� Believed in democracy and wanted to make it stronger in Mexico

� From exile in the US, Madero called for an armed rebellion.

� Victoriano Huerta, Madero’s own military general took over with the help of USA� (had Madero assassinated)

� People did not like him. Felt he was a puppet of America.

� Known as the usurper (traitor) of Mexico

� PanchoVilla and Emiliano Zapata took up arms against Huerta as well.

Struggle for Power� Villa and Zapata allied with

Venustiano Carranza to overthrow Huerta.

� Carranza took power and then turned on Villa and Zapata � Why do you think he

decided to turn on (betray) Villa and Zapata?

� Carranza lured Zapata into a trap and murdered him

� He believed in Democracy but not for land reform

New Constitution� Adopted new Constitution that promoted education,

LAND REFORM, and worker’s rights.

� Carranza did not support the final version because he did not agree with land reform.

� He was overthrown in 1920 by one of his generals, Alvaro Obregon.

� Obregon brought peace and stability to Mexico by giving the Mexican people what they wanted, LAND!

� He signed a treaty with PanchoVilla, ending the Mexican Revolution
