The University of Edinburgh has a long tradition ofwelcoming international students and helping themachieve their full potential, both academically andpersonally as individuals.

Regardless of country of origin, we select only thebrightest and best students who we think will gainthe most benefit from all the University has to offer –and the College of Science and Engineering is noexception. We set high standards for admission toour degree programmes, but have come to realisethat this could result in the exclusion of highly talentedstudents from certain countries whose school leaving qualifications are not yet formally recognisedby the University as a basis for direct entry.

This is why we have introduced GLOBALSELECTas a way of offering these exceptional students the opportunity to join our undergraduate degreeprogrammes without the need to gain further qualifications on a pre-university foundation course first.

GLOBALSELECT students will therefore enjoy thesame status and advantages of their fellow directentry classmates with full integration into all aspectsof the core study programme from day one. Theonly difference is that GLOBALSELECT studentswill also receive targeted support during their firstyear. This will help them to reach required standards in English and to fill any knowledge gapsidentified by the skills assessment exercise, whichwill be taken prior to being accepted for entry.

In the following pages, we’ll tell you more abouthow the GLOBALSELECT programme works and what makes it unique as a pathway to aScience and Engineering degree that will berecognised as a mark of excellence and achievement all over the world.

What is GLOBALSELECT?

09

If you are asked to undertake our two-part assessment exercise, it shows that we wereimpressed by your application and are seriouslyconsidering offering you a place on a degree programme at the College of Science andEngineering as a GLOBALSELECT student.

The purpose of this assessment exercise is to helpus gain a better understanding of your capabilitiesin your preferred study area, and your level of competency in English. This will give us the information we require to design an individually tailored programme of supplementary courses foryou during your first year. It will also enable us toensure that you have access to support needed toaddress any shortfalls and get you up to speed with your fellow students. That way you'll be fullyprepared for entry into second year.

This level of personal support is what makesGLOBALSELECT the ideal choice for outstandinginternational applicants, who wish to complete afour year degree programme at the University ofEdinburgh. You should therefore think of pre-entryassessment in terms of the personal benefits it willultimately offer you rather than as a test for you topass or fail. However we will be be expecting theresults of your assessment to confirm the potentialwe saw in you from the information you providedabout yourself in your application.

There are two parts to the assessment process. The first stage is a short online exercise that youcan complete at home or from anywhere elsewhere you have access to the internet, answeringquestions which have been carefully chosen fortheir relevance to your particular area of study.

If we then make you an offer of entry and youaccept it, you will need to undertake a secondassessment of similar length on arrival in Edinburgh. This will not only validate the results of your firstassessment, but highlight any weaknesses in specific aspects of your chosen study area that you may need extra help with during your first year.

Please visit our website www.ed.ac.uk/globalselect and follow the Pre-entry assessment link for instructions on completing your online assessment together withsamples of assessment content for each core discipline.

Pre-entry assessment step-by-step

10

Shortly after you arrive at the University to take upyour place on a degree programme at the Collegeof Science and Engineering, a meeting will bearranged with your Personal Tutor – a member ofour teaching staff who will monitor your first yearprogress and always be there for you to discussany problems that might be affecting your studies.

As a GLOBALSELECT student, your initial meetingwith your Personal Tutor will focus on designing apersonal study plan which will include a schedule ofsupplementary courses to address any knowledgegaps in your core study area identified by your pre-entry assessment. The majority ofGLOBALSELECT students joining the College willbe required to attend English for AcademicPurposes courses. These are specially designed tohelp students attain the speaking, reading and writing standards they'll need to gain full benefitfrom their Science and Engineering studies, and will count towards the number of credits required to successfully move into second year.

Your Personal Tutor will help you decide what combination of course options in each semestermight be the most suitable and beneficial choice for you.

Apart from the supplementary courses designedspecifically for GLOBALSELECT students, you will attend the same lectures and undertake thesame practical assignments in your core subject as every other first year student on your particulardegree programme. In other words, regardless ofyour entry route, you’ll be treated in exactly thesame way and enjoy all the same privileges andbenefits right from day one!

What can you expect in your first year?

11

You will need to accumulate 120 credit points froma combination of your core subjects and other complementary courses to successfully completeyour first year studies and move on to year two.

With help and advice from your Personal Tutor, thisis the point where you will need to decide on whichspecialist subjects within your core discipline youwish to study over the three remaining years of yourdegree programme. There is the option in many ofthe subjects to extend your study for a further yearto attain an integrated masters degree.

The following pages of this Guide provide a brieflisting of the wide variety of specialist degree subjects you could study in your chosen field. Formore detailed information, go to www.ed.ac.uk toorder or download our latest undergraduateProspectus.

As an international student, you can apply foraccommodation at our main Pollock Halls complexor other equally convenient university student housing sites to help you feel right at home duringyour all-important first year. However, your accommodation can only be guaranteed if youapply for the type of accommodation you wouldprefer by our deadline of August 16 in the year ofyour proposed entry to the university.

Assuming you are coming to the university as a single student, we can offer two types of guaranteed accommodation – fully-catered or self-catering in a shared house or flat with other first year students.

Fully-catered

This will usually be in our Pollock Halls complex.Your weekly rent will include breakfast and dinnerMonday to Friday with brunch and dinner at weekends, internet connections in each study bedroom and telephones in most, a regular cleaning service, contents insurance, secure bikestorage and all heating, hot water and electricitycosts.

Self-catering

You may choose this as the cheaper rental option, but you should remember that you will have to buyall your own food which can add considerably toyour weekly budget.

For more information about the types of accommodation available, rental charges and thedeposits you will need to pay before you arrive, simply go to the main university website homepagewww.ed.ac.uk and search for AccommodationServices.

Where will you live?

26

Fully-catered room in Halls (single/shared) Self-catering room

Rent £114-£231 £55-£135

Food £15 for lunches £50-£80

Mobile phone £7-£10 £7-£10

Laundry/Toiletries £8-£10 £8-£10

Total £144-£266 per week £120-£235 per week

The cost of living in Edinburgh is generally lowerthan many other major UK cities such as London, but it may seem a lot higher than in your own country. As you must be able to demonstrate thatyou have sufficient funds to cover living expensesas well as tuition fees to be granted a UK visa, thefigures below will hopefully give you a better idea ofhow much it could cost you in weekly outgoingsduring your first year as a University of Edinburghstudent.

The table below should only be taken as a guide to your minimum weekly living expenses in either fully-catered or self-catering university accommodation.

On top of this you will need to consider fixedexpenses, including the £250 deposit on youraccommodation which all students have to paybefore they arrive. You will also have to pay inadvance for bedding, currently set at £20 if youchoose fully-catered accommodation or £25 forself-catering including extra bed linen. If you wanta television in your room, you are required by law toobtain an annual TV licence which currently costs£145.50. There is also the estimated minimum costof £315 a year for textbooks, photocopying andstationery, and the current £34 fee to register withthe local police on arrival if required.

You will also need to think about other routine costssuch as clothing, travel, going to the cinema or justgenerally socialising with your fellow students …after all, it all adds up! Many of these costs you cancontrol yourself but, as a general guide, the UKBorder Agency Tier 4 visa requirements state thatyou need to demonstrate you have sufficient fundsto cover £800 of living expenses a month for 9months of your course – that’s £7200 for the academic year.

For more detailed guidance on everyday living costsincluding a number of useful downloads and external links, go to www.ed.ac.uk/studying/international/finance/cost-of-living.

What about everyday livingexpenses?
