Festival Funny Folk!

Two-handed stand-up comedy – where two comedians are onstage at the same time – is a bit of a trick. It’s also a rare thing. It takes a special comedic relationship. Every now and again it happens and when it does you get twice the laughs, twice the drama, and twice the excitement. Glover & Sorrensen are a two-handed stand-up comedy act that combines the talents of two of Australia’s most experienced comedians – Alan Glover and S Sorrensen. Both have toured the country separately featuring at comedy clubs and festivals but now their coming together as a double act has generated a lot excitement – and for Alan and S themselves (who are as unsure of what will happen next on stage as the audience is!). Glover & Sorrensen feature both comedians on stage at the same time bouncing off each other (verbally mostly; physically sometimes) combining their wealth of material with unpredictable, spontaneous improvisation. This makes every show unique. The audience is a big part of the fun. They help create the show. Glover & Sorrensen reflect the festival back to the audience, feed off the audience and together they create a bubble of spontaneous fun.Glover & Sorrensen have performed their shows at the National, Illawarra, Cobargo, Woodford, Port Fairy, Yackandandah, Yungaburra Folk Festivals as well as clubs and pubs all over this wide, drying land. Glover & Sorrensen are funny. In fact, with two stand-up comedians on stage at the same time, it’s twice as funny. With lots of improvisation, this show feeds off the audience with hilarious and unpredictable results.S Sorrensen, lives on the North Coast of NSW. He is not a hippie... okay, just a bit his flashing wit and sense of being born into a world he never created, has made his comedy as thoughtful as it is funny. S has been seen on TV (Voices - ABC, Quantum - ABC, Nearly Normal Nimbin - SBS, Pizza - SBS) as well as numerous performances on regional and national radio. He has performed all over Oz as a poet and comedian at festivals clubs pubs and weird places like writers’ centres and university refectories.Alan Glover - been a standup comedian since 1983, working all over Australia and internationally including Singapore, the USA, New Zealand and Europe.Apart from countless comedy clubs and pubs, Alan has performed at many Festivals including the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, Sydney Comedy Festival, Newcastle Fringe Festival, and folk festivals all over this wide funny landFront cover photograph by Prem Samira in Bermagui at the Cobargo Folk Festival 2013.

Jackson comes home for his final public pluck! He’s played live to more Australian kids than the Wiggles, released 36 albums, and even coached Prime Minister Julia Gil-lard on the intricacies of the ukulele; and now – after 40 years as a travelling entertainer and music teacher - he’s giving up plucking in public.

He is the highly acclaimed children’s entertainer, author, composer and multi-instrumentalist, Mike Jackson (no not the Thriller guy) and he is set to give his final concert at the Na-tional Folk Festival in Canberra at Easter.

Jackson, a household name with performances of hit kid’s songs Bananas in Pyjamas and Dr Knickerbocker, has performed on stages and television screens across Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and the UK – but says he wants his farewell con-cert in Canberra.

“Although I’ve played all over Australia and I’m now living in Victoria, Canberra has always been my spiritual home, and it’s also where my career began; so this is my coming home and completing the circle.”

Jackson has released 36 albums – with ‘Playmates’ reaching Platinum status and Bunyips, Bunnies and Brumbies, Dances for Little Kids and Ain’t it Great to Be Crazy achieving Gold.

He calculates that he’s played to over 3 million children live in his touring school shows, and reached many more millions via his records and television appearances.

He featured in an ABC for Kids video and on ABC TV shows: Playmates, My Squiggle, and Alexander Bunyips Billabong & is known for his witty, intelligent lyrics, his warm engaging manner & his gift for being silly. “I basically go for the funny bone, littering my performances with bits of useful information & peppering them with lots of humour, funny songs & silly ideas.”

Update on this year's National Folk Festival International folk superstars from around the world will headline this year’s National Folk Festival, which will also pay tribute to our National Capital in its centenary year.

Irish singer/songwriters Paul Brady and Andy Irvine, whose self titled 1976 recording is regarded as one of the best folk al-bums of all time, will headline the 47th festival, being held at Canberra’s Exhibition Park for five days at Easter.

Joining Brady and Irvine are the cream of Australian and international folk and roots music, including, Seth Lakeman (UK) Finbar Furey (Ire), Kieran Kane (US) and David Francey (Canada), David Olney and Sergio Webb (USA), Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas (Scot/USA), James Keelaghan (Can), Apodimi Compania (Greece) the London Klezmer Quartet (UK), Jordie Lane (Aust), Damian Howard Band (Aust), Husky (Aust) Himmerland (Denmark), Chris Smither (USA), Southland (Ire) Red Molly (US) + many, many more.

What makes the National unique from other festivals is the chance to not only watch, but to meet, sing, dance and play along with the festival stars in venues like the Bohemia Bar or the world-famous festival Session Bar.

Established Canberra performers like Julia and the Deep Sea Sirens, Shortis and Simpson, Wiradjuri Echoes, Franklyn B Paverty and the Bush Capital Band will join emerging acts like the Miss Chiefs, Hashemoto, Burley Griffin and Son of Rut in recognition of the capital’s rich musical heritage.

“Artistic Program Manager Pam Merrigan has done an amazing job putting together a program of this quality & depth in her first year in the job,” said Festival Director Sebastian Flynn.

“We have made a number of exciting improvements to the festival site which will make it more accessible to our patrons, par-ticularly the inclusion of a number of new smaller, more intimate venues around the site,” he said.

“This is a fantastic festival, particularly for people with children who would like them to experience a wide range of music, dance & street theatre in a safe & friendly environment”.

For the first time this year, people can bring children under seven at no cost, young people from 7-15 qualify for children’s prices & there’s a special “season of day” passes available before the end of January which allows people to come with three friends for one day, or one friend for two days

Our early-bird sales close on 24 March, when tickets go to gate prices. Tickets can be purchased through our website folkfesti-val.org.au or by calling: 1300 235 849

The call and response song is the most ancient form of musical communication. It is common in old ballads and nursery songs, and like them, sea shanties tap into a primitive part of the brain. Do you remember the first time you heard a sea shanty? Did it evoke a 'wow' response? It's not like country music, is it? The sea shanties, as we know them, evolved in a relatively short period when sailing vessels worked on the com-mercial routes between Europe and North America. They were work songs sung to sychronise the tasks of hauling up anchor, heaving on the capstan, raising sails, manning the pumps, etc. The different rhythms and short lines made them easy to remember. The forms lent themselves to flexible interpreta-tion and improvisation and you only sang them until the job was done. While they died out as work songs with the advent of steam ships, shanties are still sung in the west for pleas-ure - and are especially popular in the Netherlands, Germany and Poland. And they are still used in communities that have a traditional life style, for example among the fishermen hauling up menhaden fish in the waters off North Carolina.

Come and join in the shanty session on Thursday 7th March where members of the Roaring Forties will be singing some of the first shanties they learned. This year, the Forties celebrate 25 years of singing together - shanties have always been at the heart of their repertoire and the fellowship the songs engender keeps the group together. Check out their updated website: www.roaringfortiesfolk.com.

Participation is the key. Being call and response songs, of course you get to join in and please bring your own contribu-tions to lead. Song books are available if you need the words. Aim to arrive from 7.30 and the singing will get underway by 8pm. There’s a break for supper and more singing until about 10.30pm. A great night for less than $10, less if you’re a mem-ber of the Sydney Heritage Fleet - see www.shf.org.au/Applica-tion/Application.html

The 138-year old square rigger, James Craig, is moored at Wharf 7 (58 Pirrama Road, Pyrmont) between the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Foxtel Building. You can get there by walking over the Pyrmont Bridge from Market Street or getting the light rail to Pyrmont Bay station. If you're coming by car, parking is sometimes possible at the Australian National Maritime Museum but is subject to availability. Phone Mike Richter 0419 992 119 or email [email protected] for more information on the parking. And email Mike if you want to be advised of future Shanty sessions. We aim to hold them on the first Thursday of the month.

News From the Loaded DogLoaded Dog's rent doubles but entry ONLY rises by $5!Unfortunately Leichhardt Council decided that hire rates for

all Council halls should be at the same rate. Over the decades the Annandale Neighbourhood Centre Management Commit-tee had served it's local community faithfully, offering extra discounts as appropriate & amassed a substantial bank balance even though it offered discounted rent to local groups.

So our rent, at the new community rate is now $135, rather than $68 per night, & entry to the Dog rises $5 from $15/13 to $18/20 from February 2013.

Jackson recalls singing Going on a Bear Hunt with the full Royal Australian Air Force Band, recording Lord of The Dance with a full brass band in the prestige Festival Records studio in Sydney and the first time he ever sang in public at Canberra’s Yarralumla Woolshed, as a few special moments.

“I still love what I do, but there comes a time, and I’d like to go out while I’m still on top and doing what I do well.”

Mike Jackson has earned himself a reputation as a skil-ful ukulele teacher, having produced dozens of learning resources and thousands of workshops at Australian schools, kindergartens and music festivals. One of Mike’s more prominent moments of informal tuition was showing Premier Julia Gillard a few chops on the Uku-lele, on her recent visit to the Woodford Folk Festival over Christmas!

Employing his personally developed teaching method, which uses a simple coloured dot system, Jackson claims he can get anybody playing the Ukulele within 5 mins – including the PM who modestly claims to be from one of the less musical families in Wales!

“Parents are just gob-smacked by the quick results be-cause most think their kids could play an instrument only after years of lessons,” Mike said.

Jackson was also one of the country’s first children’s entertainers to appear as a paid performer on the Austral-ian folk festival circuit and was a big name during the development stages of the ‘kids festival’ phenomenon at major Australian Folk Festivals.

“During the sixties folk revival era, the folk scene was full of uni-students & artists, and it was rare to see chil-dren at folk festivals. By the mid 70’s you could find the occasional performance for kids, & by the 80’s it became an absolute must.”

“The first time I stood on stage at the National Folk Fes-tival in 1974, I had no idea I could actually make a full time living from music.”

Mike Jackson farewells 40 years on the big stage this Easter at National Folk Festival.

(Canada), Kieran Kane and Lucas Kane (US), with Kane Welch Kap-lin (US) - kick off their Australian tour at The Barn at Mulloon Creek Natural Farms, Bungendore, on Sat-urday 2nd March. They’re one of Nashville’s favourite contemporary Americana bands, playing a unique style of music incorporating blues, country and folk.

The farm will be open from 6.30pm, with Go Jane Go taking to the stage at 8pm. Pack a picnic, drinks and great friends and enjoy the ambience of this beauti-ful farm valley. There’s a large open grill for BBQing, and you can pick up supplies on your way through Bungendore and support the local community.

Mulloon Creek Natural Farms is an outstanding example of organic, free range, ethical farming. It is open to the public a few times each year for field days.

Tickets are $48 and can be purchased online at www.themullooninstitute.org or by calling Nicole on 0408 584 900.

Notes, Newtown Closed!Notes, Newtown suddenly

closed in early February. All shows originally scheduled there had to be moved - at very short notice, writes John Gallagher.

Some have been moved to Blue Beat, Double Bay, which is an excellent new venue run by Chris Richards, who ran The Base-ment for many years. It could be described as being like The Base-

ment, only much better! John understands the food is very good. There is plenty of parking on the local streets, as well as a Wilson’s car park nearby.

Most of the others have been moved to the Cat and Fiddle, Balmain. If you have already booked tickets for any of these shows, you will be noti-

fied by Oztix about the changes. Don't be concerned, John says - all bookings are secure. If the show you have booked for has been moved to Blue Beat, everything remains the same, except the venue. Your bookings, whether dinner and show or general admission, will be honoured at Blue Beat.

For all shows moved to the Cat and Fiddle all tickets will be refunded. For Abi-gail Washburn on 6th March, general admission tickets can be booked (see Dates For Your Diary). For all the other shows moving to the Cat and Fiddle, all tickets will be at the door on the night, and at a lower price than they were at Notes.

ABC television to feature Cole’s WoolshedCole’s Woolshed and the Camperdown community will be on show when

ABC’s Landline comes on March 7 to film a performance of The Man They Call The Banjo.

Tim Lee from ABC televeison, Landline contacted Felix Meagher (composer of The Man They Call The Banjo) expressing excitment at filming a performance of the show at a venue of national interest. The tel-evison crew will film the rehearsal during the afternoon, and will as unobtrusively as possible film the pre-show entertainment – a tour of the woolshed and the shearing of a sheep to poetry recited by Colin Driscoll, and the show itself. The following day the Tim will interview various members of the Banjo cast.

Szőttes Hungarian Dance Ensemble

On Saturday 2nd March, 25 danc-ers and four musicians direct from Bratislava will present a concert and a táncház (dance), at DMSZ South Hungarian Club, 31 Glendenning Road, Glendenning. The Szőttes Dance Ensemble (www.szottes.sk) represents the Hungarian minority in Slovakia and performs traditional dance to live music from the Hungarian community in Slo-vakia, Hungary and Transylvania. They are performing once only in Sydney - this is not to be missed!

There will be a Kids dance work-shop, 5.30-6.30pm, taught by the Szőttes dancers to live music for kids from 5 to 15 years old. The concert, "While the memory of it remains" (7-9pm), is a glimpse into rural life across Slovakia, Hungary and Transylvania. With over 20 dancers and live music, the violins, visuals and dynamic dance take you to another world! It will be fol-lowed at 9.30 by the Táncház - a chance to stay around and meet, dance and party with Szőttes, with music provided by Szőttes and The Transylvaniacs. This is when those spontaneous inspirational moments occur. Unreserved seating. Get there early to find your own table. $25, $20 concession, $50 family, $5 children under 15, children under 5 free. Dinner bookings, $12, are essen-tial. Refreshments and alcoholic bever-ages are available at club prices. Dinner bookings, and info, Sally Corry 9591 9885, [email protected]

Chris Smither – Hundred Dollar valentine(Signature Sounds 2012)Before rock music found a way to make listeners sad in novel ways, there was country and the blues. Chris Smither has been making quietly successful, powerful songs to make you wistful since 1970. Morrissey and countless Emo bands could learn a thing or two by listening to Smither’s entire catalog, and Hundred Dollar Valentine’s is as good a place as any to start. Here, he sings about life, loss, and regret just like he’s successfully done for the past 30 years.Chris Smither doesn’t sing about a happy life, but that’s not really what he’s really about (the blues aren’t about sunshine, and country isn’t about happy relationships). Hundred Dol-lar Valentine is the embodiment of melancholia. Smither has sung about times gone by and regrets before now—see his previous thirteen albums—but there’s something about this particular one that cuts. You might remember the 2006 album Leave the Light On. Here, he revisits the titular track and borrows his own melody and music for the fantastic track “What They Say”:

They say the good die young but it ain’t certain I’ve been good all day

I ain’t hurt nothing anyway I’m too old to die young

Chris Smither sees the end in sight and he’s not certain how he feels about it. He hasn’t hurt anyone, necessarily, but he hasn’t been a sweet little lamb. “Feeling by Degrees” explores the imminence of death and feelings of, not-quite ambivalence. There’s fear there and acceptance and every

pluck of the guitar strings twinges your heart. There’s a ton of artists out there that don’t make you feel any-thing, even if they’re good. But that’s what Smither excels at: You feel what he’s feeling (or what you think he’s feeling, anyway). He punches you in the face with pure emotion. This isn’t a trip where you come out smiling, but you’ve also never felt so good feeling so miserable. There’s nothing new here [well, this is Smither’s first album of all originals; that’s pretty new -ed], but you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. The wheel was a pretty good invention, and Hundred Dollar Valentine is a damned good album.(Reprinted from Driftwood Magazine)
