DONOR STORY: AL HUBBARDAl Hubbard spent most of his formative years in foster homes in the early 1900s. In 1939, Al arrived in Escondido with Mildred, his bride, and began working menial jobs.

Over time, and with hard work, Al was able to acquire various businesses in Escondido.

Good fortune shined on the Hubbards and they accumulated a significant estate. One regret Al had was not getting an education. It was his decision to leave the major portion of his estate to provide college scholarships for the youth of Escondido and Valley Center who “could not go to college without my help.” His attitude was “I made my money in Escondido and want to leave it in Escondido.”

At $4.2 million, the Al and Mildred Hubbard Scholarship is now one of the largest scholarships at The San Diego Foundation. Since 2002, the Hubbard’s legacy has supported nearly 100 youth with their goal of pursuing their dream of higher education.
