Opening Night Film with Director Matt Ornstein in attendance!Musician Daryl Davis has an unusual hobby. He’s played all over the world, but it’s what he does in his free time that sets him apart. Daryl likes to meet and befriend members of the Ku Klux Klan – something few black men can say. In his travels, he collects robes and other artifacts from friends who have left the Klan, in hopes of eventually opening a “Museum of the Klan”. In ACCIDENTAL COURTESY, Daryl’s journey takes him across the United States, from old friends who have left the Klan, to friends still active in the organization.

524x36 | CUFF.DOCS

A documentary that explores the birth, death and resurrection of illustrated movie poster art. Through interviews with a number of key art personalities from the past four decades, 24×36 aims to answer the question – what happened to the illustrated movie poster? In the mid 2000s, filling the void left behind by Hollywood’s abandonment of illustrated movie posters, independent artists and galleries began selling limited edition, screenprinted posters. With the emergence of groups such as Mondo, Skuzzles and Grey Matter Art, the movement has quickly exploded into a booming industry with prints selling out online in seconds, inspiring Hollywood studios to take notice of illustration in movie posters once more.

6 CUFF.DOCS | KATE PLAYS CHRISTINE

7 PM FRIDAY NOV. 18

Filmmaker Robert Greene cleverly forgoes your standard talking-head-and-sound-bite approach to nonfiction storytelling, instead choosing to employ actress Kate Lyn Sheil as a conduit to understanding an impossibly complex issue. Cast as Christine Chubbuck – a local Florida newscaster who committed suicide by shooting herself in the head on live television in 1974 – Kate travels to Christine’s hometown and candidly pulls back the curtain on her acting process to get into the role of Christine. Committed to doing justice to Christine’s life, Kate reveals the biases and presumptions even supposed experts can provide in their diagnosis. KATE PLAYS CHRISTINE boldly challenges its subjects and audience alike to accept that answers from the past are never easy.

8 CUFF.DOCS | CAMERAPERSON

A boxing match in Brooklyn; life in postwar Bosnia and Herzegovina; the daily routine of a Nigerian midwife; an intimate family moment at home: these scenes and others are woven into CAMERAPERSON, a tapestry of footage captured over the 25-year career of documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson (CITIZENFOUR, FAHRENHEIT 9/11). Through a series of episodic juxtapositions, Johnson explores the relationships between image makers and their subjects, the tension between the objectivity and intervention of the camera, and the complex interaction of unfiltered reality and crafted narrative. A work that combines documentary, autobiography, and ethical inquiry, CAMERAPERSON is both a moving glimpse into one filmmaker’s personal journey and a thoughtful examination of what it means to train a camera on the world.

9ALIVE AND KICKING | CUFF.DOCS

ALIVE AND KICKING explores the culture surrounding swing dance from the emergence of the lindy hop to the modern-day international phenomenon. More than a historical narrative, ALIVE AND KICKING is an inside look into the world of swing dancing and the characters who make it special. The documentary explores the lives of the dancers to find their personal stories, how they became hooked on the art form, but most of all – why it fills them with joy. Follow the growth of Swing dance from its purely American roots as an art form, to countries all over the world – where Swing is now experiencing a modern-day revival.

10 CUFF.DOCS | THE HAPPY FILM

Austrian graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister is doing well. He lives in New York, and he has success in his work, designing album covers for the Rolling Stones, Jay-Z and the Talking Heads. In the back of his mind he suspects there must be something more and so he decides to turn himself into a design project. Is it possible to train his mind to get happier? He pursues three controlled experiments of meditation, therapy, and drugs, grading himself along the way. But real life creeps in and confounds the process: art, sex, love, and death prove impossible to disentangle. His unique designs and painfully personal experiences mark a journey that travels closer to himself than ever intended.

11THE HOLLYWOOD SHORTIES | CUFF.DOCS

Director Ryan Steven Green in attendance!Beginning in the 1950’s and rising to prominence in the 1980’s, the Hollywood Shorties were a basketball team, the first of their kind – an organized sport team in the American dwarf community. Formed from an insular community of recognizable-but-typecast actors, the team began as a rare outlet for little people to gather publicly. As the team’s athletic skill increased, so did its popularity. By the early 1980’s, the Shorties had created a niche in entertainment akin to the Harlem Globetrotters, playing exhibitions from Hawthorne High to the Fabulous Forum with their signature blend of comedy and basketball prowess. Simultaneously, the Hollywood Shorties found themselves the vanguard of a revolutionary movement to bring little people into the public eye as something other than objects of curiosity.

12 CUFF.DOCS | GAZA SURF CLUB

Trapped in “the world’s largest open-air prison” and ruled by war, a new generation is drawn to the beaches. Sick of occupation and political gridlock, they find their own personal freedom in the waves of the Mediterranean – they are the surfers of Gaza. Gaza, a strip of land with a population of 1.7 million citizens, is wedged between Israel and Egypt and isolated from the outside world. Yet, against this background there is a small movement. About 40 surfboards have been brought into the country despite strict sanctions. It is those boards that give surfers an opportunity to experience a small slice of freedom – between the coastal reminder of a depressing reality and the Israeli-controlled three-mile marine border.

13OFF THE RAILS | CUFF.DOCS

OFF THE RAILS tells the remarkable true story of Darius McCollum, a man with Asperger’s syndrome whose overwhelming love of transit landed him in jail 32 times for impersonating New York City bus drivers and subway conductors and driving their routes. Darius was taught the ins and outs of the subway system from childhood by transit workers, and over the next three decades, he commandeered hundreds of trains and buses, staying en route and on schedule; actions that landed him 23 years in maximum security prison. Adam Irving’s debut is a fascinating, frustrating and heartbreaking documentary, a profile of a man seemingly born for one thing – and of a legal system that does not know how to deal with him.

14 CUFF.DOCS | YARN

5 PM SUNDAY NOV. 20

Meet the artists who are redefining the tradition of knit and crochet, bringing yarn out of the house and into the world. Reinventing our relationship with this colorful tradition, YARN weaves together wool graffiti artists, circus performers, and structural designers into a visually-striking look at the women who are making a creative stance while building one of modern art’s hottest trends. Starting at the beginning – with the sheep and the grass – this colourful documentary travels across the globe to uncover the history of the craft, and women’s complex relationship to it. A feminist art doc at its core, YARN explores the surge in popularity of knitting as a means of self-expression and a legitimate art form.

PRECEDED BY THE SHORT FILM

IN THE NAME OF COMEDY 19 min, 2016, United States, Director Jon Hart A frustrated comedian makes a viral video, but it winds up being his worst nightmare.

THE LAST LAUGH asks the ultimate taboo question: Can the Holocaust be funny? Shot on Super 16mm, THE LAST LAUGH thoughtfully weaves together an intimate cinema verité portrait of Auschwitz survivor Renee Firestone alongside archival footage, clips from comics, and interviews with influential comedians and thinkers. From Mel Brooks, Sarah Silverman and Gilbert Gottfried to authors Etgar Keret and Shalom Auslander, THE LAST LAUGH offers fresh insights into the Holocaust in a way we haven’t seen before. In exploring the line between funny and offensive, the documentary questions what happens if we make the Holocaust off limits, as well as the implications for other controversial subjects – 9/11, AIDS, racism – in a society that prizes freedom of speech.
