Harold Whittle was born in Lancashire, England, in 1916, one of six children. He served in the anti-aircraft section of the British Army in WW11 and took part in Operation Dynamo, rescuing British troops from the beaches of Dunkirk. Harold met Toowoomba-born Sybel Lindley in London where she had studied before she joined the British Army at the outbreak of the war. They married in 1942 and in 1946 moved to Australia with their two-year-old daughter Susan. Their son Simon was born in 1952. Settling in Buderim In 1949, the Whittles subdivided 24 allotments from their thirty-eight-acre property in a development that required the dedication and construction of a new road, now known as Horseshoe Bend. Using his life-long interest in commercial art, Harold started a business in Nambour specialising in logos and sign writing. In 1963, Harold and Sybel purchased the Maroochydore Advertiser and the Caloundra Weekly. In 1972, they sold the business to Provincial Newspapers Queensland where Harold continued to work until 1974 when he suffered a debilitating stroke. As part of a group that helped establish Headland Golf Club and under Harold’s presidency in 1965, Headland Golf Club was officially opened by the President of the Queensland Golf Union as an eighteen hole, 6288-yard course. As well as his dedication and commitment to the Club and its stewardship, he demonstrated in 1960 his golfing prowess, becoming Club Champion the same year as his wife Sybel. Harold was president for six of the years between 1960 and 1974. He also undertook the role of Captain four times between 1958 and 1967. His considerable talents of being able to undertake many tasks with enthusiasm and humour were fondly referred to as the ‘face of welcome’ to the Club. In 1969, he was made a life member. Harold served as a volunteer Division 4 (then Buderim) councilor for the Maroochy Shire Council from 1961 to 1964. He was a keen Rotarian, a member of the Buderim War Memorial Community Centre (now BWMCA) and a member of the Buderim Amateur Theatrical Society (BATS). A natural sportsman, he was primarily involved in cricket, tennis, and golf. Headland Golf Club owes much to both Harold and his wife Sybel for their dedication and commitment to the club’s beginning, the subsequent improvements to the course in the following years and supporting their local community.
