In your role as a:
Giract’s forthcoming seminal study on Protein Ingredients in Food and Speciality Feed 2014–2020 will
provide essential information & analyses to aid you in your strategic choices. It will include:
A global review of protein ingredients in food and speciality feed, highlighting competitive products and new
opportunities across USA, EU28, China, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. Ingredients will largely be
60%+ protein content with some exceptions such as WPC35 so as to ensure that other product types which are "rich in
protein" like "meals" are not included
Interviews with major players (manufacturers/distributors) to derive real market numbers and the key element of this
study will be the numerous interviews with users to understand market forces driving protein ingredients in food and
speciality feed
An in-depth analysis of the major end-use segments using cereal/oilseed and dairy/animal protein-based ingredients.
Novel protein sources such as algae will be included. Proteins of varying concentrations – typically between 10 and 90%
will be examined and
A tracking of industry trends; identification of market opportunities; forecast estimates to 2020
Save time and money with the readily accessible and clearly presented key market data delivered in a searchable and

GIRACT IntroductionGeneva, Switzerland
Protein ingredients play a major role in the food and feed sectors but have
faced severe challenges in the recent years following several consumer-
related issues such as health, natural, GMO, allergy, etc. Even as the
ingredient industry is trying to add value to proteins through novel
hydrolysis, texturisation, and other techniques, questions are being asked
about the strategies adopted by producers to address the growing
complexity of the issues.
Animal proteins such as gelatin, egg protein and various dairy proteins have been successfully used in various food
formulations in the West. However, health concerns and changes in consumer perception have seriously impacted
acceptance of non-dairy animal proteins. Cereal and oilseed based protein ingredients are increasingly being used in new
formulations both in the US and in Europe. A renewed focus on nutrition has benefited hydrolysed and texturised proteins.
However, these ingredients also face significant challenges, not only in delivering suitable taste and texture but increasingly
with health and consumer issues such as allergy and GMO.
These changes imply a more proactive role for managers in protein ingredient companies. The dairy industry can be cited as
an example. Soy derived “dairy” products are enjoying considerable success in the Western world. Both soy “milks” and
“yogurts” are relatively well accepted, soy based infant formula is also achieving increasing sales in a market long dominated
by milk based ingredients. Products such as tofu are finding their way into both retail and food service as cheese substitutes.

GIRACT IntroductionGeneva, Switzerland
It is of significant importance to the dairy industry to both measure and respond to the threat implied in this development.
To effectively plan their strategies, protein ingredient manufacturers must understand the attitudes of key food processors
and supplement manufacturers, as well as competition from other protein sources.
Producers of other types of protein face similar challenges, and the current study aims to understand the interplay amongst
the various animal and plant derived proteins in the food and nutraceutical sectors. As a key player in the protein industry,
this study will help you to re-orient your strategy in key markets.
This study follows an earlier successful study of the market for protein ingredients carried out by Giract in 2010. The
protein ingredient market has changed significantly since that time and this study will address the drivers which have led to
these changes and their impact in the market.
