SituationGilling Lodge is set in the heart of the pretty award-winning village of Gilling West just 2.5 miles from the A1 and 3 miles to Richmond.
There’s a gourmet dining pub just a short walk from the house and there are several other award-winning dining, deli and farm shops in the area. There are also lots of beautiful walks from the doorstep.
Richmond is an historic Georgian market town featuring extensive recreational facilities including; Richmond golf club, the old railway station which has been refurbished to house a swimming pool and gym complex, cinema and artisan bakery, coffee shop, ice cream shop, micro-brewery and art gallery. Off the historic market square you will find gourmet delis, coffee shops, art galleries and a variety of local shops featuring locally sourced products including butchers, post office and chemist. In addition, there are a selection of superb restaurants, dental practices, doctor’s surgeries, local public houses, church and bus services.
Richmond is just a short drive away from the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. To the north of Gilling Lodge is the charming town of Barnard Castle with a host of shops, cafes and pubs to explore. The area benefits from a selection of excellent state and independent schools including; Aysgarth (voted boys prep school of the year 2019 by Tatler Magazine), Barnard Castle co-ed School and Polam School for girls in Darlington.
Further south, you’ll find the pretty market town of Northallerton where handsome Georgian houses line the long main street. The wonderful Betty’s Tearooms is here as is a fantastic local deli, Lewis & Cooper’s Food Emporium and of course the quintessentially Yorkshire department store of Barkers. Also within easy reach is the gorgeous market town of Helmsley and the Star Inn at Harome. Harrogate is also just a 40 minute drive away for more upmarket shopping and dining or tea in the town’s famous Betty’s tearooms.
Further fine dining and excellent fitness and spa facilities can be found at a variety of exclusive hotels, restaurants, health clubs and spas within easy reach, including; Middleton Lodge and Rockliffe Hall. The golf club at Richmond is also just one mile away from Gilling Lodge.
Communications in the area are excellent with the mainline railway station at Darlington providing a fast and regular service to London King’s Cross and the A1 providing access to the north and south of
the country.
Gilling LodgeGilling Lodge is a beautiful Georgian country house sitting on
the edge of a pretty award-winning village near to the historic
Georgian market town of Richmond. Built in the mid eighteenth
century, the house is Grade II listed. It has been comprehensively
but sympathetically restored to the highest standard, in line with
National Trust planning guidelines, retaining original features whilst
bringing it into the 21st century. The current owners have replaced
the roof and chimney stacks, fully re-wired and re-plumbed
the property and installed a brand new central heating system,
including underfloor heating and wooden floors on the ground floor.
In addition, the property benefits from fully programmable Lutron
lighting system, future proof CAT 5/6 wiring and integrated audio
visual system. The house also benefits from integrated CCTV and
Banham security.
The house has a classic Georgian façade facing the gardens
making it particularly attractive and it is approached by a charming
entrance courtyard. The accommodation includes a welcoming
Portland stone hallway with underfloor heating and grand
cantilever staircase. From the reception hall a ‘warm’ oak floored
hallway leads to the main reception rooms providing a wonderful
flow, rarely seen in properties from this era

At the heart of the home is a fabulous large kitchen with a
comprehensively fitted range of high quality bespoke wooden
cabinetry with Italian marble and granite surfaces, built-in
Gaggengau fridges and wine fridge, Miele dishwasher, electric
oven, induction hob, microwave and steam oven, and a 5-door
electric Aga. There is a central island which provides a further work
surface and preparation area, as well as storage and a breakfast
bar. The kitchen has space for a table and chairs overlooking the
gardens, creating a really lovely area for informal family dining. The
kitchen also benefits from a separate pantry with additional freezer
space, dish washer and washing machine.
Double doors lead from the kitchen to the drawing room with its
wonderful views out to the gardens and French doors onto the
terrace. Continuing on through another set of double doors is the
beautifully appointed dining room full of period features. French
doors from the dining room lead onto a handsome walled garden,
croquet lawn and outdoor stone fireplace - perfect to gather
around for evening entertainment. The principal reception rooms,
with integrated stealth speakers (installed behind the wall plaster),
stunning Jamb marble fireplaces and interlinking flow make
Gilling Lodge a unique and outstanding home for families to come
together on a grand scale.
The main hallway also leads to a cinema room, with integrated
Bowers and Wilkins surround sound and Chesney wood burner,
perfect for family movie nights. The ground floor also benefits
from a practical slate floored boot room and WC as well as a
wood panelled study complete with Jamb fireplace providing the
perfect space for those who wish to work from home. The house
benefits from super-fast broadband with the added advantage
of the network exchange being directly adjacent to the property
perimeter boundary.
There are steps down from the main hallway to the wine cellar with
ample space for wine racks.
-
The impressive Portland stone cantilever staircase rises from the
reception hall to the first floor, with its galleried landing and ornate
ceiling, creating easy access to six principal bedrooms. On the
first floor there are a total of five bedrooms. The breath-taking
principal en suite bedroom and dressing room have an integrated
audio visual system and stealth speakers as well as benefit from
stunning views of the formal gardens and countryside beyond.
The en suite bathroom has a beautiful free-standing bath sitting
in the centre of the room. There is also a double walk-in shower
and a separate WC, positioned discreetly behind a hidden door.
The second bedroom is a delightful room overlooking the gardens
which shares a family bathroom with a further double bedroom
next door.
At the front of the house the fourth bedroom is a lovely double with
views over the enclosed courtyard and enjoying an en suite shower
room and WC. There’s also a dressing area in this room. Next door
to that is the fifth bedroom, another double room again enjoying its
own en suite bathroom with shower and WC.
The top floor features a generous bedroom, set in the eaves of
the house, with integrated audio visual system. It has a fabulous
luxurious bathroom with a free-standing feature bath and large
walk-in shower. The landing provides a quiet reading area with
large picture sky light windows providing lovely views of the
paddocks surrounding the house and the village beyond.
All the bathrooms in the house have been tastefully renovated with
Fired Earth sanitary ware and tiling.
