TDPF 1.0 1047 Class Battle cruiser

Profile Drawing of Project 1047 by: Alexander van Maanen

The resource-rich Netherlands East Indies (NEI) was seen as a tempting target for the Japanese, whose expansionist tendencies were becoming increasingly evident by the late 1930s. Project 1047 was the name for a never-built series of Dutch Battlecruisers designed to counter lighter Japanese ships deployed against the NEI. Unfortunately, much of their design was outdated by the start of World War II. The 1047 would have displaced 28,000 tons, a significant improvement over a typical heavy cruiser. While the propulsion system was never finalized, some proposals would have allowed the vessel a speed of up to 34kts. Proposed armaments included nine 11.1inch guns, twelve 120mm guns, plus another 22 anti-aircraft guns.

Appendix B: Axis and Allies Global 40 Scenario By Dakota Carvara In this scenario, a Japanese, Dutch and British player will vie for control of the Netherlands East Indies.

Situation Upon the fall of the Netherlands in 1940, the Netherlands East Indies, (NEI) were on their own. Weak and disorganized, the splintered Dutch navy now faced the looming Japanese threat. The British Far East Command is stinging from the loss of its naval force and much of its resources are being drained back to Europe to defeat the Nazis. The Japanese have managed to muster a small invasion force in the Philippines. The Japanese seek to eliminate Dutch resistance and occupy the oil-rich East Indies. However, the Dutch have a secret weapon the Japanese didn’t plan for. They have covertly deployed their newest Battle Cruisers, Evertsen, and Kortenaer to protect their colonies.

Objectives: Allied Victory: The 1047 Battle Cruiser must remain in play throughout the game. The Dutch East Indies must remain in either Dutch or British hands. The Japanese invasion force must be eliminated through either, the destruction of all the Japanese transports, or the carrier and battleship, or by eliminating all the ground units from the Philippines. Japanese Victory: The Japanese will win if they can capture and hold Java, Sumatra and the Celebes for one complete round of play and eliminate both 1047s.

Order of Play: The game can be played with two to three players. If there are two players assign the British and Dutch to one player and the Japanese to the other. Players will take their turns in the following order:

Japan

Netherlands East Indies

Britain

Military Mobilization: Though there are no facilities to purchase or deploy units from, each nation has the ability to construct and deploy onto the board up to three batches of reinforcements. These reinforcements may be anything that can be purchased with the nation’s allotted spending limit.

GREAT BRITAIN can construct and deploy up to three

reinforcement groups in India or Sea Zone 39 worth up to 12 IPCs each. No more than one may be deployed per turn.

JAPAN may construct three reinforcement groups worth 10 IPCs

each into the Philippines, Kwangtung, Sea Zones 35 and Sea Zone 20. No more than one may be deployed per turn.

THE NETHERLANDS cannot construct more units due to the

limited resources at their disposal, however they may select one of the reinforcement groups per turn and place them into Sea Zone 39 or India. Each group may only be selected once. After all groups have been selected they receive no more reinforcements. No more than one group may be selected per turn.

Optional Victory Conditions An Optional rule is to play an extended game following a more in-depth system with Victory Points to determine the victor of this scenario. In this case follow the table.

Country Victory Point # Needed to win Japan +2 per Objective 12

Great Britain +1 per Objective 8

NEI +1 per Objective 12

NOTE: Points shown in parenthesis is the maximum total that can be earned off that objective. Japan VP Objectives:

Capture Java, Sumatra and the Celebes (6 VPs)

Capture Malaya (1 VP)

Capture Borneo (1 VP)

Page 8: Global Command Series - Historical Board Gaming Expansion Sets...“Global Command Series ... their newest Battle Cruisers, Evertsen, and Kortenaer to protect their ... Malaya 1 Infantry,

8

Capture Dutch New Guinea (1VP)

Eliminate the 2 1047s (4 VPs) GREAT BRITAIN VP Objectives:

Maintain control of all original territories (6 VPs)*

Capture Siam (1 VP)

Liberate French-Indo China (1 VP)

Liberate Hong Kong (1 VP)

Prevent the Battleship’s Loss (1 VP per turn) *NOTE: There are six territories that make up the original Great

Britain; India, Shan State, Burma, Malaya, Borneo, and Ceylon. At

the end of the First complete round of play, examine the map and for

every one of the original territories still in UK FEC’s control, add one

VP. If a territory is later conquered by Japan, that VP you added is

now subtracted from the total VP count. This lost point may be added

back, but only if that territory is liberated by UK FEC forces.

NEI VP Objectives:

Prevent the loss of the 1047s (1 VP each per every battle they participate in)

Maintain control of all original NEI territories (4 VPs)*

Eliminate the Japanese Battleship (1 VP)

Eliminate the Carrier (1 VP)

Maintain Dutch Proctorate in Borneo and Malaya (1 VP each per turn)*

Sink the Japanese Transports (5 VPs)

Netherland East Indies: There are four territories that make up the

Dutch East Indies; Sumatra, Java, the Celebes, and Dutch New

Guinea. For every territory still in Dutch control at the end of the first

complete round of play, add those points to the Dutch VP count, one

point per territory.

If a territory is conquered by Japan, subtract that territory’s VP from

the Dutch total VP count. The Victory Point may be returned to the

Dutch Player upon that territory being liberated by either Dutch or

British forces.

Protective Proctorate: Maintaining Dutch protectorate in Borneo and

Malaya refers to the agreements between the Dutch and British that,

in exchange for the defense of Borneo, and Malaya, they may have

air units stationed on Malaysian airfields and share a portion of the

territory’s rich economic materials. To maintain proctorate, or, a

protective garrison, simply have at least one infantry or any ground

unit present in those territories and every turn gain one VP per

territory that this requirement is met in.
