PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Families,
School Council and 2020-2024 School Strategic Plan At last night’s school council meeting we discussed the report from our school review (undertaken in Term 1) and our 2020-2024 School Strategic Plan. Our goals over the coming four years are around topics (literacy, numeracy, agency, resilience, home/school partnership) which I have discussed frequently in previous newsletters and you will see this focus in the work being done by the teachers.
This week Mel Hunter, our PLC LINK leader and school Literacy leader has provided information for you around how you can support your children and teachers to ensure assessments provided give an accurate picture of your child’s capabilities; this will guide planning that will deliver learning at your child’s point of need. Accurate assessments also deliver more accurate student reports. Building teacher capacity in data literacy so that they can effectively evaluate the impact of their teaching is one strategy to improve literacy and numeracy outcomes.
Mel has created a short video outlining the most effective ways that parents can partner with teachers, when students are provided with assessment tasks or projects to be completed at home. We would love for you to watch the video below: Helping your child with assigned tasks and assessments video
Assessing students during Remote Learning There have been many challenges presented to teachers during remote learning and one of the biggest has been related to assessment. Assessment is pivotal to understanding our students – knowing where they are now and where to next. Take away the daily face to face conversations in a classroom setting and this can become a complex undertaking, with many variables and challenges.
In remote learning teachers need to rely on the interactions taking place in whole class, small group and individual conferences via WebEx. There needs to be high levels of trust that students are using their agency and resources provided to complete work independently and with minimal intervention.
Narissa Leung recently published an article to her blog “Oz Lit Teacher” outlining the complexities with assessment when teaching remotely, but also the ways in which teachers can overcome these challenges. Some of the key points from this article are:
Teachers can and should make professional judgements about students and their learning. Teacher observations and judgements ARE a valid form of assessment.
Teacher observations, the things we see and hear as we are in the act of teaching our students every day, form a highly valuable source of data around student learning needs.
When setting tasks for students, teachers need to ask themselves ‘what will I learn about my students if they fully engage with this task?’
Taking the time to set quality tasks reduces reliance on summative assessments closer to report writing time as teachers who engage in ongoing formative assessment develop deeper knowledge of their students’ strengths and needs.
The importance of parents as partners in learning
A focus on process over product – the process to get to the final product is sometimes the most important part.

Home/School Partnership
At Gisborne Primary School we value the contribution from our
families in their child/ren’s education. It is important to ensure
both the school and home, work together to support our young
people with their learning. Remote Learning is an example of
Home / School Partnership at its best.
Home-school partnerships are collaborative relationships and
activities involving school staff, parents and other family
members of students at school. Effective partnerships are
based on mutual trust and respect, and shared responsibility for
the education of the children and young people at the school.
We understand that this can be challenging for families at home, managing every-day
responsibilities and we appreciate the continued support. Our families have been amazing
with implementing the planners at home and assisting their children as needed.
Student diary
Our student diaries continue to be a great resource for students while
managing remote learning. Please encourage your child to use these
and to set up routines and structures to place reminders in their diary
and use these on a daily basis. There are also fantastic wellbeing
resources in them that students can be referring to for general wellbeing
as well as support materials for their learning.
School Values Congratulations to the students who continue to work hard with remote learning and display
the school values during this time. It is a great opportunity for our students to build skills and
strategies with displaying their Personal Best, showing Resilience while working at home, being
Caring towards others, showing Responsibility in getting ready for learning and being
Respectful towards those around you.

TALKING ITALIAN - PRACTICE MAKES PERFECTO! If your child is interested in continuing with Italian during remote learning s/he could continue to
create the book about themselves for presentation next term or record it on seesaw. The work is
designed to be differentiated so that students with more language are encouraged to demonstrate
this in their presentation. We will send an Italian language conversation page with this week’s
newsletter for families who would like to use some transactional language in their everyday
conversations.
Healthy Achievement Program G.P.S Implementing Physical Activity and Movement and improving our overall health during remote learning The Healthy Achievement Program is a Healthy Together Victoria initiative, which was jointly developed by the Department of Health and Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. The program is centred around eight main priority areas of health which include: • Healthy eating and oral health • Physical activity • Sun protection • Tobacco control • Mental health and wellbeing • Safe environments • Sexual health and wellbeing • Alcohol and other drug use
Taj and Claire work-out
This week we’re going to be treated with a work-out that has been created by Gisborne Primary School’s own Claire and Taj (demonstrated by Taj). Claire and Taj are our wonderful Fisher House leaders and they’re hoping this will get the entire school moving. They have a work-out for the Prep-2s, year 3-4s and year 5-6s. My only concern is that after you have a look at what they’ve put together, I’m at risk of losing my job!!! Enjoy.
