High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are filters with ability to trap dust mites, mold spores, pollen,

animal dander, tobacco smoke in the air as well as bacteria, fungi and viruses that lead to lethargy,

headaches, watery eyes and irritation among other respiratory problems. HEPA filters are efficient in

removing 99.97% of airborne contaminants, down to 0.3 microns in size.

HEPA filters are classified in terms of H10-17 as per European air filters test standards. HEPA filters cater to

industries that require ultraclean air, such as, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare, medical devices

and semiconductor industries. In addition, HEPA filters is an appropriate technology for gas turbine air

intake systems, which require high efficiency and large number of air filters.

HEPA filters are also used for HVAC systems installed across residential as well as commercial sector in

order to stop airborne allergens from spreading in the air. Moreover, HEPA filters are used in cabin filters of

cars, aircraft and other commercial vehicles in order to improve the ambient air quality of the vehicle.

Direct Impaction: Large and high density particles collide and stick to the media as a result of inertial force.

Sieving: Sieving is also known as straining, which occurs when particles are larger in size than the clearance

within fiber media. However, it is effective only for long fiber materials such as lint or hair.

Interception: Interception occurs when particle flows through the air stream and forces of attraction

between fiber and the particle are stronger than the air stream velocity. Consequently, the particle is held by

fiber media due to van der Waals forces.

Diffusion: Diffusion occurs on ultrafine particles, which due to their low mass in comparison with air

molecules, move randomly within the air stream. Molecular collision of erratically moving particles, causes

them to strike at random positions and stick by van der Waals forces.
