Why are we worrying about Facebook, anyway?

Libraries have to make their presence known in the community.

And where does the community spend a lot of their spare time?

FACEBOOK!

Facebook posts make the library more relatable.

Prove to patrons how cool we are by posting fun materials…

In turn, they’ll realize that the library is a place to socialize and relax!

• Always make sure your library Facebook page has the correct address, opening hours, phone number, and other vital information.

• Patrons can see this on the Facebook app. It will help them call you if they have a question, they’ll get directions from the address you provide, and find out what services you have to offer.

When to post… EVERY DAY.

Its obvious once you think about it, but studies show that people look at their Facebook:

• Mornings before work and school, 7am-9am

• Afternoons during lunch, 12pm-2pm

• After work and school, 4pm-7pm

So target your post times around 7am, 11:50am, and 3:30pm• Scheduling posts about 10 minutes earlier will make sure

patron’s don’t miss it in their newsfeed

Scheduling Posts in Advance

Find the schedule button by clicking the blue arrow beside ‘Post’.

This will let you schedule Facebook posts in advance.

Don’t spend 5 days a week on Facebook. Schedule your posts in advance.

This will save you a lot of time.

What to post

ALWAYS post about your programs. Funny pictures are great, but you still want to get patrons in the door. ALWAYS include who, what, when, where, and why.

Get a routine and plan your posts. For example:

• Monday – Post staff picks for favorite titles• Tuesday – Book Quotes• Wednesday – Inform patrons on movies based on

books• Thursday - Resources at the library that patrons

might not know about, for example placing holds online.

• Friday - Book trivia Q&A. Try to stump your patrons with questions about semi-popular books.

Post Material

Meagan is working on building a folder for everyone to use that will have hundreds of photos to use for Facebook. Until then, search Pinterest and google for things like ‘library humor’ ‘library meme’ or ‘library Facebook’.

Get the word out!

Put a sign at the circulation desk or at patron computers telling them to like you on Facebook.

You can’t like what you don’t know is there!

When using signs, be sure to instruct them on how to find you. ‘Like Carlisle Public Library on Facebook!’

Just… Be cool.

Be the library other libraries want to be.

And keep your posts relevant. Fonzie is hilarious here (ayyyyy) because we’re talking about being cool.

But younger audiences might not know about The Fonz.

So instead you’d use something like the guy from the Old Spice commercial (hilariously cool) or Johnny Depp (all around cool-guy).
