Florence, XIII century. Buoso the Elder, the head of the family Donati has died. He was a very rich merchant, a widower with no children. Following his passing his relatives immediately arrive at his house, not to say their final goodbyes to the deceased, but because they are interested in their inheritance. But there is one problem: everyone says that the old man has left the immense wealth to the friary of Santa Reparata. There is only one thing to do: find the will, hoping that this is not already in the hands of a notary. The Relatives search everywhere, until the young Rinuccio, nephew of Buoso, finally finds it! The will is opened but a bitter surprise awaits the relatives: all the inheritance will go to the brothers of Santa Reparata. A solution must be found : Rinuccio must contact the astute merchant Gianni Schicchi, whose daughter is Lauretta and who he is deeply in love with. Zita, rinuccios aunt and sister of Buoso donati absolutely do not want to have anything to do with Gianni Schicchi. She considers him as a lowly peasant and oppose the marriage of her nephew Rinuccio with Lauretta. Rinuccio is not at all in agreement and, very sensibly, invites everyone to put aside their prejudices: Section 2 Zita insults Gianni Schicchi, and Rinuccio begs him for help, this then evolves into huge a argument between the whole family. Gianni Schicchi, exasperated, decides to leave and gives a scathing rebuke to Zita. He wants to take Lauretta away from this family but she would rather stay with her lover Rinuccio; she tries to plead with her father Gianni Schicchi. Scene 3 The Twist: unexpectedly Master Spinelloccio arrives, the doctor of Buoso Donati. He does not know that his patient died and inquires about his health. Gianni Schicchi, then slips into the bed of Buoso and, hidden behind the canopy, imitates the voice of Buoso reassuring the doctor that his treatment has worked; Master Spinelloccio is proud of his therapy. Straight after!!!!!! Scene 4 Having cheated the Master Spinelloccio, Gianni Schicchi continues to perfect his plan: he pretends that Buoso Donati is still alive and in the presence of the notary begins to dictate a new will that will replace the original one. But now, Gianni Schicchi has to explain to the relatives of Buoso of how his idea will work and ask them: Scene 5 The Relatives reassure and congratulate Gianni Schicchi for his amazing idea, the perfect solution to their troubles! But Gianni Schicchi warns them that the project is risky and if they were exposed that they would be exiled from Florence and have their hands cut off for punishment.
Scene 6 Each of the relatives unbeknownst to eachother, all secretly promise Gianni Schicchi a lot of money if he would include them in the drawing up of the will. The notary finally arrives and Gianni Schiccchi, pretending to be Buoso distributes the money in cash, in equal parts to all the relatives; they seem satisfied and even expect to have the largest part of the inheritance but, when speaking of the mule, the house and the mills of Signa -‐ Gianni assigns them, to himself. At this point, the family (whilst in front of the notary and witnesses) can not stop Gianni Schicchi, they angrily await the exit of the notary and curse the crafty merchant who has cheated them. In a last attempt of a cash reward they try to steal the most precious objects in the house that now belong to Gianni Schicchi whilst screaming"Thief, thief”
