Speech and Prize Giving Day

The 2018/2019 annual speech and prize giving day was on Tuesday, 25th June 2019, at the Junior School’s assembly hall. The event started on nine o’clock but the students started filling in the assembly hall by eight thirty.Students of Ghana International school, parents and special guests participated in the event. Prizes were awarded to each year group. Students waited with eager anticipation to find out if they would get prizes and be on the honour roll. Some were excited to hear their names called out, others were inspired to work harder next year to get one.

First, there was a performance from the traditional dancers in the Junior School with accompaniment of the drums. They showcased local dance moves and routines from the various regions of Ghana. They led the honourable special guests, the keynote speaker Mrs. Priscilla Koranteng-Gyasi, our dear Vice Principal Ms. Nadia Bruce-Muller and invited members from the G.I.S. P.T.A. and alumni.

Then, it was followed by a warm welcome and the singing of the Ghanaian national anthem and the G.I.S. school song by our presenters Mr. Mensah and Mrs. Appiah.

Next, Ms. Bruce-Muller was invited to give the welcome speech and introduce our keynote speaker who was born to a big family of seven children! We found out that she graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She was also the mother of the student was our Junior School’s Head Girl - Michaela!

After the speech by Mrs. Gyasi, the prize giving began. Some of the awards given out included: the best behaved student, 1st and 2nd class prize, PE prize, best athlete, Maths, English, French, Science, History, Geography and many more. For each year group, a different parent was given the honour of awarding the prizes to the winners.

The prizes were awarded by year group Starting from Year 3 upwards. Some people got as many as seven or eight prizes! Students were surprised and amazed to hear their name mentioned because they had not been informed whether they were getting a prize or not.

After that, there were special prizes given to some Year 6s who had worked very hard and showed exemplary behaviour throughout the three terms. The prizes were for the overall year group, not only class. The special prizes were given by a sponsored parent who took care of buying the prizes and wrapping it up. There was also a V.P.’s special prize awarded to a boy and a girl who had shown exemplary behaviour throughout the year. They were awarded to Jerome Parkes and Lila Favilli.

GIS Sports Day 2019 Blue house wins again!

On the 19th of April 2019, the pupils of Ghana International School celebrated an annual occasion, Sports Day. Sports Day is an exciting opportunity for various students from different houses; Red, Yellow, Blue and Green to compete against each other for a trophy It took place the El-Wak Sports Stadium. Every Year, it is celebrated by students from each house who take part in various races and activities. There were snacks being shared to keep us energised for the day.

It all started when students walked into the stadium in their house colours and sat down in their designated areas, which were decorated with their house colours. After a few minutes of waiting, they all rose up and walked to the racing track, where they lined up in houses, as the exercises were about to take place. After that, they sang the school song and went back to the seating areas waiting for their names to be called out to begin participating in the various races.

Soon, the races began. Races such as girls flat race, boys relay race, the high jump event, mixed relay race, hurdles through obstacles, 200m flat race, 100m flat race, 4 by 100m and more took place. It was so much fun! After a few races they paused and gave out medals to some children for winning gold, silver and bronze. Points were allocated to the houses of participants who won gold, silver and bronze.

48th Annual Sponsored Walk

On Saturday 12th October 2019, the 48th Annual Sponsored walk was organised by the G.I.S. members of the P.T.A. in memory of two Ghana International School students who were killed by a mentally ill person many years ago. Each year the Sponsored Walk seeks to raise money towards mental health.

Participants registered at the G.I.S. Secondary School to gain access to the bus as early as 5:30 am!

At 6:30 in the morning everyone gathered in the G.I.S. Secondary School to get a jacket and sit in the bus. At 8:00 everyone got ready and set off. The journey took one hour to get to the starting point. Junior School started this amazing walk at 9:30 and the Secondary School started a few minutes later.

Soon after, the Secondary School students passed some Junior School students. The students ran with power and determination and successfully reached the first post. Refreshment was available at this area. The ground was wet and muddy, due to heavy rains that occurred the previous day. Despite the weather conditions, in true G.I.S. spirit, there was a great turn out and everyone tried their best to complete the long walk.

It was a great accomplishment and celebration for all those who took part. The school enjoyed the walk so much they wanted to do it again. Even though it was slightly tiring, it was worth it!

Prefect Elections 2019Have you ever wondered how presidents got to be presidents? Well usually, it all starts when they are in school and they get leadership positions/roles. This academic year, G.I.S. held its annual Junior School prefect elections 2019 Thursday the 26th of September.

This year, letters were given to various students, giving them the exciting news that they had been nominated as the prefects for the 2019/2020 academic year! The nominees were ordered to compose a persuasive speech, convincing pupils to vote for them, as well as the teachers. Nominees were given about two days to practice their speeches and fill out their application forms which determine if they will become a prefect or not. Children were told that they would read it to the whole school at a special prefect assembly.

The wait felt long and exasperating though it was only a two day period. Everyone was working hard to make their speeches as successful as possible. Application forms were filled and nominees chatted about who was to get the title of Head Girl and Head Boy.

At last, the day arrived. As the school day started out bright and early on a Thursday morning, prefect nominees from Year 6 filed into the Junior School assembly hall sitting, eagerly waiting for their turn to read out their speeches. Each nominee had high hopes that they would win the opportunity to help lead the Junior School. All twenty-two nominees climbed the stage for the voters to hear what they had written.

After the swearing in of the prefects, Our Head Boy and Head Girl gave an appreciative speech on behalf of the new Prefect body. Prefects were ecstatic and took pictures galore. Congratulations to all badge holders!

Meet our Head Boy and Head Girl

Adam Walker

our very own head boy and head girl were interviewed exclusively for nkomo pa. here’s what they had to say:

Q: Why did you want to become a prefect? Adam: I thought it was a good responsibility to take on. I thought it was a great privilege and opportunity. Maame Akua: To help set a good example for my fellow students. To help ensure that G.I.S. remains a bully-free place. Q: How did it feel to be elected as Head Boy/Girl? Adam: It felt great to become a responsible leader. Helping others and making sure newcomers feel welcome will be my priority. Maame Akua: I felt very grateful for all the teachers and pupils that elected me! I also felt nervous as I was handling a big responsibility. Q: What are your responsibilities as Head Boy/Girl? Adam: Making sure people are doing the right thing. Maame Akua: To be a great example for my fellow students and kindly address students if they are doing something wrong. Q: What challenges have you faced as Head Boy/Girl? Adam: Not many so far. One real challenge was to write my application form because I knew it would help me go far with the elections. Maame Akua: People pointing and shouting “Hey look at the Head Girl!’' Sometimes it seems they forget that I am a fellow student. Q: What do you aim to achieve as Head Boy/Girl? Adam: Helping others will be my greatest achievement. Maame Akua: To help the pupils of the Junior School know that it is essential and good manners to say good morning or afternoon to any adult or fellow student and to follow rules that teachers or the School Board have set.

Maame Akua Koduah-Sarpong

Celebrating U.N. Week at G.I.S.We all know U.N. Day is one of the highlights on the G.I.S. calendar. This great occasion takes place at G.I.S. annually, to show appreciation for the United Nations and to mark the significant day that it was created. This year, for the first time since G.I.S. began celebrating U.N. Day, the school decided that this year there was going to be a twist. A whole week dedicated to learning more about the U.N. and what it does around the world! This week was filled with fun activities which took place across the school.

On the first day, the Model United Nations (M.U.N.) club members explained to the Junior School some of the activities that were to be completed during the week. The M.U.N. club then gave the students some information about the U.N.  and told the Junior school that they were going to play a game to test their memory of what they had learned! They were divided into two teams and were asked questions about the United Nations. All the students were eager to participate to win points for their team.

Tuesday was a splendid day for the younger students. The Year 3s were sent on a treasure hunt to find all 17 S.D.G.s (Sustainable Development Goals). The Year 4 and 5s did the same activities and screams of excitement and joy could be heard from all across the premises.

The Year 6s , however, were instructed to spend 1 billion dollars. This was so that they could see that this amount of money is not enough for the U.N. to solve the Worlds problems. Everyone was told to create a poster about four chosen S.D.G.s. Winners were announced at a special assembly and posters were stapled on on a board in the Year 5 hall, which are on display for everyone to see.

On the final day (Friday), we all came to school dressed in our national costumes and colours. A surprise was set for the lucky Junior School. After break, oblivious to everything, they lined up in the ICT courtyard and marched along to the field. Loud music drummed in everyone’s ears and the parade begun! All the year-groups circled the field and danced to their heart’s content. The week ended with popcorn and lemonade for everybody. It definitely was a successful week!

Do you have research to do for a project, assignment or homework? Are you stuck and don’t know where to start? Well, don’t worry, here are some useful tips to help you do your research the right way

1. Go to the library and borrow books based on the project. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, then ask the librarian for help.

2. If allowed to access the internet, search for facts on the internet that would help you.

3. Include important facts that you need to add to your research.

4. Don’t just write any information or fact you find, pick out the useful ones and include in your research.

5. Write facts or information based on your research topic, if you stray from your topic, the research won’t be relevant.

6. Plan out your information on a piece of paper and you include your facts with the research on a different paper.

7. Check over your fact in case it is not reliable or not real. You can verify it using another material to cross check.

8. Try your best not to copy the exact word or sentence you find for your fact. Try to change it a little bit into your own words.

9. You can decide to write a reference at the end of your research to show where you get your information from.

10. If you are doing a group work research, you can discuss with your partner what you would put in your project and what you wouldn’t. Try to have an agreement.

Welcome to the Junior School

The Junior School welcomed a new group of Year 3’s this September. As newcomers to the junior School, we wanted to find out from some Year 3 students, what their experience has been so far. We interviewed Ethan Hutton-Mills - 3 Mansonia and Kwame Appiah Menka - 3 Sapele. Here’s what they had to say…

Q: What were your first impressions of the Junior School? Ethan: At first I thought that teachers were strict, work would be hard and things would be different. Kwame: I would not make any friends and teachers were strict.

Q: How have you adjusted to being a part of the Junior School? Ethan: I have friends and family to help me adjust to being in the Junior School, so I haven’t had any problems. Kwame: I have made friends and learnt the concept of multiplying and dividing.

Q: How is the Junior School different from the Infant School? Ethan: The Junior School have exams, while the Infant School doesn’t. The Infant School have easier work and the Junior School has more lessons. Kwame: We have assembly on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Infant School but the Junior School’s assemblies are on Thursdays.

Q:What challenges have you faced in the Junior School so far? Ethan: My challenges are the exams and sometimes finding work difficult. Kwame: I have had a hard time doing exams and test papers, mostly in English.

Q: What is the most important thing you have learnt since being in the Junior School? Ethan: When you are late to school, you miss things. So always try to be on time. Kwame: I have learnt to be socially responsible.

G.I.S. has got Talent!

On the 28th of November 2019, the Junior School had its first talent showcase assembly. This assembly took place at the Junior School Assembly Hall and proud parents, teachers, fellow students, the V.P. (Ms. Nadia Bruce-Muller) and the A.V.P. (Mrs.Jennifer Blankson) gathered to watch talented students perform on stage. This assembly was fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their non academic talents and interests.

Students from various year groups took part in the assembly. There was a wide variety of talents on display. These included: playing the piano, gymnastics, weight-lifting, playing the violin, spoken word, rapping and taekwondo. The Junior School roared with excitement when two Year 4s rapped on stage.

The Junior School definitely enjoyed this particular assembly but what about the performers themselves? Well, Krishiv said, “I really enjoyed the talent assembly.” Rhia said “I was a bit nervous but I enjoyed the talent assembly.” Helena said,”I was nervous but confident in a way.”

It seems that everyone loved the talent assembly. It was great fun! The Junior School is very happy with this talent assembly and are even demanding for another one. All in all, whether watching or performing, all students enjoyed the talent assembly. This assembly proved that G.I.S. has got talent! Who will be on stage next?

Commonwealth Essay Awards

The awards were divided into three parts; gold, silver and bronze categories. Winners of these awards were called up on stage to receive their certificates from the special guests. Participants who did not get a category award received the participation award. These children had their names read out and were acknowledged for their efforts by being asked to stand up. Various students from different year groups got an award.

Dr. Mary Ashun - our Principal mentioned that Elise, a Form 2 student, received the overall second place prize. That means her essay was the second best out of all the entries submitted from students in Commonwealth countries all over the world. What an achievement! G.I.S. is very proud of her. Her prize includes a trip to London with the chance of meeting the Queen of England in Buckingham Palace!

Dr. Ashun stated that she was very proud of the school for entering the Commonwealth Essay Competition and even though some of our essays did not make it so far, every student in G.I.S. is a winner. This assembly inspired all of us to try even harder to create brilliant essays for the next competition.

Social Responsibility

To be socially responsible means showing concern towards others, your community, the environment and the larger society.

What does it mean to you? As it is the attribute of the 2019-2020 academic year for Ghana International School, it marks the headline of the school’s activities. An example is the School Stationery Drive . This to collect unwanted school supplies for charity. This is a very good way of displaying social responsibility, by giving to those who are less fortunate than you.

What is social responsibility then? Is it just a simple gesture in an attempt to help someone or actually changing someone’s life? It is all up to you.

You can make the world a better place even if it means starting out small.Think about what you can change in your household or community. Picture ways in which you can help others in need.

You are never too small to make a difference. Regular donations to charity can completely change a person’s life.

However, it is your decision to think about. What do you want to do differently to make a positive impact? Remember, it is up to YOU!

By Zara Jane Danso - 5 Euptelea

Examples of being socially responsible are:

Charitable giving

Volunteering

Being aware of others (showing empathy) e.g. their feelings, living conditions, plight etc.

Conserving energy and protecting the environment from pollution etc.

Club ReviewsEver wondered what goes on in the various co-curricular and after school clubs? Well, read these reviews to find out!

Beading club

The beading co-curricular club is a fun club where we make all sorts of crafts and objects, using beads. We use different kinds of colourful and sparkly beads to make our beautiful masterpiece.

This term we have been able to accomplish making tissue boxes, but we are still working on them so that they will be perfect.

What I enjoy most about beading club is that It takes place in a quiet room so we can concentrate. We play soft music so that it is relaxing. Our club coordinators are kind and will always be ready when we ask for help; we can learn from our mistakes.

By Ewurabena Asmah - 5 Euptelea

Twi club

Twi Club has been fun, interesting and very educational. We have learnt how to say greetings and body parts in the Twi language. We have also learnt some Twi songs and some fun traditional games.

I would recommend Twi Club to others because it is a good opportunity to develop your skills in the Twi language. we have a fantastic instructor who helps us and makes it fun. It is great to learn Twi, a local language commonly spoken here in Ghana.

Mini Twi lesson: akwaaba - welcome

maakye - good morning maaha - good afternoon maadwo - good evening

da yie - good night nante yie - safe journey/goodbye

yoo - okay

Chess club

In chess club, we have learnt why it is important to play chess. We have learnt the names and moves of the chess pieces: the bishop, pawn, queen, knight and rook. The queen is the most powerful chess piece. She can move in all directions. The rook can only move horizontally and vertically. The knight moves in an ‘L’ shape. The pawn can move only one step at a time. It can capture other pieces diagonally and only moves twice when on the starting line.

In chess, every piece has a value. For example, the pawn’s value is only one. What I enjoy in the chess club is playing against my partner; Genia. Genia is in Class 4 but being in chess club has made her mind stronger. Chess is a great game. It is challenging, fun and enjoyable all at the same time. I have really enjoyed improving my chess skills in chess club this term.

After school I.C.T. club

So far in after school I.C.T. club, we have been practising coding using code.org. We have been given many tricky challenges, but we managed to complete them.

After school I.C.T. is a very fun club where we have been learning a lot about coding and programming. We have also been learning to make games on code.org.

After school I.C.T. is a club which teaches us a lot about coding, so that we can make fun games that people all around the world can enjoy playing. The students in after school I.C.T. find it lots of fun and very exciting and we love doing the challenges.

Basic steps on how to code

1. First, you look for the block you need. If you want to move forward, you pick the move forward block.

2. Next, you join your block to the orange block.3. Once you have done that, you should click on the button that says run.

4. If you make a mistake with the code, just press the reset button then you can correct the mistake.

Stone Age DayOn the Stone Age Activity Day, there were lots of activities. Our first activity took place in the assembly hall, where we had a Stone Age quiz. The Stone Age quiz was amazing! There were questions about fire and more.

The second activity I did was jewellery making out of seashells. You could make a headband or a necklace. I made a headband with yellow string. There was blue string, green string, yellow string and red string.

The next activity was colouring. We each drew an old Stone Age animal then coloured it in. I drew a woolly mammoth. As I was colouring, Ms. Frimpong read a wonderful poem about the Stone Age.

After the poem, off I went to the next activity. The next activity I did was stone painting. I painted a giraffe on a stone then put it down to dry.

I wandered around before I went for the last activity of the day. It was making weapons. I got a stick with red paint then threw it on the board. That was the last activity.

The whole day was so much fun. It was as if we were really in the Stone Age. It was really fun I wish I could do it again.

On the 12th of October 2019, the Year 4 pupils of Ghana International School went on a trip to The Weija Dam. The main purpose of the trip was to learn more about dams in relation to their Geography lesson on Dam.

We got to the site at exactly 11:30 am. When we arrived, we had to wait in the bus for the tour guide before we disembarked. Once the tour guide arrived, the students and teachers marched to the main dam. The tour guide taught us a lot and we got the chance to see the gates spill. The gates were spilling at 6 inches. The tour guide said to the students, “This is the Weija Dam; this is for irrigation and electricity.”

He also mentioned that the dam was built between 1972 and 1974 and the fact that the reservoir beside the dam is used by people for fishing and navigation.

At exactly 12:20 pm, the students and teachers moved to the bus and students had their lunch. We then left and set off back to school. It was an enjoyable and educational trip for us all. “This trip was my favourite in G.I.S,” said Martin Honny - Class 4

A Mad and Mysterious ChristmasAn original story by Kezia Opoku-Agyeman - 6 Mahogany

Christmas was drawing near. Across the Fraen Lane, colourful lights shone brightly on Christmas trees and high roof-tops. Snowmen stood proudly on the mini front lawns of little Fraen cottages. Christmas carols rang in the ears of James and John as they walked down the frosty lane towards the centre of the busy town. They strolled down compact stalls, admiring the window items. Soon, they reached the verge of the little town where they spotted a very strange and mysterious stall. It was shaped like a bat wings.

“Didn’t the annual Christmas Santa Grotto use to be here?” a puzzled John asked. “Yes,” replied James.‘We always pass here on our way to school and back home.’

The sign on the strangely carved oak door was what puzzled them the most. It read, “Come in here to experience the Christmas of your lifetime on the 25th of December.” The atmosphere was very unwelcoming.

Days passed, then weeks. Finally, the day everyone had been waiting for had arrived. At the zenith of the afternoon, James and John dashed out of their houses towards the town. Everywhere was buzzing with people. They had decided to have a look at the mysterious stall at the edge before going to the fireworks display.

Feeling nervous, they stepped in. Dramatic music filled the air creating an effect of fear. Suddenly, the lights went off.

“Ha! Ha! Ha!” a spine-chilling voice echoed through the room. “Welcome to the world of no-Christmas!”

Everything happened in a blur. The lights turned on. People scrambled into hiding. Goblins appeared in their numbers from nowhere, evil grins sitting on their green faces. James and John spied on them and their master, the Glitch, from their hiding behind a broad and towering pillar. Their master had green skin just like the goblins but he was different from everyone else. He had a long twisted beard with an icy, fur coat and an ice-filled blood ring on his finger.

“Quick, Run for it!” whispered James to John.Together they dashed for the door and out the building.

“Phew!†said John, sounding relieved. “That was close!”

“Yeah,” replied James. “Come on let us go to the fireworks display. It’s already late.”
