RAFFLESATURDAY, MARCH 7, 4:00 PM

ARIZONA AMERICANITALIAN CLUB

7509 NORTH 12TH STREETPHOENIX, ARIZONA

It has been a great year at AFC. Itis time to bring together our clubmembers, family, and guests forfun, food, and raffle prizes. If youare new to the club and have notbeen to an annual banquet, it isone of our premier events.

We will be at the Arizona AmericanItalian Club, conveniently locatedon 12th Street, just a few blockssouth of Northern Avenue, on Saturday, March 7. Doors will open at 4:00. Abuffet dinner will be served around 6:00.

The success of our banquet depends entirely on your donations. It is time toclean out your garages and fly fishing closets. Handcrafted items also aregreatly appreciated by your fellow members. Don't forget about gift cards andgift baskets. Remember this is a critical fundraiser for the club. AFC cannotoperate without your support. We need every member to make raffledonations. You can bring your donations to the February general meeting. Ifyou need help making donations or cannot make one of the general meetings, contact any board member and they will be glad to assist. We also need everymember to dip into their pockets and buy raffle tickets at the banquet.

Back by popular demand: the Special Wine & Liquor Surprise! Here’s how itworks: members are encouraged to donate bottles of wine or liquor worth atleast $20 at the February general meeting. Each donated bottle will be placedin an opaque “mystery” bag, and each mystery bag will then be available forpurchase at the banquet for $20. You know when you buy a mystery bag for$20, you are getting a bottle worth at least $20, and it could be worthconsiderably more! The last step is to take home the bottle and enjoy yoursurprise! The proceeds will support the club’s activities and causes such as our

Tickets are still $40 per person. Children 12 and under are $20. You may payat the February general meeting by cash, check, or credit card. See DavidMayl or Don Mickus at the membership table. Any board member will alsoaccept your payment. A list of board members and their phone numbers is onthe website. You also may mail a check to Arizona Flycasters Club, P.O. Box47357, Phoenix, AZ 85068. Or you can pay on the website.

BRING YOUR SPOUSE OR SIGNIFICANT OTHER!

Last year we had a large number of non-fishing raffle prizes: jewelry, artwork, and lodging to name just a few. This year we expect to have even more non-fishing raffle prizes that would appeal to a spouse or significant other who doesnot spend a lot of time on the water. We also are working on reducing theoverall length of the banquet and speeding up the raffle so that you will havemore time to socialize.

So what can you donate? We all think about possibly donating a fly rod orsome other item of equipment. However, there are other things that will makesomebody very happy.

Do you own a boat? Consider donating a day on the water in your boat. Youmay meet a new fishing partner. What about a timeshare or condo that you willnot use next year? A week or even a weekend would make a great donation.Does your occupation involve a special skill or service? One memberdonated free tax preparation. Do you have a favorite guide, lodge, or cabinoperator who might be willing to donate a free day or weekend? Many retailerswill donate to a charitable club. We have contacted all the fishing stores. However, the next time you are at your favorite restaurant, golf course, barbershop, beauty salon, or car repair garage, why not ask them for a donation? A 2for 1, percentage discount, or gift card makes a great donation.

Donations can be tax deductible. Thank you letters (stating that AFC is a501(c)(3) corporation) can be obtained from Don Mickus at the monthlymeetings. Time is winding down to make your donations. Our Annual Banquet& Raffle is an important fundraiser for our club. Please consider makingdonations if you haven’t already. Also, please don’t forget to buy yourtickets. Thank you for supporting AFC!

Hook: TMC 200R sizes 6 - 10Thread: Black 6/0Tail: Deer hairBody: Antron in yellow, olive, white, or blackWing: Deer hairBullet head/over wing: Deer hairLegs: Rubber in white, yellow, or black

1. Begin the fly by placing the debarbed hook in the vise and starting thethread towards the front of the hook.

2. Cut, clean, and stack a small clump of deer hair. Tie in towards the front ofthe hook, and wrap back over it so there is some bulk for the body.

3. Now tie in the antron at the front of the body. Wrap back over it to the tailand back to the front of the body. Wrap the antron to the thread, forming asmooth body.

4. Cut, clean, and stack another small clump of deer hair for the underwing. Tie this in in front of the body, making it about even with the length of thetail.

5. Next, advance the thread to just behind the eye. Cut, clean, and stackanother clump of deer hair for the bullet head and over wing. You will need tomeasure this so that the deer hair is long enough for the wing and able to formthe bullet head. Tie this clump of deer hair with the tips facing over the eye ofthe hook. Wrap back over the butts towards the under wing until the body isreached. Trim the butts so that there is a clear area for the bullet head to beformed.

6. For the bullet head, use your fingers to pull the hair back over the fly. Makesure you can see the eye of the hook. Make several wraps of thread at thispoint to secure the hair. Trim the hair off the bottom of the fly so that there isonly hair on top. Tie in one rubber leg on each side of the fly so that the frontlegs extend beyond the hook and the rear legs extend beyond the tail. Whipfinish and trim the thread.

Developed by Doug Swisher as a hopper pattern for trout in the Bitterroot Riverin southwestern Montana, the Madam X also can be used a dry fly attractorpattern. It imitates grasshoppers, stoneflies, damselflies, and other largeinsects. The Madam X casts and floats well and is easy to see (as a variation, you can tie a parachute post with hackle around it like a Parachute Adams, which increases buoyancy and visibility). This fly is a fine choice in summermonths when big bugs are abundant and when fishing hopper-dropper
