performance. In these situations,
an individual may become preoccupied with meeting the goals, rather than performing
tasks.
Implicit learning may be inhibited. This is because goal setting may encourage simple
focus on an outcome without openness to exploration, understanding or growth.

achieve. Mean goals are used as a means to achieve
the end goal.
