We are off to a great start to the 2018-2019 school year! I want to thank our parents for a warm welcome and your continued support as we partner for student success. Gildo Rey is a busy school environment and student safety is our #1 priority. We need your help. I would ask that drivers remain in their cars in the fire lanes and use the designated drop off areas to help expedite student drop off and pick up. Our parking lot is very congested and everything we can do to safely expedite car pick up is important. We request parent and family members who pick up students after school to pick up their students in the designated areas outside of the courtyard. These areas include car pick up, parent pick up next to the large parking lot, Kindergarten pick up from the gym and office pick up. We are also working to improve campus security by enhancing some of our areas with fencing. I would also ask that we keep dogs out of the pick-up areas. I love dogs and have dogs of my own however our children may excite dogs when they are brought into our busy student pick up areas. Our goal is to safely and securely reunite students with families each day and your efforts are both needed and greatly appreciated.

Attention bicycle riders: Students must be in the 3rd through 5

th grade to ride their bike to school and have a

signed parent permission slip on file. These forms are available in the office. Also, it is required by law that our children riding bicycles must wear a helmet. Bicycles should be locked to the bike rack in front of our office each day for security reasons and walked while on our school’s sidewalks.

Breakfast Line

Breakfast is a busy time. We understand that

students are excited about getting breakfast and

starting their day! We would like to mention a

couple of things that would help make the

breakfast line flow easier. Please make sure all

students have their numbers ready if they do not

have it memorized.

Also, we are asking that only students go into

the serving area. This will allow students to learn

how to go through the serving area

independently. Fewer people going through can

help the flow of the line as well as the noise level.

By keeping the serving area open and quiet,

kitchen staff can hear and speak to students that

might need help with their numbers and food

Thank you for your interest in being a volunteer!

In order to volunteer in our schools, in athletics or in any other area in the Auburn School District a background check

must be completed. You can do that by visiting http://www.auburn.wednet.edu/volunteer or by following the below steps:

1. Click on the Auburn School District homepage

2. Click on the Community tab

3. Click on Volunteering in our Schools

5. Read the GET STARTED information on the volunteer application system page

6. Click Register and follow the online prompts

7. Once your application is checked against the Washington State Patrol background check information you will

receive an email notifying you of your application status. Please fill out the form completely and upload all

required documentation.

Hello, if I haven’t met you already, my name is Jamie Watson and I am so excited to be the school counselor at Gildo Rey this year.

As we start the new school year, we always like to remind all of our students about some of the appropriate ways to solve conflict. Our goal is to teach students several positive ways to deal with these difficult situations. To do this, we use a program called Kelso’s Choices. Kelso’s Choices teaches students who have a minor problem or conflict to try at least two of the following ideas:

Go to another game. Share and take turns. Talk it out (talk and listen to each other respectfully). Walk away from the problem. Ignore the problem behavior. Ask the person to stop. Apologize. Make a deal/ compromise. Wait and cool off.

Goodlett’s Goods -

Hooray it is October! My job is to support students, staff and families. If your child needs a little something extra at school

to help them do their best, it is my pleasure to help them. Here are some great reminders of how you can help your child

learn their best at school:

Sleep! 9-11 hours each night is recommended for elementary age kids.

Early is on time! Please have your child at their classroom with their breakfast by 8:30 am.

9 Days or less! Please make sure your child comes to school everyday and misses no more than 9 days in a year .

That is 1 per month.

Read! Help them read for 20 minutes and review their math facts for 5-10 minutes every night.

Celebrate all the great things they do at home, encouraging their good behavior helps them feel confident. Try for 5

positive comments for every 1 corrective comment to your children. Please ask them what they learned each night and how

they know they learned it, this is a great reflection for them and helps you connect what is going on at school with what is

happening at home. Thank you!

Hola, si no te he conocido, me llamo Jamie Watson y estoy muy emocionada de ser el consejero escolar de Gildo Rey este año.

Al comenzar del nuevo año escolar, siempre nos gusta recordar a todos nuestros estudiantes acerca de algunas maneras más adecuadas para resolver conflictos. ¡Ya es octubre! Mi trabajo es apoyar a los estudiantes, el personal y las familias. Si su hijo necesita algo extra en la

escuela para ayudarlo hacer lo mejor, es un placer para mí ayudarlo. Aquí hay algunos recordatorios de cómo puede

ayudar a su hijo a aprender lo mejor posible en la escuela:

¡Dormir! Se recomienda de 9 a 11 horas cada noche para niños de edad elemental.

¡Temprano es a tiempo! Por favor tenga a su hijo en su salón de clases con su desayuno antes de las 8:30 am.

You Must Be Present To Win

I remember a time when I was a young college age student that I had an opportunity to enter a drawing contest. My friends spent a lot of time convincing me that I stood a great chance of winning the $100.00 prize (Back in the day that was a lot of money). They handed me the flyer and then continued to bug me until I actually took the time to sit down and draw a picture that I would be proud to enter. I remember it vividly, it was a charcoal drawing of a mother panda cradling her baby in her arms. I used every technique that I had perfected to make it look life-like, so that the picture would “jump off the page.” Every detail was accounted for, shading, shadowing, and perspective. Every hair was in place, every light spot, every leaf of the bamboo that was growing in the background. Technically it was one of my best pieces. I turned it in and waited to hear back from the sponsors of the contest. I was sure that I would win. Perhaps I would have, but I will never know, for I had neglected to read the fine print on the flyer my friends handed to me. It stated: “You must be present to win.” Present to Win? What do you mean, present to win? It turns out that the winner was announced at an event where all the entries would be displayed. Unfortunately because I wasn’t present, I didn’t win.

That drawing still hangs on our wall as a gentle reminder of the lesson that I learned so long ago. It is a powerful lesson that applies to so many areas of our lives, including school attendance. Attendance is critically important. So much so that the State of Washington has put Compulsory Attendance Laws in place to protect all our children. As a parent, I know that I wanted my children to do well, to succeed, to win. However, that meant that I had to make sure that they showed up for school on time and stayed all day. At Gildo Rey we believe that “All” our students have the potential to “Win,” but the only way they can win is if they are “Present.” Please partner with us to set your child up for success, by making sure that they are here every day, all day, and on time.

Debes estar presente para ganar,

Recuerdo que en un tiempo cuando era un joven estudiante en un universitario tuve la oportunidad de participar en un concurso de dibujo. Mis amigos pasaron mucho tiempo convenciéndome de que tenía una gran oportunidad de ganar el premio de $100 (en el pasado era mucho dinero). Me entregaron el folleto y luego continuaron molestándome hasta que realmente me tomé el tiempo para sentarme y hacer un dibujo en el que estaría orgulloso de entrar. Lo recuerdo vívidamente, era un dibujo de un panda madre acunando a su bebé en sus brazos. Utilicé todas las técnicas que había perfeccionado para que parecieran reales, de modo que la imagen "saltara de la página". Cada detalle se tuvo en cuenta, sombreado y en perspectiva. Cada cabello estaba en su lugar, cada punto de luz, cada hoja de bambú que crecía en el fondo. Técnicamente fue una de mis mejores piezas.
