SAFETY INFORMATION

Safe and Efficient Operation of MotorolaTwo-Way Radios

This section provides information and instructions forthe safe and efficient operation of Motorola MobileTwo-Way Radios.

For information regarding radio use in hazardousareas, please refer to the Factory Mutual (FM)approval manual supplement or Instruction Cardwhich is included with radio models that offer thiscapability.

Exposure To Radio Frequency Energy

National and International Standards andGuidelines

Your Motorola Two-Way Radio, which generates andradiates radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic energy(EME) is designed to comply with the following Nationaland International Standards and Guidelines regardingexposure of human beings to radio frequencyelectromagnetic energy:

• Federal Communications Commission Report andOrder No. FCC 96-326 (August 1996)

• American National Standards Institute(C95.1 - 1992)

• National Council on Radiation Protection andMeasurements (NCRP - 1986)

• International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radi-ation Protection (ICNRP - 1986)

• European Committee for ElectrotechnicalStandardisation (CENELEC)

To assure optimal radio performance and thathuman exposure to radio frequency electromagneticenergy is within the guidelines set forth in the abovestandards, always adhere to the followingprocedures:

• ENV. 50166-11995 E

Human Exposure to Electro-magnetic Fields Low Fre-quency (0Hz to 10kHz)

• ENV. 50166-21995 E

Human Exposure to Electro-magnetic Fields High Fre-quency (10kHz to 300GHz)

Electromagnetic Interference/Compatibility

Note: Nearly every electronic device issusceptible to electromagnetic interference(EMI) if inadequately shielded, designed orotherwise configured for electromagneticcompatibility.

To avoid electromagnetic interference and/orcompatibility conflicts, turn off your radio in anyfacility where posted notices instruct you to do so.Hospitals or health care facilities may be usingequipment that is sensitive to external RF energy. When instructed to do so, turn off your radio whenon board an aircraft. Any use of a radio must be inaccordance with airline regulations or crewinstructions.

Operational Warnings

Vehicles With an Air Bag

Do not place communications equipment in the areaover an air bag or in the air bag deployment area. Airbags inflate with great force. If communicationsequipment is placed in the air bag deployment areaand the air bag inflates, it may be propelled withgreat force and cause serious injury to occupants ofthe vehicle.

Potentially Explosive Atmospheres

Turn off your two-way radio when you are in anyarea with a potentially explosive atmosphere.Sparks in a potentially explosive atmosphere cancause an explosion or fire resulting in bodily injury oreven death.

Blasting Caps and Areas

To avoid possible interference with blastingoperations, turn off your radio when you are nearelectrical blasting caps, in a blasting area, or inareas posted: “Turn off two-way radio.” Obey allsigns and instructions.

Note:The areas with potentially explosive atmospheresreferred to above include fueling areas such as:below decks on boats; fuel or chemical transfer orstorage facilities; areas where the air containschemicals or particles, such as grain, dust or metalpowders; and any other area where you wouldnormally be advised to turn off your vehicle engine.Areas with potentially explosive atmospheres areoften but not always posted.

Mobile Radio Operation and EME Exposure

To assure optimal radio performance and thathuman exposure to radio frequency electromagneticenergy is within the guidelines referenced earlier inthis document, transmit only when people insideand outside the vehicle are at least the minimumdistance away from a properly installed, externallymounted antenna.Table 1 lists the minimum distance for severaldifferent ranges of radiated power.

Mobile Antenna Installation

Install the vehicle antenna external to the vehicleand in accordance with:

• The requirements of the antenna manufacturer/supplier

• Instructions in the Radio Installation Manual

Control Station Operation

When radio equipment is used to operate as acontrol station, it is important that the antennabe installed outside the building and away fromplaces where people may be in close proximity.Refer to Table 1 for rated power and minimumdistant values for transmitting antennas.
