WHY WE RUN THIS PARTICULAR DEFENSE AT GMC:

    I. PERSONNEL (WHAT WE LOOK FOR IN EACH POSITION):

NOSE= Possibly your best Defensive Lineman. He can ensure double teams, cause

havoc, and has to be accounted for. The strength of the defensive has to start upfront with a dominating Nose player.

ENDS= First and foremost, these individuals have to be able to run extremely well.

They have to big enough in order to take on blockers and be a dominant force on the

    edge.

MIKE= Your most instinctive LB (the QB of the Linebacker corp). He must be

responsible for setting the strength of the defensive front (Rip & Liz) call.

SAM & WILL= Usually your bigger and more athletic type of individual for thisposition (equal to a Sam or Will in a 4-3 scheme). They must be able to play man

coverage on a RB and get into coverage when playing zone.

DOGS= More of a Strong Safety type of individual or even a very physical Corner. Has

to be an extremely effective blitzer and run stopper. He has to posses the cover skills

in order to play man coverage on a #2 Receiver. He has to be a great underneath 3

deep player as well. Finally, he also has to be able to play in a Cover 4.

FS= Has to be an extremely smart football player. Must be an excellent tackler and

posses the coverage skills to play man. He must be able to cover ground as a deep

    middle defender.

CORNER= They are your cover guys!! They must have a short memory and want to

be a player that is challenged each and every play. He also must be able to play zone

    coverage extremely well.

    II. PHILOSOPHY:

We are an attacking, pressure oriented defense. We are able to bring either 3,4,5,

or 6 man pressure on any given snap. We want a defense that will SWARM to

the ball on every snap. We will have safety in numbers in order to be effective ondefense. We want the defense to have an element of surprise for our opponent by

being able to bring pressure in a variety of different ways. We will focus on

creating and causing turnovers to ensure our success. We will enter each and

every game with the ultimate goal of shutting down our opponents running game.

We are a defense that is designed to stop the run first. We will mix up our

coverage and front packages so that to cause confusion for our opponents QB.Finally, we want to limit our opponents to 10 points or less a game.

    III. RULE BUSTER FOR OFFENSES:

    - Forces offenses to form new blocking rules

    - We present a 3 Linebacker scheme with no 3 Technique (only in our 4 man fronts)- Both Offensive Guards are uncovered which causes confusion

    - Creates a what if mentality because they have to account for all 5 players on

the second level. Offenses must account for the Dog position.

    IV. MATCHES OFFENSES PERSONNEL:

Our defense allows us to put speed on the field that we feel enables us to

match up against varying offensive personnel and formations. We face more

and more spread offenses, and we believe that this defense allows us tomatch up extremely well. In turn, we can match up well versus offenses that

want to put several RBs or TEs into the game as well. We will go to our

multiple 4 man fronts and stack our players into the box.

    V. KEEP IT SIMPLE:

We believe that we have an extremely simple defense in regards to our

terminology and coverage packages. We must keep it simple so our players

do not have to think and can just run to the ball.

    COVERAGE PACKAGES

We use a number and coloring system in order to determine what type of coverage we willexecute. We are basically a man and 3 deep coverage team. However, we will also play a

two deep shell and play our Quarters coverage. The numbering system that we use

indicates our man coverages. Black, Brown, & Blue (All B words) also indicate man

coverages. All of our other colors indicate to our players that we will be playing some type

of zone coverage with certain blitz packages
