DELTA KAPPA GAMMA,
CHI CHAPTER NEWSLETTER Editor: Anne Miller
OCTOBER, 2016 VOL. #9, ISSUE #1
A big Chi Chapter welcome
to our newest transfer
member,
Charity Welch!
How did this happen? Last I remember, I was saying “Yes” to being Eileen Little’s Newsletter
creator. Next I knew, I was in the second and first Vice President roles and now your President!
Thank you for this great honor.
You will notice that my biennium theme is “Enrichment”. I want us to focus on enriching our DKG
society, our Chi chapter and ourselves. I also want us to get to know each other better and will be
encouraging some social opportunities aside from our meetings. One way that we can spend
meaningful time together is in committee work. You will be contacted by a committee chair soon to
attend a first meeting. For those of you not on a committee, but want to be?? Please let me know!
You can best reach me at [email protected], or my cell 717.951-2720. Feel free to text. I
can’t wait to hear our new biennium song about “Getting to know all about you”…Tears may be
shed….such a sweet rendition that Kay, Carol and Joan created. Our state President makes a
donation to the Society when she gets emotional, so I may have to follow suit.
My President’s project will involve a Girl Scout council patch that is DKG related. It actually has
DKG embroidered on it. I attended International Convention in Nashville and was delighted to see
this partnership developing. The Girl Scouts from the Nashville area helped to retire the flags at the
closing of convention. A visual I will never forget. Several Chi sisters attended and you can find
their informative articles in this issue of our newsletter. Speaking of conventions. PA State
convention was held in June at Penn State. Please consider joining Chi sisters in the annual event.
Here you will find fantastic professional development opportunities, social events and state business
being conducted. Best of all is the camaraderie of sisters from across our great state. Check out the
photo of Lois and myself as she handed off the Presidency with a rose. Little did we know that we
had chosen the exact color dress for the evening!
I look forward to seeing you all at our first meeting, October 8th
where our Pennsylvania State
President, Tracey Dusch, will be sharing information related to activities from around the state.
Come out to hear her as she encourages us all to “Get aboard the DKG train”… Don’t be left on the
platform!
This is sure to be a great biennium of enrichment because of each of YOU,
Marj

From the International Conference
International Convention Chorus by Carol Heintzelman From July 5 thru July 9, Marj Paradise , Sue Fritz and Carol Heintzelman attended the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Convention in Nashville, where they joined the International Chorus. Over 100 women from the United States, Canada and one member from the Netherlands participated in the Chorus. The Chorus rehearsed for four hours over four days to learn three songs, as well as practicing the graces for the Celebration Luncheon and the Closing Banquet. All the hard work paid off, with members enthusiastically applauding the Chorus at the end of its’ “mini-concert” Saturday evening at the start of the Banquet.
Keynote and Featured Speakers By Sue Fritz Keynote and Featured Speakers are one of many avenues for being inspired and challenged at Conventions. The founder of thoughLEADERS, Mike Figlioulo, was the featured speaker on Wednesday July 6th at the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Convention in Nashville. Mike’s presentation was based on his book One Piece of Paper. He clearly impressed his audience as his book sold out at the Marketplace within 30 minutes. Mike defines effective leadership within the context of developing personal maxims for leading yourself, leading the thinking (organization), leading your people (as individuals), and leading a balanced life (between your work and personal lives). These maxims keep you centered and convey to others what matters to you. I was one of many sisters who did not have the good fortune to purchase this book but did avail myself of his second book, Lead Inside the Box. I read this book with the enthusiasm and speed of an engaging novel. Mike provides a multi-faceted evaluation protocol that is the basis for a problem solving template to improve performance. This approach is efficient, effective, and applicable to multiple settings. Consider adding Mike’s books to your reading list. A new book will be published soon.
Tennessee Night at the 2016 International Convention by Marlene Reynolds Nashville is an area well known for its contributions to the music world. The vicinity is rich in its musical heritage with the multitude of singers and songwriters that make their home there. It is a destination point for many more who wish to develop their music talents. Dave Cleveland, Wanda Vick Burchfield, Steve Brewster, Ron Hemby, Melodie Crittenden Kirkpatrick, and Blair Masters are names that had little meaning to me until I (and hundreds of others) attended an event at the Gaylord on July 5 hosted by our Tennessee DKG sisters. The above mentioned personalities are well known songwriters/performers in the music world. They entertained us with an absolutely outstanding musical evening. Little did I realize that these people had not only composed some well-known songs but had also performed with some of the biggest names in the recording industry. Their talents, beyond a doubt, did not disappoint. A great evening was enjoyed by all as evidenced by the singing along to remembered tunes, clapping of hands, toe tapping, and the displaying of various dance moves. Their encore of “That Old Time Rock and Roll” was a perfect ending to a perfect performance. Nashville music at its best. Thank you Tennessee DKG sisters for an evening of awesome music!

Projects Committee Update
By Amy Smith
Also, locally, we will be coming
along side of our Girl Scout
organization. Our State project,
“Little Free Library” has been
touched on through our donation to
DVS, but we are looking for ideas to
establish our own space.
As in years past, our International
projects continue in support of
Schools For Africa through our
resource giving and strive to find
new ways of connecting and
supporting our early career
educators.

Chi sisters our Projects Committee
is full speed ahead as we enter this
new biennium. Locally, we are
continuing our support of DVS.
DVS has expressed a need for
bookbags for all ages and sizes of
children. These are used as their
“welcome” bags. They also could
use more infant toys. The families
of DVS are really enjoying the
Whatif Monster! Deb has shared
that she is going to be speaking
about their Children's Program at
their state's annual conference in
November and the Whatif Monster
is going to be there and
demonstrated! They are so grateful
for those resources!
DVS needs: Bookbags for all ages and
sizes of children.

The term of office of the current Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, will expire at the end of 2016 and the successor will be chosen by a new and more transparent. For the first time, governments have been encouraged to present candidates and for the first time, of the nine candidates four are women. All of the candidates have had the opportunity to introduce themselves and their ideas to the Assembly members and other groups in a series of sessions at the UN and elsewhere. What an exciting time and we will keep you posted on the results.
Many DKG sisters around the globe are closely aware of the crisis facing refugees. In response to a February 2016 UN briefing to share the current status of refugees worldwide and look for ways to stop the need to leave and to settle those who have left plans were made to take more action. On September 19, 2016, a High Level Summit on Refugees and Migrants will be held to address the national, regional and global approach to this problem and to develop an action plan. Students from Syria and many other troubled areas including Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Central and South America are displaced and unsettled. As we continue to work with these students in our classrooms it will be helpful to be aware of the direction the UN is taking to find relief.

Sister Spotlight by Marj Paradise
Born in Harrisburg to a family including a sister who is 4 years younger and a brother who is 6 years younger, this Chi Sister joined us in 2014. She thanks Pat Jacobs for that. She went to Millersville State College for Elementary Education and also took some graduate classes at Penn State. She substituted until he son started kindergarten, and then taught at Ross Elementary School for 28 years! She taught 2nd, 3rd and a split 2/3 before settling back in 3rd grade! She has a son, Jeff Kenderdine, who is the CEO of YMCA. In addition, she gained a daughter-in-law who is a teacher and is blessed with two wonderful grandsons. One graduated from Pitt in May and started Grad school there for Physical Therapy. The other is a student at Manheim Township. What is her favorite food? Italian and all kinds of cheeses. She loves to travel to the beach and England, and hopes to do much more of it. (as a side note- she does a FANTASTIC job as co-chair of Ways and Means!!)… Hats off to Brenda Goddard!
This Chi Sister was born in Lancaster and attended Hempfield High School. She is the youngest of 4 having 1 sister and 2 brothers. She went to Penn State for a B.A. in Psychology and then on to Millersville for an M.Ed in Language and Literacy. Additional certifications are ESL and Reading Specialist. Initially, she taught preschool for 6 years when her children were young. Now, she has been teaching ESL for the last 9 years at E.R. Martin School. Since 2010, she has been a consultant for WIDA and the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) in Washington, DC. Here, she helps to write, develop and review test items for the nationwide ACCESS test that ESL students take annually in most U.S. states. Anything potato is her favorite food and to vacation, she prefers the Caribbean!! Her daughter is 14 and her son is 12. She also has 5 cats because she kept the whole litter that she rescued!!! This sister came into Chi in 2010. She ran her first 5K in April and plans to run a 10K in November….Wow….. Go Anne Miller!...and thank you for our fabulous Chi newsletter!!!

Members of Chi Chapter of DKG Society International, recently raised nearly $400 from member donations to purchase 50 copies of the book, Jonathan James and the What-If Monster, along with an accompanying plush version of the monster himself for the Domestic Violence Services of Lancaster County Children’s Reading Program.
Usborne Books, who published the book authored by Michelle Nelson-Schmidt, and manufactured the monster, matched the Chi Chapter donations. The book and plush toy will be part of welcome packets given to children in the emergency shelter. Aimed at children who may be experiencing uncertainty, the book encourages them to be courageous, confident and to try things – particularly new things. Marty Althouse, DVS volunteer says, “It’s really about the power of positive thinking on a child’s level.” Coming together to unpack the books and monsters at the shelter were (l-r) Deb Manning, DVS Children’s Program coordinator; Lindsey Albright, Usborne Books representative; Marty Althouse, DVS volunteer; Amy Smith, Chi Chapter's Project Chair; and Lois Brown, Chi Chapter President. (Taken from the summer 2016 DVS Newsletter)

Be alert for romance scammers who gather information from you to establish a connection and then use that connection to ask for money. She advised the following:
Be aware of your surroundings.
Ask for help if you feel something is wrong. Trust your instincts.
Avoid stairwells in buildings. Take the elevator.
Close your garage door immediately after driving into your garage.
Leave only the car key (not any keys to your home) when having your car serviced or parked by a valet service.
Don’t use Craig’s List due to the dangers of meeting with someone you do not know.
