CCFTC Flight Instructors are required to know and understand the following

HPMA/HPACA (Human Performance in Military Aviation/Human Performance in Air

Cadet Aviation) Elements and be proficient in their use during flight training.

CCFTC Flight Instructors will use the following provisional Glider Pilot Training

Progress Card. This card is different from the one previously used (ACGP Gliding

Manual 2-6-13). Comments should be based on the HPMA/HPACA Guidelines above.

The following three cards simulate the course progress of a student nearing the

completion of Block 3. As a returning instructor you must be able to identify trends in

your student’s flying and create a suitable flight training plan for their upcoming flight.

The Block 3 Enabling Check (EC) is a chance for you to rectify these errors and improve

their overall flying ability.

Review the cards and create an Air Lesson Brief using the AMOL format for the Block 3

EC on a separate sheet of paper. You will be evaluated on this Air Lesson Brief during

the Refresher Course.

G Training

1. G sensation training will be conducted on the Glider Pilot Scholarship Course as a

means of simulating G forces that should be experienced in a spin/spiral recovery.

Ensuring the glider is G loaded will confirm that pilots are prioritizing terrain avoidance

during spin/spiral recovery procedures.

2. G training maneuvers are as follows:

a. Steep Turn. Set attitude to 65mph and enter a 60º angle of bank turn. When

established, pull assertively on the control column until it is full aft. Note the

increased G loading with a slight climb and decrease in airspeed.

b. 30º nose up stall. Enter from 50mph attitude then set a 30º pitch attitude above

the horizon. Maintain attitude until control column is full aft and glider stalls.

Allow nose to drop well below the horizon, imitating the initial attitude of a full

spin prior to recovery. Pull assertively on the control column to bring the nose to a

10º nose up attitude above the horizon. Note the increased G sensation. Lower the

nose to set 50mph as speed is slowing through 55mph.

c. Spin recovery. Enter from either a straight ahead or skidding turn. Ensure spin

has stabilized prior to recovery. Initiate the recovery procedure once spin is

established. Once the glider is unstalled (shortly after controls are relaxed) look

up, find the closest horizon, roll wings level to the closest horizon and

aggressively apply back pressure to set a 10º nose up attitude on the horizon.

Lower the nose to set 50mph as the speed is slowing through 55mph.

3. An extra 500ft will be added to a flight in Block 2 to conduct the first two G training

manoeuvers (recommended on the stall introduction flight). These manoeuvers will be

demonstrated by the IP and then practiced by the student. No PLs will be assigned as it is

the expected that instructors will heavily coach the students through these manoeuvers.

The objective is to provide a training environment so the student can experience the G

loading required for a safe and effective low nose unusual attitude recovery. The first

two flights of the G training are to be completed before beginning block 3.

4. AL 12 – 14 spin recoveries will be flown as normal using the recovery outlined listed

above.

G training will be conducted to emphasise

that recoveries are emergency procedures and

terrain avoidance is the primary objective.

HPMA/HPACA Exercises

(To be completed before arrival)

1) You are taking off Alpha 12 with the winds 150@10kts. You release at your

planned altitude of 2600’ASL while another glider releases at 3100’ASL above

you. As you come through 2100’ ASL, both gliders are called by tower and are

asked to expedite to the circuit due to CF-18 traffic taking off 12.

Identify any possible threats, your mitigating strategies, and your decision making

process. (air picture, SOPs, PDM, task prioritization)

2) You and your student are being pushed out onto Alpha 30 for AL 15 (EC for

Block 3), the current winds are calm. Your student has given the take up slack

signal and tower has cleared you for take-off with the right circling departure; you

hear a float plane call Tree Island with intentions to take the shoreline route while

transiting northbound to Campbell River.

Describe your decision making process on deciding to launch or not.

3) Glider 4 has just called downwind with the intention to land grass 30, and

received the winds 020@4kts. As Glider 4 approaches its base turn the CC130

Hercules 2 miles out, is cleared for a touch and go by tower. The Hercules has

completed its touch and go as glider 4 turns final. Tower now realizes the

potential danger and tries to contact glider 4.

Identify what threats and hazards, your mitigating process (if you were PIC in the

glider), and your decision making process. (air picture, SOPs, PDM, task

prioritization)
