International Bazaar

I would personally like to thank the tremendous PTA Committee for leading, organizing and showing utmost commitment to the International Bazaar that was held last month. The team worked in a collaborative fashion, each taking responsibility for a section of the organization for evening. I was most impressed by their can-do attitude, their ability to be proactive and to try new things and their desire to work with the community to raise as much money as we could, to go towards the school library project. This team of dedicated workers spent their last few weeks before the bazaar almost entirely on school bazaar business, trouble shooting last minute regulations, looking at rain contingencies, sourcing products, liaising with vendors and our community chefs, marketing the event etc. They were extremely thorough and because of this the evening went without a hitch!

The Glenealy PTA Committee wishes to thank Principal Brenda Cook, the staff PTA representatives Dianne Best, David Benzie and Kristy Urquart, and the entire Glenealy staff for their support of the PTA International Bazaar.

Not only did the PTA team work tirelessly before the event, but during the event they were seen running from place to place to ensure everything was going to plan, they assisted in all of the packing up and counting of profits and the aftermath of a PTA office full of ‘stuff’ that was stored overnight! Going way beyond their role, many PTA members also underwrote some of the costs of certain aspects of the Bazaar and were seen as first starters in the silent auction.

We have had excellent feedback from you all about the Bazaar evening and I’m sure you will join me in thanking the team (listed below) for their outstanding effort and for encouraging the community as a whole to be involved and to contribute to this wonderful event. I’m sure you will enjoy looking through this pamphlet, which acknowledges the amazing contributions from so many of you. Thank you! We have had confirmation from ESF that our library project will definitely go ahead in August 2013, ready for our next academic year. We are so excited about this cutting edge project which I’m sure will see Glenealy with one of the most outstanding libraries in Hong Kong!

The International Bazaar is Glenealy PTA’s main annual fundraiser. This year’s bazaar had all the traditional elements: delicious international food, great bar, fun games and fabulous shopping. The new elements that the 2012 Bazaar saw were the silent auction, and a call to parents to lend a hand by underwriting costs. The response was overwhelming, and contributed significantly towards the fundraising record. The combined donations and cash underwritings were over $34,000.

What an Amazing night! What an amazing night the school bazaar was! Thank you to the PTA, who worked incredibly hard to make it all happen, and to all the parents who contributed their time in preparing the food, helping with stalls and the bar, setting up, cleaning up and generally supporting the fundraising efforts. It was a genuine community effort, all of us working together for the benefit of the children. We were completely blown away with the amount raised and we are grateful that the funds can be put to good use towards the school library redevelopment project.

The Glenealy Bar PTA Coordinator: Wendy Zhang

As an annual tradition, Glenealy parents practiced their bartending skills. The 2012 International Bazaar saw the most polished Glenealy Bar to date! In addition to excellent wines and cold beer, Prosecco, Pimm’s and Gin and Tonic were served. Glenealy Bar raised $33,400 towards the library.

Our most sincere thank-you to Neil Tomes for all his hard work and expertise in putting together the most amazing bar!

We would like to thank Swire Coca-Cola Hong Kong for generously donating all the soft drinks. We would also like to thank Hop Leaf for their donation of beer, and Alfie’s by Kee for the bar tables. The many Glenealy families underwriting the cost of wine and other related expenses are listed in the section “Donors and Underwriters”, page 3. Thank you!

Our wine partner for the bar was Telford, who supplied the wine at wholesale prices for both the bar and by case sales.

And, we would also like to thank our Glenealy bartenders for keeping the party going:

Ana Baillie, Tom Baillie, Sumita Barnes, David Beatty, Darren Bowdern, Tom Cheung, Mark Dowding, Ja Gerjusarak, Lisa Goeller, Matt Lyons, Miles van Rensburg, Glenn Schloss, Elliott Shadforth, David Shaw, Rob Subbaraman, David Sylvester, Peter Williams, Jason Wincuinas and Michael Yee.

The International Food PTA Coordinators: Anna Pietrafitta, Hema Shah, Marissa Han

The Bazaar would not be what it is without the delicious food. Every year Glenealy parents roll up their sleeves and put together a feast that reflects an array of international dishes. The International Bazaar guests can take a journey around Asia on a plate, enjoy an eclectic mix of international delicacies, chow down some pizza, and finish it with a phenomenal selection of desserts. This year’s newcomer, Candy Floss, was very popular among Glenealy kids! The International food raised $55,500 towards the new library.

The International Food is a showcase of the School Spirit of the Glenealy community. This year we want to take the opportunity and thank all the International Food donors and volunteers – over 140 of them!

So: thank you for cooking, baking, donating towards costs, and volunteering at the Bazaar:

The Games PTA Coordinator: Marie Milan

The Program PTA Coordinator: Fiona Tam

This year’s Bazaar introduced a number of new games that proved very popular among the Glenealy kids! The games and craft stalls contributed $20,800 towards the library. This year there were more turns or rounds of games played than last year, but the money raised was lower. This was anticipated and intentional as the game selection and pricing structure was overhauled. Kids were also invited to play “Name the puppy” for free, and every child was given a small token gift.

Our sincere thank-you goes to all of the teachers for their work with setting up and signposting the games and ensuring the children were excited and motivated to attend.

We wish to thank Chito Ryu Karate and Heyton Tze for providing the the Karate board chopping booth which was a huge success.

A good amount of background work goes into organizing a Bazaar!

We wish to thank our long-term collaborator AGS Four Winds for providing the tents. Given Hong Kong weather, there cannot be a Bazaar without a rain backup plan, and thanks to AGS Four Winds we were completely rain proof!

Our warmest thank-you goes to Ricky Yeung and the Glenealy site staff for their work with the set-up of the bazaar. Every year their work is instrumental in turning the school playgrund into a Bazaar within a matter or hours. We also wish to thank Jane Shanahan and everybody at the Glenealy school office for helping the communications run so smoothly.

We wish to thank Alex Donowho with his help with Glenealy Money, and Dipti Chauhan, Pamela Ferguson and Jarrod Deakin for their help with the Glenealy Bank

We would also like to thank Melissa Shadforth for her initiative to bring recycling to the Bazaar, with recycling partner, HK Recycles.

The International Bazaar flyer was printed by Scientific Blueprinting Services Ltd. The printing of the flyer and all other Bazaar-related material was kindly underwritten.

Our warm thanks go to Glenealy PTA Company Secretary Anne Bezzano for her hard work towards the bazaar, and keeping the other business going during the busy planning period!

Finally, we wish to thank Adeline Chin, Ja Gerjusarak, Benny Lo, Wendy Mahbubani, Jason Wincuinas and all the ad-hoc volunteers who helped with the set-up and clean up.
