festivals and events Majors Creek Folk FestivalBlues diva Kristina Olsen to headline Majors Creek Festival in November!

Kristina Olsen, the award-winning Californian singer-songwriter with a big bluesy voice, is well-known to Australian folk and blues audiences. She has spent a lot of time in this country over the years, but this is her first visit to Ma-jors Creek, and festival organisers are delighted to have her on the program.

Kristina Olsen hails from Haight-Ashbury’s (San Francisco) bustling and eclec-tic, flower-power 1960’s. Her material ranges from contemporary folk, blues to swing jazz, and ranges across lilting ballads to raunch and roll. She is a superb multi-instrumentalist (acoustic guitar, steel-body slide guitar, saxophone, con-certina and piano) with a compelling stage presence that is enhanced by her ‘real life’ storytelling.

With international musicians including Eric Bibb, Fairport Convention, Mary Coughlan, Mollie O’Brien and Maddy Prior among others, covering her songs, Kristina Olsen is recognised and appreciated by her musical peers for fine craftsmanship, musicianship and the ability to ‘touch the heart and soul’ with her superb lyrics and melodies. As well as a number of performances, Kristina will also share her extensive musical knowledge at a couple of workshops over the weekend.

Joining Kristina on festival stages are Canberra/Queanbeyan’s own son, Owen Campbell, just home after a long US tour; rising star Heath Cullen who recently recorded with Elvis Costello’s band, The Imposters, and toured with The Waifs and Joe Henry; and that much-loved, dynamic Celtic band from the Illawarra, Riogh.

More than 50 performers from around the country will strut their stuff over the weekend and the new committee expects record crowds as this friendly little festival returns after a three-year break.

There will be something for everyone, as usual: superb music, dance, poetry and a kids’ festival. Emerging young musicians will share the stage with some of the best in folk, bluegrass, blues, roots and world music.

Majors Creek Festival is just 10 minutes from Braidwood and a little over an hour from Canberra and Batemans Bay. Free camping is available on site.

The Festival opens at 5pm Friday 21 November and runs until late afternoon Sunday 23 November. Tickets are on sale from the festival website now.

For a full list of performers, and further festival information including ticketing, go to the festival website http://majorscreekfestival.org

The BMC @ Kangaroo valley Folk FestivalYou are very likely to find members of the Bush Music Club making valuable contributions to most folk festivals in Australia and last weekend's fabulous Kangaroo Valley Folk Festival was no exception.

Percussion group at the Bush Music Club Saplings SessionThe aim of the Saplings is to encourage children to learn songs and tunes that are a part of our Australian heritage. The Sap-lings had the opportunity to play and sing, as well as learn about some of the bush instruments, including banjo, concertina, lagerphone, bones & spoons. We had a good turnout of young ones, some of which who brought along their own instruments.

We had a very talented young concertina player come along, Declan, who has a very good ear for picking up tunes. Declan is one to listen out for if you ever get the opportunity! Look out for him at future festival blackboard concerts!

Works of John Dengate ConcertA wonderful concert dedicated to the works of John Dengate. Close friend of John Dengate and John Meredith, Chris Woodland, acted as emcee.

The Roweth Family, David Johnson, Margaret Bradford & Ralph Pride, all performed several of John Dengate’s songs.

A couple of books of John’s drawings were handed around the audience to have a look at throughout.

Lots of stories, laughs and music, and a beau-tiful rendition of Bare Legged Kate to close the show, it was something special to be a part of.

AshCappella – Has It Been Fifteen Years?”Has it really been fifteen years for this choir?

We are still going strong, after a couple of incarnations, including as the Bright Star Singers and now as AshCappella, a reflec-tion of the Inner West community where we have our practises.

Recently we have been rocked by some major adjustments to our line-up due to retirements and relocations (tree/sea changes), unavoidable work re-assignments, some health problems, and one of our migrant members finally getting approval to practise medicine (at all hours!) in Australia -- we certainly can’t begrudge her the op-portunity, but we do miss her.

So I am writing to ask if there are any folkies out there who’d like to be part of a small and friendly group of singers. You’d be more than welcome to give us a go, and all we ask is that you enjoy singing as much as we do.

Our play list includes Australian folk songs (traditional, contemporary and songs with appropriate references to Aboriginal cul-ture), our signature do-wops, world music, pop songs and some classical songs – something for everyone! We also sing quite a few songs about social justice issues.

Speaking of social justice -- if you’d like to see us in action, you could try a YouTube clip:- SydneyVision 2014, with the song, Just One Drop. AshCappella, along with friends from other choirs, were part of this annual event with a song about people power.

We meet Monday nights in Ashfield, near the train station. We start as close to 6.30 as possible, and finish before 8.30. For more details: 0402 961 329.

Junior FleadhSydney’s next generation of Irish musi-cians in the making!

The Junior Fleadh is a new event in Sydney where children are taught and play Irish music together, in a way that is fun for kids. It has already been so successful that some of the children from Junior Fleadh will do a spot at a concert fundraiser at the Gaelic Club, with some of our best Irish musicians.

At the Junior Fleadh about 20 children and young people come along for a few hours on a Sunday, every couple of months. They are taught tunes together by skilled Irish music teachers, have a different instrument demonstrated each time (recently harp, pipes), play what they can in an easy session, and can even do some Irish dancing if they want. Plus there is pizza.

“I knew that a lot of the musicians in Sydney have children that they have been teaching at home, but these kids never met each other or learnt tunes together. It's been great to see how much they enjoy sharing tunes, plus the parents have really got together to help run the day,” said Chris Ghent, the musician who organised the first Junior Fleadh a year ago.

“It's gone so well, you can see the next generation of Irish musicians in Sydney just coming together before your eyes. The older ones are already playing some really good music, and you can see they will just get better. There was even a Junior Fleadh at a festival in Yass recently, funded by the Irish Consulate,” said Chris.

The Irish concert and fundraiser will be at the Gaelic Club in Sydney on Saturday 8th November from 7.30pm. With Senior All-Ireland concertina champion Mairead Hurley from Sligo,

and her band Restless Legs, featuring fiddler Louise Phelan (Co Laois) and the brilliant local Ben Stephenson, flute and guitar. Plus Fiona McVicar & Ken O’Neill, with great songs and tunes.

We expect some set dancing and some

of the kids from Junior Fleadh will do a guest spot. Funds raised support Irish music lessons and the Junior Fleadh. Children can come along to the concert for free, adults $15.

A number of the concert performers also teach at the Junior Fleadh, and the next one will be held on Sunday 2nd November from 10.30am to 2.30pm. There is no cost for children to attend the Junior Fleadh; costs are covered by money raised at the concert.

For more about the Irish concert on 8th November, 0435 240 844.

For Junior Fleadh information, 2nd Nov, 0422 203 892 or 0402 411 552.

A Taste of Italy in MudgeeMartenitsa and Mara! band will per-form the beautiful Italian song cycle 'Tra Parole e Silenzio' (Between Words and Music) on Saturday 15th Novem-ber. The songs take you on a journey of the heart, based on the poignant poetry of the late human rights lawyer Eduardo di Giovanni. The music was composed by acclaimed members of the jazz-world fusion band, Mara! (www.maramusic.com.au).

Mara! ensemble's Paul Cutlan, Sandy Evans, Lloyd Swanton, Llew Kiek and Mara Kiek perform together with the joyous voices of Martenitsa choir and the extraordinary vocals of Silvia Entcheva.

Mara! and Martenitsa have toured mu-sic festivals in Europe and Australia. They hope to bring the Italian suite to Italy in 2015.

This concert is set in the grounds of Di Lusso Estate (Eurunderee Road, Mudgee), one of Australia's most pic-turesque wineries, overlooking vine-yards, olive groves and bocce courts; and producing a wide range of Italian varietal wines. Enjoy the concert with canapés, aperitif, dinner, a complimen-tary glass of wine and a cheese platter.

The event runs from 7 to 10.30pm, and costs $85, $70 for pensioners, or the no alcohol package (such as for young adults), and $45 for under-12s. Book-ings, stickytickets.com.au/18.

Folk Music in the BushWould you believe it?

Folk Music is alive and well in Dubbo, gateway to outback NSW.

Dubbo Folk Club Inc meets monthly for an afternoon of acoustic music, where traditional, contemporary and a few (good) self-penned songs and tunes can be heard.

Yes, glimpses of world music, from lusty voices and guitar, harmonica, mandola, mandolin, ukulele, accordion and harp. Local talented folkie and dedicated festival goer, Kath Morgan, is now composing tunes on her harp. Exciting news for Virago, the Club and the community!

Dubbo musos pop up at markets, con-certs, churches, gardens, pubs, clubs and wineries. Almost anywhere, really.

Queuing up for return visits to Dubbo are well-loved performers such as Sonia Bennett, Martyn Wyndham-Read, Christine Wheeler and The Beez. Dubbo was pleased to be included in the 'bush' concert tour of The Spooky Men's Chorale.

Christina Mimmocchi had lots of tonsils warbling for Sing Dubbo in 2012 and negotiations are in progress, with Dana Lyons.

More fine music may be heard in Lithgow, Bathurst (Senor Cabrales), Orange, Millthorpe and Canowindra.

A Grand Folk MusicTour of central western NSW is obviously possible for grey nomads with a musical bent: recommended!

If you are passing through Dubbo, try to use Tom Hanson's method and be in town on the second Sunday of the month.

Dubbo Folk Club meets on the second Sunday of the month, 2.30-5.30pm, usually at The Western Star Hotel, but venues can vary in October and Decem-ber. The Club would very much like to be 'liked' on Facebook!

vALe Mark Doran Some reminiscences from BigrussIt is with a somewhat heavy heart that I have to report the death of our treasurer Mark Doran. Mark Died on Monday October 13th surrounded by his family after a relatively short battle with a very aggressive cancer.

Mark was an old music lover from way back and was our treasurer for a number of years- and a very fine treasurer he was too. He was the initial face of the folk club and was always on the door to collect your money as you entered.

Being the volunteer treasurer of the folk club is an oner-ous task- our turnover is over $400000 per year (we spend nearly all of it) but Mark handled it with finesse and never complained when his treasurer’s duties precluded him from seeing some of the acts at the Folk Festival that he may have wanted to see.

Mark grew up in Cronulla and was an excellent Rugby League player until a series of injuries forced him out of the game. He went to Teachers College and became a teacher for a number of years and then had a variety of occupations including managing the famous Bat and Ball Hotel at Moore Park (I believe I had my first drink (Illegally) at the Bat and Ball)

Mark had an acute awareness of folk music and as he saw most concerts he was a great sounding board on the quality of the artists and concerts. We had many great discussion about the concerts on the way home.

He was thinking and concerned about the Folk Club right up until his death. Peter Butler saw him on the Friday before he died and he put his hand on his knee and said- ‘Don’t let Russell have the cheque book again’. I had got the cheque book off him when he was in hospital to pay some outstand-ing bills (never suspecting what the future held) I happily signed cheques and posted them off without realising that the bulk of our cash reserves weren’t in our cheque account. The invertible happened, of course, and like a rubber ball some of them bounced. I think Mark was pretty disgusted with me and Peter Butler has dined out on the story. ‘Fessing’ up here should stop that.

Another story that I love to tell is that one day, around Christ-mas time, I was in Warilla Grove. I saw a jovial fellow ap-proaching me ‘Ho, Ho-ing’ and ‘Merry Christmasing’. It was Santa, of course. “Here’s a lolly and have a Merry Christmas young fellow’ says Santa ringing his bell. I was a bit taken aback until I looked behind the beard and saw it was Mark in another of his incarnations- “Piss of with your lollies’, Santa

I said. Go and get some Coopers to give out”. He bought me a Christmas Coopers the next time I saw him.

Mark, who was a great family man, lived at Oak flats with his wife Kim and had two lovely daughters of whom he was in-ordinately fond. I’d often see him at the Green Poppy Coffee Shop in Shellharbour, where, after walking his dog, he would call in to buy Kim a take home cappuccino. Our sympathies and thoughts are with them and we will have a concert at the Festival to celebrate Mark’s life.

Mark’s funeral was held on Friday 17th at the Hansel and Cole Chapel in Northcliffe Drive. There was a large contin-gent of Illawarra Folkies there and there was standing room only for latecomers. The service was conducted by ABC announcer, Steve Parsons, a great friend of the folk club and Gary and Carl Doran, his brothers, did eulogies.

As the crowd moved out of the Chapel, Enda Kenny’s song, ‘The Smell of Rain’ which was one of Mark’s favourites was played.

That song will appear on our 30th Pearl Anniversary Festival Album with a due tribute to Mark.

The crowd, in almost its entirety, then adjourned to the Conno Pub where tales were told and Coopers and red wine flowed.

Vale Mark Doran, taken too soon and sadly missed- One of Nature’s Gentlemen.

The Settlers Songbook launched in CoomaThe Alpine Hotel in Cooma was bursting at the seams on Sunday, 19 October, packed with fans of Ulick O’Boyle and The Settlers.

The occasion, coinciding with the 65th anniversary of the start of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, was the launch of a book featuring the sheet music of the 24 songs that made up The Settlers’ original LP records on the construction days of the scheme.

This was more than a book launch. It was a celebration of O’Boyle’s music. The Alpine hammered to renditions of his songs by Canberra and district musos who used to play with him – Scrumpy Allard, Peter Hobson, Ian Phillips, Graham Chalker, Peter Logue, Satch Campbell, Chris McGinty, Peter West, and Geoff Begg.

And a feature of the event was a guest appearance by two of the original Settlers, Anne Rutherford and Paul Davey, both turned out in the distinctive black and white checked shirts that The Settlers wore in the 1960s and 1970s.

The book, Songs of the Snowy Mountains – The Settlers, was compiled and edited by Ulick’s eldest daughter, Shan-non. It was the culmination of a project that spanned 5 years.

Shannon had long wanted to have the songs of her father’s two original albums, recorded in 1966 and 1967, trans-formed into proper sheet music. Up to now, the only docu-mented version of the songs, penned by a man who worked on the Snowy for five years, was the words, often written on several pages of small notepaper, with the guitar chords scribbled above them.

Shannon thought they deserved something more permanent: they needed to be presented in professional musical fashion, given their importance to Australia’s national heritage.

And what more fitting place to hold the official launch than the Alpine Hotel? One of Ulick’s most popular songs, Cooma Cavaliers, tells the humorous story of a group migrant Snowy workers of differing nationalities hitting town for a weekend spree: We pull up in Sharp Street by the Alpine Hotel/If you’ve been to Cooma you’ll know this place well.

Ulick O’Boyle died in 2011, but there is no doubt his musical legacy lives on.

Songs of the Snowy Mountains is available for $34.95 plus postage and can be ordered on the web at songsofthesnowy.com.au
