Time Zones
The World in Spatial Terms7.3.1 Formulate a broad understanding of the location of countries of Africa, Asia and the Southwest Pacific7.3.2 Formulate a broad understanding of the location of capital cities in Africa, Asia and the Southwest Pacific using latitude and longitude on maps and with locational technology such as Global Positioning Systems and Geographic Information Systems.
How to Calculate Distance and Time in Time Zones
There are 24 standard time zones in the world
For each 1 hour of time, you travel 15 degrees of longitude:
There are 360 degrees in a circle-divided by 15 degrees for each hour traveled= 24 standard time zones
East to West / West to EastWhen traveling from the east to west you
subtract 1 hour for each time zone
When traveling from west to east you add 1 hour for each time zone
Time zones are counted from the Prime Meridian which runs through
Greenwich, England

The International Dateline
The International Dateline is the place where the days change. It follows closely to the 180 degree meridian.
Sorry---- this isn’t a place to get dates from people in foreign countries!!!
The Earth Spinning on its Axis
• The earth is spinning at about 1038 miles per hour at the equator, and about 0 at the poles. It would be somewhere around 700 mph in Indianapolis!
