THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSORS

W elcome Dear Members of the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish Community:

We are exceedingly proud to present another premiere line-up of truly outstanding and diverse films that will excite, enlighten, and provoke you, our audience.

Six are features and three are documentaries. Although none of them addresses the Holocaust directly, that epic tragedy figures prominently in the background of four of our films, even though all are set in the present: “Besa–The Promise,” “To Life,” “Magic Men” and “Once in a Lifetime.” Three of the films deal with life in contemporary Israel—with both its blessings and its challenges: “Beneath the Helmet,” “Apples From the Desert,” and “A Borrowed Identity.” One film, “24 Days” is a docudrama about the real-life kidnapping in 2006 of a young French Jew. The ninth film, “On the Map,” our Closing Night film, is a first-ever documentary about the astounding 1977 victory of the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team over the heavily-favored Soviet Army team—the team that beat the U.S. in the Olympics.

These nine films provide a fascinating, multi-dimensional window into Jewish history, Jewish values, and Jewish courage. Together, they expose us to a variety of historical, personal, and emotional experiences—both real and fictional—that can inform our thinking, expand our perspectives, and strengthen our connection to the larger world of the Jewish People.

The Jewish Film Festival is one of many programs sponsored by The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee in pursuit of its mission:

To strengthen Jewish life and identity in our community, provide for Jewish people in need, and promote support for Israel.

OPENING NIGHT SUNDAY, MARCH 6TH, 5:45pm HYATT REGENCY SARASOTA

Last year, we had the distinct privilege of honoring the late Theodore Bikel (z’l) on Opening Night, and hearing him perform. If you weren’t there, you missed something extraordinary— an evening that the 700 people in the audience will never forget.

This year, the Opening Night Celebration of our 7th Annual Jewish Film Festival will be dedicated to the courageous men and women of the Israel Defense Forces, in connection with the screening of an inspiring new documentary, “Beneath the Helmet.” (See next page.) Our special guests, Director Oren Rosenfeld, IDF 1st Lt. Mekonen Abebe and IDF Res. Sgt. Coral Amarani, will introduce the film, and answer questions from the audience afterward.

To lead off this extraordinary evening, TV personality and leading Israeli musician Idan Haviv will entertain the audience with contemporary Israeli songs. An elegant Dessert Reception will complete the evening.

SPECIAL GUESTS AND EVENTSCLOSING NIGHT SUNDAY, MARCH 13TH, 6:30pm BEA FRIEDMAN THEATER

Israeli Director and Screenwriter Dani Menkin will introduce the first-ever “Work in Progress” screening of his new documentary: “On the Map,” about the astounding 1977 Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team that toppled the four-time defending European champion, the Russian Army team. (See page 13 for more information about the film.)

After the screening, Dani and players from that extraordinary team will an-swer audience questions and greet guests at a post-screening Dessert Reception. JFF filmgoers will re-member Dani from his tender and humorous feature film, “Is That You?”, which delighted audiences at our 2015 Festival.

If you want to go to EVERYTHING, please consider becoming a Sponsor of the Jewish Film Festival! You’ll re-ceive two Sponsor Passes to all the Special Events described above—plus a private Opening Night Cocktail Party at 4:30pm with our Israeli guests—and two reserved seats for one screening of each film. In addition, you can make your ticket and event reservations in advance, using a Sponsor Concierge. (See page 15 for Sponsor information.)

FILM DISCUSSIONS

A post-film discussion will take place after a few selected screenings. Please see the in-dividual film pages to see if a discussion is scheduled; we welcome your participation.

Thanks to Bunny and Mort Skirboll for sponsoring Mr. Haviv.

BENEATH THE HELMETAn inspiring documentary which follows the journey of five Israeli high-school graduates who are drafted into the IDF. These young men and women are defending not only their homes and their families, but also the values of peace, equality, opportunity, democracy, religious tolerance, and women’s rights. At the age of 18, away from their homes, families, and friends, these young men and women undergo a demanding, inspiring journey, revealing the core of who they are and who they want to be. The lessons they learn along the way will profoundly influence their lives—and the life of the nation they defend.

MAGIC MENA touching feature about a jaded Holocaust survivor who returns to his native Greece to find the man who protected him and taught him magic during WWII. Because of his age, he is compelled to bring his Hassidic rapper son as his guardian, and there begins a cross-cultural, cross-generational road trip with unexpected results. Arriving in Greece against the backdrop of its recent financial crisis, father and son are forced to confront their prickly relationship, and their journey becomes a search for absolution and reconciliation.

Punctuated by enchanting moments of humor and affection, Magic Men is further animated by spectacular panoramas of the Adriatic coast and a vibrant, Greek-infused musical score.

APPLES FROM THE DESERTA timeless and moving story of tradition versus modernity. The rebellious teenage daughter of ultra-Orthodox Jewish parents journeys into the secular world in an adaptation of the award-wining Israeli play that poignantly explores themes of love and reconciliation. Rebecca is an only child, living in a cloistered existence with her strictly religious Sephardic parents in Jerusalem. Unhappy with the restricted traditions of home and community, she secretly attends dance classes where she forms a relationship with a secular kibbutznik, forcing her father to take drastic steps to prevent her from violating the code of conduct in which he believes so fervently. Ultimately, this family conflict culminates in a moment of truth, forcing all parties to confront their beliefs and their feelings for one another.

Nominated for Three Israeli Academy Awards Winner: The Grand Prix of the 2015 Atlanta Jewish Film Festival Special Jury Award at the 2015 San Diego JFF Global Vision Award at Cinequest FF 2015 BEVIE Award for Best Feature Film at the Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema

24 DAYS A troubling view into the 2006 kidnapping of a young French Jew. Based on a shocking true story, this film is described as “one of the most wrenching and politically astute” films to come out of France. This cinematic adaptation of Ruth Halimi’s book offers a searing insight into the violent world of the gang of Barbarians, and the anguished experience of a family waiting and hoping that the police will save their son.

Although this film is difficult to watch at moments, it is an acclaimed, award-winning film that tells a timely and cautionary story—a story that forcefully reminds us of the critical challenge we face as a Jewish community—both at home and around the world.

TO LIFE!A touching human drama about the relationship between an aging Jewish cabaret singer and Holocaust survivor, and a young non-Jewish man on the run. Adapted from the original story, “If Stones Could Cry,” this film focuses on the unexpected connection that develops between Ruth and Jonas when he fortuitously saves her life. From that rather unusual beginning, a deep bond is formed between these very unlikely companions. As Jonas discovers Ruth’s past, and becomes a part of her present, his companionship and the passionate Yiddish songs of her youth help her find the way back to life. Featuring Hannelore Elsner, the grande dame of German cinema, Director Uwe Janson weaves a tale that effortlessly shifts between WWII, the post-war period, and today.

BESA – THE PROMISEA powerful documentary about Albanian Muslims who rescued Jews during the Holocaust, and one man’s search for the descendants of the Jews he saved, in order to fulfill a promise. This human drama bridges generations and religions, uniting fathers and sons, Muslims and Jews. A renowned Jewish-American photographer, Norman Gershman, is determined to document first-person accounts of the Albanian Muslims who rescued Jews during the Holocaust—one of the last untold stories of WWII—and finds Rexhep Hoxha, a Muslim Albanian who is searching for the Jewish family rescued by his father. Through the stories of Rexhep and his fellow Muslims, we discover a nation of everyday heroes. Through the accounts of Jewish survivors, we hear stories of gratitude to Muslim rescuers—stories that have not been heard for almost 70 years.

ONCE IN A LIFETIMEAn uplifting, fact-based story of a dedicated history teacher at a Paris high school who decides to challenge her apathetic, ethnically-diverse students with a unique assignment: A national competition on the theme of the child victims of the Nazi concentration camps. Although the project is initially met with extreme resistance, a face-to-face encounter with a Holocaust survivor changes students’ attitudes dramatically. As they move forward with their project, these once-rebellious teenagers begin to see one another—and themselves—in a new light. A potent antidote to the devaluation of education in an age of ignorance, bigotry, and rising anti-Semitism, this moving feature film demonstrates the enduring impact of the Holocaust in transforming future generations.

A BORROWED IDENTITYA compelling, moving feature about a young man going through a set of personal transitions against a background of ongoing cultural flux in Israel. Set in the 1980s and 1990s, this film explores the complex interrelated identities of Jewish Israelis and Arab Israelis. A gifted Arab Israeli boy is given the chance to go to a prestigious Jewish boarding school in Jerusalem. As Eyad desperately tries to fit in with his Jewish schoolmates and with Israeli society, he develops a friendship with another outsider, Jonathan, a Jewish boy suffering from muscular dystrophy, and gradually becomes part of his family. Ultimately Eyad must decide who and what he is—a decision that will change his life forever.

The film was directed by Jewish-Israeli filmmaker, Eran Riklis, and was scripted by acclaimed Arab-Israeli writer, Seyad Kashua.

ON THE MAPA fast-moving and awe-inspiring documentary about the astounding Maccabi Tel Aviv pro-basketball team that toppled the four-time defending European Champion, the Russian Army Team—and put Israel firmly on the map! In 1977, Maccabi Tel Aviv assembled a talented roster of American and Israeli athletes, but no one thought they would get very far, not even in Israel. The game was played in Belgium, because the Soviet team refused to play in Tel Aviv and would not allow the Israeli athletes into Russia. Featuring interviews with the American athletes who made history, this film combines the pulse-pounding action of a high-stakes game with an incendiary political situation at the height of the Cold War. The film honors Israeli heroes, fascinates basketball fans, and captures the spirit of a nation triumphant against all odds.
