Dear Family of Faith Members, I have been talking the last few weeks about our projected budget short-fall (somewhere between $60,000 and $80,000). Responses to my sermon on April 15 and conversations I have had with Elders, Deacons and other members have made me aware that for some in our congregation my communication about money has created unnecessary and unintended guilt. So these notes are for those of you who are already giving

generously, even sacrificially, but have expressed sorrow that you can’t give more. I cannot emphasize clearly enough that my stewardship messages have not been directed at you. Your faithfulness to Christ and his people here in our church family are an inspiration to me. Your desire to be generous stewards gives me strength each day to serve as one of your pastors. And I probably have only a partial understanding of your generosity, since those who give most freely often give most quietly. Thank you for your commitment! We will, as we have done in years past, figure out how to fulfill our ministries and missions, in large part because you are devoted to Christ’s work here. In his peace, Bill

Being a Christian is less about cautiously avoiding sin than about courageously and actively doing God’s will. —Dietrich Bonhoeffer

National Day of Prayer Breakfast

Join us on Thursday, May 3, at 8:30 AM for our annual National Day of Prayer Breakfast. We will gather at First Baptist Church for thiscommunity-wide event.

This year's speaker will be Eric Van Pelt, Regional Director of the Saints Prison Ministry. Tickets are $10 and are available in the church office.

A Huge Thank You! Thanks are extended to the church members who gave a generous anonymous gift to help pay for our new - and long overdue! - sound system for Fellowship Hall! Thanks are also given to the Westermaier family. Funds in memory of the Rev. Fred Westermaier were also used to provide this valuable resource for our church's ministries.

Philly Pops Concert May 12Do you enjoy the Philly Pops? We have been very fortunate to obtain a limited number of tickets to the “Broadway Showstoppers” matinee on Saturday, May 12th at 2:00 PM.

Beforehand we will have a private talk with one of the members at 1:00 PM and afterwards a personal talk with maestro Peter Nero. The cost for an afternoon of spectacular musical numbers from Broadway’s greatest hits is $60.

Please call Betsy in the church office to make your reservations. Transportation is on your own, but carpooling is certainly an option.

Orchestra Committee Sponsors Trio PerformancePictured below are cellist Bob Cafaro from the Philadelphia Orchestra, pianist Luba Agranovsky, and flutist Dmitri Kasyuk, who are The Rachmaninov Trio. They performed to a full house in our sanctuary on Monday, April 16. The photo shows the trio in a question-and-answer session after the concert, which was sponsored by the New Jersey Committee for the Philadelphia Orchestra.

What is Youth Sunday?

Youth Sunday is a Sunday like any other Sunday in the life of our church except the youth are leading worship! At all three services (8:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 11:00 a.m.) on May 20, Middle School and High School students will lead worship. We hope that you will join us to worship!

Also on May 20th…

Deacons’ News andOpportunities

Attention, all college-bound students (and parents). Are you looking for ways to help pay for college? The Deacons are here to help. The Board of Deacons is now accepting applications for annual loans and scholarships.

Over the years, the Deacons have provided interest-free loans to college-bound students who are church members or whose parents are members. Loans are available up to a maximum of $1,000. Over the past three years we have provided a total of nine loans to qualifying individuals.

In addition to loans, the Deacons also offer an annual scholarship in the amount of $500 - no repayment required. Last year's recipient was Meredith Hoobler. This year it could be you.

Applications are due in May. To find out more about this great program or to obtain an application, please reach out to Judy Blank, Kendra Sturner, David Stedman or any other Board of Deacons member.

The Deacons will fundraise throughout the year in order to grow the balance in the scholarship account. Watch for announcements in the bulletin and future Glad Tidings to find out about upcoming events.

Do you enjoy meeting new people? Would you like to get to know more church members and to welcome visitors? If so, we need people to serve as Sunday morning Greeters for boththe 9:30 and 11:00 services.

Couples and families particularly enjoy greeting together, so feel free to sign up with your spouse, your children, your friends, or by yourself.

Please contact Joan Fiorella at (856) 795-1363 or [email protected] for more information.

Christian Education News

Sunday School diligently saved their coins (with some help from donations that fold) for their Heifer Inter-national Lenten mission project. They have donated $610.99, which is enough to purchase a heifer, a swarm of honeybees, a flock of ducks and a quantity of tree seedlings to help families turn a life of hunger and poverty into one of self-reliance and independence. With the children’s gifts Heifer Int. helps families improve their nutrition and generate income in sustainable ways.

On Sunday, May 13, the children of the Sunday School will lead in the 9:30 worship. Each class will be responsible for one of the worship elements by reading, reciting and praying during the service. “The intent of worship is to experience and praise God. While the experience of God in worship leads to knowledge of God, the primary mode of learning is by participation. God is experienced as we enter into scripture and allow the Holy Spirit to convince us of the truth of God’s word.” (Sonja M. Stewart and Jerome W. Berryman, Young Children and Worship). By giving children an opportunity to lead in worship we are contributing to their experience of God.

The following Sunday, May 20, the younger children are invited to gather again in the sanctuary, as is their custom, for Youth Sunday. They will be dismissed to their classes after the Children’s Message. Other classes will meet as usual. However, since this is the last meeting of Sunday School classes in the 2011-2012 year, students will be dismissed early for a special treat outside near the playground.

This church is blessed with many faithful people who give of their time and many talents to the educational ministry of our faith family. We are grateful for their dedication and constant service. Family Faith Formation

What can children possibly teach adults about prayer? After all, they are just inexperienced kids. What could they know that adults don’t know? According to some insightful adults over the ages—much!

Jesus: “Unless you become like a little child, none of you will enter the kingdom of heaven.” (Luke 18:17)

Thomas Hood: “I’m farther off from Heaven than when I was a boy.”

Albert Einstein: “Pay close attention to the curiosity of a child; this is where the search for knowledge is freshest and most valuable.”

Pablo Picasso: “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to re-main an artist once one grows up”

There is something primal and pristine and pure, something relatively uncontaminated issuing from the hearts and minds of little ones, something near the deep-down mysteries and meanings of life.(excerpted from P.S. God, can you fly? by R. Wayne Willis)

In this little volume Willis shares the simple prayers of children in Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky. His premise is that children have a lot to say about hope and courage and caring in their simple prayers to a God they understand as close by and protective.

Talk with your children about what is on their minds that they might wish to tell or ask God. What is it that warms their hearts, piques their curiosity and puzzles their minds. Have them write their prayer on a piece of paper or draw pictures to illustrate their question or petition. Encourage them to decorate the prayer as they wish and hang it in their room to remind them that God is always there to listen to them. Not even if, but because they are a child.

Presbyterian Coffee Project

Equal Exchange has been in operation for nearly 25 years. Its purpose from the beginning has been to improve the lives of the small farmers who grow the coffee, tea and cocoa that is sold on the world market. After a difficult start, the organization established itself as a Fair Trade specialty company. In the summer of 2001, the Presbyterian Coffee Project was launched and shortly afterwards Presbyterian Women of our church joined in the venture.

Presbyterian Women will offer these items for sale after the services on May 6 and 20. Come to the parlor and join us in our endeavors. We are proud to be a part of this project that leads to better roads, better health and better lives for farmers throughout the world.

Moderators’ Luncheon MAY 8 at 12:30

An important tradition with Presbyterian Women has been the Moderators’ Luncheon in May. The luncheon provides the opportunity for all Circles to get together to celebrate their commitments and to invite friends to join them in fellowship and fun.

On Tuesday, May 8, at 12:30 in Fellowship Hall, you’ll be able to enjoy this year’s Luncheon. Following the meal, Liz Getman, Partner Program and Grant Coordinator with Urban Promise, will speak about the organization and the new Wellness Center. The mission of the Center is to promote healthy lifestyle choices, including psychological well-being, through counseling services. It provides opportunities for Urban Promise students and families to have access to pastoral care.

Childcare is available. The cost of the luncheon is $8. Make your reservations by calling Virginia Dowd at 856-428-3378 or the church office at 856-429-1960. Don’t miss this happy occasion.

Church World Service Blankets + Program

May 13, 2012

Looking for a perfect Mothers’ Day gift?

Consider contributing to the Church World Service Blankets+ program. Blankets+ is a special mission of more than 8,000 congregations and groups across our country providing funds to help people around the world, including the U.S.A. CWS, which was established in 1946, works in partnership with local governments to support sustainable self-help development, meet emergency needs, and aid refugees while addressing the root causes of poverty.

In the wake of a disaster, CWS supplies blankets, tents and food. Tools and seeds are provided for refugees coming home to replant their fields; wells for families living in drought-prone areas are dug; literacy training and microcredit are given to women struggling to realize their potential.

Church World Service was there in Japan to help after the devastating earthquake and tsunami. It has aided families in the midst of severe droughts in Nicaragua as well as in African nations. Here in our country, CWS has been responding to low-income families affected by floods and tornadoes.

Our gifts are urgently needed. They give hope to people in great distress by providing emergency relief and long-term assistance, helping to create a far brighter future for them. Please join us on Mothers’ Day by contributing to the Church World Service Blankets+ program.

Founded in 1988 as a faith- and community-based organization, UrbanPromise now serves more than 600 youth in the city of Camden, New Jersey. As a youth development nonpro!t, we seek to equip Camden’s children and young adults with skills necessary for academic achievement, life management, spiritual growth, and leadership. We accomplish this mission through several after-school programs and summer camps, experiential learning activities, two schools (K-8; 9-12), and a job training initiative. All delivered within a nurturing, familial environment, UrbanPromise programs challenge youth to identify and develop their individual potential.

Because UrbanPromise programming and operations are funded entirely by private individuals, organizations, and foundations, we attempt to manage our budget in the most cost-e"ective manner possible. In-kind gifts—non-monetary contributions of goods or services—allow UrbanPromise to direct the majority of dollars to our programming and youth. A signi!cant budget reduction for UrbanPromise, each in-kind gift is tax-deductible and an alternative way for donors to in#uence the lives of those we serve.
