Title: The Girls on the Pier (bridge) Date:1901 Medium: Oil on canvas

“To walk around here is like walking among my pictures. I feel such an urge to paint when walking around in Åsgårdstrand”

The pier with slanting lines fading dramatically into the background space.

Exaggerating line and color to create haunting, ominous, moods, Munch portrays a world charged with anxiety

It’s the setting, rather than the girls’ poses and expressions, suggests they may be brooding about their identities/desires.

They appear absorbed, like the painter, in their observations of the water, the pier.

The nearest girl turns away from friends toward the viewer but her face is blank, an emotional riddle.

"Girls on the Pier." N.p., n.d. Web. <https://www.kimbellart.org/collection-object/girls-pier>.

The sandy shoreline scattered with patches of green, and the old house itself surrounded in summer by foliage and overshadowed by the often portrayed three linden trees that have grown together as if to share a common crown.

Having subjected subject with care, he adhered it closely. Munch never demonstrated more convincingly his ability to achieve simultaneous separateness and wholeness. The tree forms, while singly readable, create an articulated strain of natural growth with the patches of grass that stand together in a contrapuntal relationship to the man-made elements - the house, the fence, and the bridge. I intended to portray the artwork between reality and dreaming. A picture of the landscape I lived in will took half proportion with the rest depicting how human usually dreams in their real lives. By different layers of designs, I will be able to depict the elements of compositions, of space, and also ambiguous mood. Audience can focus on landscape as contradict to the dreamy mood of the main characters in the piece. My taken photo

The space is suitable to create human figures who appear on skies to depict the dreaming scene.

Trees are totally unrealistic and abstract. I connected people sitting on branches as one of the odd activities

A person is leaving the real world in her dream

The houses experienced with different tones and shadows. => Create a sense of 3-D in the realistic landscape portion.

I’m happy with my idea as it involves nature and nurture, illusion of foreground landscape with people flying to the sky which convey a sense of mysterious and abstract. I used acrylics and techniques of making dots for the landscape. However, the paintings look messy and un-finished. The tree looks un-real but childish and not smooth. I have to develop my skills more in order to depict the differences between reality and dream to the audience. There are still white spots and shadows of landscape looked separated. I have to emphasize the trees more as its one of the focus point of the picture.

Title: The Incomplete Truth Date:2006 Medium: Glass, painted aluminium, silicone, acrylic, stainless steel, dove and formaldehyde solution

“A perfect white dove in

flight suspended in

blue formaldehyde. After the fear of death and life, the dove arises like a

messenger of hope and a symbol of

peace”.

Damien Hirst is one of the group of Young British Artists from the late 1980’s, who like Tracey Emin – gained notoriety for their use of throw-away materials, ‘shock tactics’ and confronting the art establishment. The formaldehyde-preserved dove captures a central concern of “Natural History” works. He spread the message that “That failure of trying so hard to do something that you destroy the thing that you’re trying to preserve”. INSPIRATION: I really like how Hirst create composition so that the dove stand out, strongly by its two powerful wings and how he decided to capture the bird at the front angle. The green glass box with the large area helps audiences easier to observe the powerful of the bird as even though it’s a small object, it’s the focus point. There are also clear shadows to show 3-dimension realistically.

INTENTION and IDEAS DEVELOPED WITH PROCESS INTENTION My intention is to epitomize the extraordinary powers of 3-D dove to foreshadow Viet Nam’s reborn after war. In context, ‘Dove’ is opposite to ‘hawk’ which is a group who opposed war. Have always been known as inexhaustible sources of essence throughout most cultures, doves intrigued me to depict their powerful spirits, cares, and devotions to nurture the re-born country. Similar to Damien Hirst, I was then instead combine birds with landscape of Viet Nam to showed how it spread believes and hopes to the citizens.

Focus on main body, proportional and balance

Two wings are balance and showed powerful lie upon there

Face expression of the doves looking straight towards audiences

WINGS and BODY

TAIL

Using morocks, paper and wire Then cutting papers to make second layers. Make sure that the wires of the two wings are equally balance in both sides

Apply the same method, however tails require a template, like image illustrated using paper. Also, papers cut has to be sharper so that it looks real like tails.

TAIL + BODY Linking tail to body is essential and critical. The template is now use to attach to the ending part of the body part

PAINTED BODY

Use clay to make the body of the bird

I painted the dove with different shades of white, black, and grey. The wings will be total white to show the emphasis

Page 9: Gillian Lavery Pauline Burbidge Shelley Rhodeslaurathomsonart.weebly.com/uploads/5/0/3/9/50394073/studentepro… · away materials, ‘shock tactics’ and confronting the art establishment

I am happy that my dove has successful showed its powers and the exquisite design combined by materials of wire, morrock, and paper cutting. The wings are proportional to both sides and show different layers of fur represented by paper cutting, this makes it looks more realistic. Thetail has successful attached showed that I am successful with the design.

DIFFICULTIES IN PROGRESS The clay is not that stable so the part of the nose has been fallen off. Painting on clay is not that effective as the paints start to wiped off Because of using glue gun to glue, so there are scars of my fingers stick on the body of the birds Repaint many times

METHOD EVALUATION Glue gun doesn’t work well on clay and paint on the surface

Wings are too heavy compare to the body so it fell off

Can’t really stick wings, the paints even corrupted, looks unfinished

There should have been a wire to link the body with the wing at first moment

MODIFICATIONS FOR IMPROVEMENTS - The process is to

remade – paint first and then stick together

- process: clay, clue gun, and stick together

- Needed a wire go through birds’ body towards the wing

- Instead of separate them out

SUCCESSFUL WITH INTENTION: To co-operate nature vs. nurture for the birth of new country after much suffering from American War. The sorrow and destruction would be resolved by the companion, spiritual, and united nation where each of the citizens ready to lean against each other. to depict the desire of freedom and peace; to honour the heroism of Vietnam that leads us to victory -“paradise” like today. IMPROVEMENT: - Develop more on the use of stylists- digital drawing

depth - Scale the sketches on woman’s body.

Page 12: Gillian Lavery Pauline Burbidge Shelley Rhodeslaurathomsonart.weebly.com/uploads/5/0/3/9/50394073/studentepro… · away materials, ‘shock tactics’ and confronting the art establishment

INTENTION with IDEAS: Taking real photographs around the districts in the city to portray different valuable live situations , and to depict the contrast of the extravagant lives with that of difficulties lives.

ALBUM Use these photographs to do hand-made album as a diary portray different shades of lives to the audience.

A word that seem perfect in beauty.. Yet buried beneath the immaculateness laid

iniquities and imperfections…!

TECHNIQUES - Images - Paper cut - Hand-made materials

Evaluation and Improvements: - The album conveys a sympathy mood, portraying the

reality of the society we live in. Engage audience to zoom in to each corner and to contribute our hands to help to actually define what a united society should be. In each page, there is a purpose such as conveying how people work for others, how people live under the trash while others sit in the car, etc.

- However, I should improve on the quality of the album such as cutting the images more neat and careful, arrange handmade materials to decorate in a more sufficient way. I should also instead handwriting use digital such as Photoshop to make it looks more proficient.

Hand-written: Could be viewed as a diary, a journey from a tourist, or a citizen who understands well her society

Title: Cut the taken photos to small broken pieces, glue together to create texture
