TRANSCRIPT

On August 13th, our senior group gathered in the Fellowship Hall for a

delicious sharing of food and fellowship. Our visitors, Ray and Donna

Eustice, Gabe Robinson, Cassie Thomas, Pastor Rob Harris, and Charles and

Sharla Payne rounded our group to 63 attendees. Hostesses were Shirley

Brooks, Betty Ruth White and Sandy Kruse.

Joyce Statton reminded the group of the upcoming fundraisers: the lunch

fundraiser is on September 13th. Monies go toward a people mover. Dick Prince and Kathy

Sylvester, accompanied by Phyllis Nichols will present a musical program at our September

meeting. Flu shots will be in October.

Gerald gave a slide show on the group’s recent trip to Kansas City where they had a most

interesting tour of the Arabia Steamboat Museum. Sunk by a log snag on the Missouri River in

1856 and dug up in a corn field in 1988-89, the cargo was fully intact as the ship was due to

supply settlers in Nebraska. The supplies ranged from buttons and knives, hammer and nails,

leather boots and saddles, guns and china to perfume. They also toured the Bingham-Waggoner

mansion. Stopping in Alton, Illinois, they toured the town visiting statues of a martyred

Abolitionist and the tallest man in the world. They trained and bused to St. Louis where they

took a brief trip up the Mississippi, which was in flood stage.

Landon and Gerald have planned a full slate of upcoming events, so contact them if you are

interested in the following. The Jewel Box is featuring the musical “Chicago” on September

13th. The cost is $22 and we will leave right after the church luncheon. Upcoming shows at

OCCC are Texas Tenors on October 1st and Doc Severson on October 26th, Rhonda Vincent and

the Rage on January 22nd and the cost is $37 each. October 20-22 will be the fun trip to

Branson, and the trip is filled. The Senior Cabaret will be November 1st at 3 pm at Hillsdale

Bible College and the cost is $16. A Caribbean cruise is slated for January 30-November 7 with

stops in Costa Mayo, Cozumel and Cayman. Prices vary - single or double, interior or ocean side

from $1199 to $2459.

Invite friends to join us for pot luck luncheons every second Thursday and for group travels.

I wish to thank everyone who helped with, or attended our “What’s at Steak” din-

ner. The steaks were wonderful, the sides were plentiful and as always the desserts

were delicious. It was a tremendously successful evening.

Most everyone shared their thoughts and ideas on where we ‘Dream’ our church

ministries should be in 2025, where we can actually ‘Vision’ our church to be in 2020,

and what we see as our greatest ministry ‘Needs’ for the upcoming year.

We received many very positive reflections as well as some constructive concerns

as a result of our table conversations. Our Church Council Chair, Marilyn Gouldy is

currently in the process of compiling the information from our discussion sheets and

will soon have it for her, Adam and I to begin deciphering. We will then be able to

send this information to our Strategic Planning Team, who will share their findings

with the committee chairs. The Strategic Planning team will then make a complete

report of our findings to the entire congregation.

I truly believe that the greatest days for the Christian faith lie in front of us, just

beyond the horizon in God’s great promises for tomorrow. Moore First United Meth-

odist Church will continue to follow the legacy placed before us by staking its claim in

these great days by continuing to focus on Jesus as our Lord.

Jesus tells us that where there are two or three of us gathered together, that He

will be there with us. This means that at least once a week you have a divine appoint-

ment with Jesus right here in church. In Hebrews 10:23-25 Paul reminds the church

to have faith, persevere and continue to be in fellowship.

24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging

one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Paul says, 23 Let us

hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

I hope to see you in church every week. I especially encourage you to be in worship

on September 20 for National Back to Church Sunday as we meet Jesus in our midst

and hold unswervingly to the hope we profess in Jesus and seek to be the Good News

here in the Heart of Moore.

Blessings to each and all.

Pastor Rob.

In 2012, the average worship attendance of The Moment Worship was 45 people, and this

service made around a $55,000.00 impact on the mission and ministry of the church. In 2013,

the average attendance in The Moment Worship was 80 people, and there was an almost

$80,000.00 impact on the mission and ministry of the church. By 2014, we were celebrating an

average attendance of 118 people and there was a $100,000.00 impact on the mission and min-

istry of the church. For 2015, our attendance has seen services over 150 and we are on track to

make a $150,000.00 impact on the mission and ministry of the church! In total, from 2012

through August 2015 there have been 40 baptisms and 55 new members to our church

through this worship service.

We are continuing to pray over and cultivate our modern worship service as we grow, and

continue to look for ways to integrate all three worshiping congregations together. I am

pleased to report that four of our HomeGroups – our take on the Wesleyan class meeting or

band – include members of Heritage worship services. Our newest Sunday school class, On

Fire, is meeting in my office every Sunday and has people from all three worship services at-

tending. There are Stephen Ministers in all three services, caregiver, cancer, and grief support

attenders in all three services, participants in mission opportunities in all three services, and

I love our family meal – Soul Food – that pulls us all together every week, now with all the

regular fall offerings returning. Every Sunday morning, my greeting to the congregation is the

same: “At Moore 1st UMC we have three distinct services of worship, but we are one big family

of faith.”

As a Church, we stress the importance of inviting people to church. I agree – personal in-

vitations to participate in church are one of the most effective ways to begin reaching new peo-

ple for Christ. However, I would like to offer a supplement to the invitation, and that is the

recommendation. A really effective way to evangelize and to help serve God’s children by

growing God’s kingdom and sharing Christ’s love is to recommend what our church has to of-

fer in conversations during your week. It is less intimidating than inviting someone to church

– perhaps someone who has already said “No” to you before – and it opens the door to share

any number of vital ministries we offer.

Face-to-face, personal invitations and recommendations within conversations are an easy,

effective way to share your excitement about Moore 1st UMC and how it has already helped

you in your walk with Christ.

When recommendation becomes easy, the next step is to escort. Inviting someone to

church is great, but inviting to bring them yourself – pick them up (maybe even treat them to

lunch afterward) – is another easy, effective supplement to the invitation. One of the reasons

that The Moment Worship has tripled its attendance is people inviting, recommending,

and escorting. I think those are three things we can all commit to as we seek to serve God’s

children, grow God’s kingdom, and share Christ’s love.

Join us on Sunday, September 20th for a fun filled day of worship and community. We ask that

you invite friends that have stopped attending church, have never attended church, or are look-

ing for a church. Let’s show them what being a Christian community is all about! We will have

food trucks available in the parking lots following worship for everyone to enjoy! See more about

the available food trucks below!

Kona Ice is back again

this year with their one &

only Flavorwave! So you

know what that means?

You get to create your own

Kona. With 40% less sugar

than the average snow

cone, their shaved ice is

hard to beat!

Chick N Wangs will be at Moore 1st UMC for the first time!

Chick N Wangs can typically be seen at City of Moore events,

H&8th Night Market in Oklahoma City, and many many more

large events throughout the state of Oklahoma, and always

with a line of dedicated fans. With fresh ingredients, it is hard

to compare Chick N Wangs to any other chicken truck. Always

served fresh and hot, Chick N Wangs specializes in Chicken

“Wangs”, tenders, catfish, Italian sausage, loaded fries, and

fried okra and always making it difficult to not go back for

more. Head out to the Chick N Wangs truck after worship on

Sunday, September 20th to see what you have been missing!

The voices of summer 2015 were much like the

voice of Moses crying out, “Let my people go!’

but continued on with “out in the backyard!’ This

summer, we had the plague of the frogs in our

backyard. I am not exaggerating when I say that

everywhere you stepped, baby frogs were under-

foot. Today, I noticed how big some of those

frogs have become as they sat near the ponds edge.

It was amazing to me how well they adapt to the

colors of the world around them. Their hind legs

were on the rocks so that portion of their body was

brown. Their heads rested near lily pads so that

portion was green. The message to me had noth-

ing to do with biology, but how God came into the

world and became one of us. He didn't just hang

out with one of us but adapted his stories to each

group that He spoke to. When he sat with the fish-

ermen, the stories were about fishing, when he sat

with the shepherds, the stories were about sheep.

What ever environment He was in, He became a

part, he adapted.

We are not to be stuck in the church speaking only

churchinese, but to go out where the people are

and speak to them in terms they understand and

share His love.

J. R. Hughes, a junior at Oklahoma City University, was assigned to a student pastorate at

Moore Methodist Church in June of 1953. He was described as "one of the finest young men

this church has ever received." In addition to his energy, determination, and spirit, he was

talented in vocal and instrumental music. After serving in Moore for two years, he planned to

enter seminary at Perkins School of Theology at SMU in the fall of 1955. Shortly after his

service at Moore ended, he contracted viral pneumonia. He died in July of 1955. The entire

conference and the Moore community grieved over the loss of this fine young Christian man.

The Hughes Sunday School Class was named in his honor.

The Hughes Class members, individually and as a group, have kept alive the memory of

Rev. Hughes, not only by naming their class for him, but by their faithfulness to the church.

The membership ranged from thirty-six in the 1960s to a small group in more recent years.

Whether their numbers were large or small, they studied, served, and cared for one another.

For sixty years the Hughes Class provided examples of steadfastness and of belief in the

future. The last meeting of this class was earlier this summer. The Hughes Class will be

remembered as a class of faithful Methodists who served the church their presence, their gifts,

their service, and their witness.

Nora of Kingston was impacted by flood waters rising to a height of

three feet in her garage and a foot and a half in her home. Nora had lost

her husband only four months prior and receiving the volunteer help

“was a blessing from Heaven.”

Her home was flooded twice within a four week period of time and with

reports of it possibly happening a third time.

Volunteers working with the Oklahoma United Methodist Church

Disaster Response Ministry took up flooring as well as sheetrock and

insulation half way up the walls. There was a lot of waste and dirt that

washed through her home forcing her to live with her daughter a short

distance away.

Nora said that having this kind of help “makes you have a sense of wanting to give back,”

and she fully intends to do just that.

We need individuals and groups to volunteer for clean-up, renovation and

rebuilding. Whether it is for one day or a week, contact us today to volunteer!

To volunteer please call: 405-802-0904 Learn more at: okumc-dr.org/node/312

challenge of being foster parents and shower

foster children with Christian love, we will

begin a monthly night out. Adults wishing to

be a part of this ministry should come to an

informational meeting on Wednesday,

September 23rd at 6:15 pm.

It’s that time of year again! We have many

college students within the church that need to

be adopted for this school year. Come to the ta-

ble in the welcome center to be paired up with a

college student. We ask that you pray for them

and send them letters of encouragement to help

them get through the school year and to let

them know that their church family is thinking

about them.

What an ENORMOUS gift you have been to us.

Because of your support, donations, prayers, and giving,

we are experiencing a beautiful period of growth. When I

began as your part-time youth director 2 years ago there

were an average of 7-10 average youth at each meeting.

This time last year we were averaging 15, and now we are

averaging 27 while seeing 40 different youth each week.

WHAT A BLESSING! The Holy Spirit is moving in this

Agape Youth Group!! Many of our newcomers attend

other churches on Sunday mornings, but are new to the

world of "Youth Groups," so if you see a new young face, say hi!

On August 12th 30 of us travelled to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma to sort and

package food. We helped to prepare over 10,000 meals and weekend lunches for the children of

Oklahoma. A special thanks to HUGH GOULDY for taking his time to drive to People Mover

full of crazy youth and helping us at the Food Bank.

We will be starting offering Technology 101 again on Wednesday, September 9th from

6:15-7:30 in the youth room. Stop by Soul Food for a delicious dinner, then head over to the

Youth Room with your smart phone, tablet, or laptop and we will be there to offer help however

we can (OR! Just come say hi! We love getting to know you!) If you are in choir or bells, stop on

by whenever you are done, we will continue offering help until 7:30pm.

WE SINCERELY THANK YOU for your continual help, support & service!

Without you, we would not be where we are.

Because we are in such an exciting time of growth we are needing to change things up a bit.

Here are a few of the exciting changes coming up.

-We are now opening youth activities to 6th-12th graders. If your 6th grader is in LEAP or

Chime choir, we ask that they continue these activities and join us in our other meeting times.

-Every 1st & 4th Sundays we will be having our own Agape Youth Worship service in the

Sanctuary during our normal meeting times. After worship together we will separate in to 5

different small groups throughout the church. This will help to strengthen our relationships

with each other and with God, as well as provide time for deeper discussions.

-Technology 101 will now be offered on Wednesday evenings from 6:15-7:30pm in the Youth

Center. Grab dinner at Soul Food, then head over to the Youth Room for help and answers on

any of your technological questions you may have. We will continue offering help through 7:30

for those who are in choir or bells.

-Due to our growing number of attendance, we are in need of more ways to transport youth for

our various events. If you have your CDL license, or are willing to get one, and would be willing

to help transport some fantastic youth throughout the year, please let Aly Shahan know.

-Dinner Parters: In the past, our wonderful parents have graciously taken turns providing

dinner for us each Sunday night before we meet, but with our growth, feeding this many

growing disciples can become expensive for a single family. In an attempt to help encourage the

growth of our youth group, as well as fostering the relationships between youth members and

adult congregation members, we come to you for help.

We are looking for Sunday School classes to adopt 1 Sunday every quarter (or less if necessary)

to join together to provide and serve our youth dinner on Sunday evenings, and if possible, stay

and eat with us.

If you are interested in helping us on this journey, please contact Aly Shahan to pick an

available date.

Men are invited to join this 5-session study that examines the life of Samson—a strong man with

glaring weaknesses. By looking at Samson’s life, you’ll learn to defeat the demons that make

strong men weak and become who God made you to be—a man who knows how to fight for

what’s right. Find the strength to fight the battles you know you need to fight—the ones that

determine the state of your heart—the quality of your marriage, and the spiritual health of your

family. The battles that make you dependent on God as the source of your strength. The battles

that make you come alive.

Fight, will be facilitated by John Graves, Bruce Leibold, and Aaron McReynolds, on Wednesday

evenings from 6:00-7:30 pm, starting September 2. Study guides are $8

This 6-week study invites participants into an honest conversation about the Bible, beginning

with foundational questions such as “How and when was the Bible written?” “Who decided

which books made it into the scriptures and why?” “How literally must we read it?” “Is the

Bible ever wrong?”, etc. From there, participants will consider real questions people frequently

as that continue to divide Christians and denominations alike, including: Were Adam and Eve

real people? Why is God so violent in the Old Testament? Why would Paul command women

to “keep silent in the church”? Is Jesus the only way to salvation? And so much more!

This class will be facilitated by Amy Graves and Richelle Leibold on Tuesday mornings from

10 am—noon, beginning September 8. Books are available for purchase for $16; a limited

number are available to borrow.

Women of all ages are invited to join in a Bible study and discover the parallels of the

Tabernacle's building and your life as a chosen vessel of God. This study will take you on a

fascinating journey into why God would chose to live in a wilderness tabernacle, made by

human hands.

This study will be facilitated by Amy McReynolds on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:30,

beginning September 2. Study books are $20

In this study, participants will peel back the layers of history and show how very contemporary

and applicable the story of Esther is to our lives. If you’ve ever felt inadequate, threatened, or

pushed into situations that seemed overpowering, this study is for you. Just as it was tough being

a woman in Esther’s day, it’s tough today.

This week study will be facilitated by Ann Meyers on Friday mornings from 10am—noon,

beginning September 11. Orientation will be held August 28. Study books are $20

Our ‘Director of CSS and SSF’, (Creamer, Sug-

ar, Sweeteners and Sunday School Folders), Jan

Wilson, has taken a sabbatical. We are looking

for a ‘sweet’ person to fill our creamer and sugar

containers throughout the church weekly and

place the needed information inside the Sunday

School folders. If this person might be you, call

Richelle and set up training. Hours for this

ministry position are flexible.

On September 19, hundreds of families will

gather at the Moore Community Center to check

out the decorated big wheels from area busi-

nesses and churches. The children will race

them. While waiting, many tents with area in-

formation and free food are set up as well as

those gourmet food trucks come. It’s a great af-

ternoon! We host both a big wheel and a tent.

We will be giving out free drinks and invitations

to Back to Church Sunday. Would you be will-

ing to wear your church t-shirt and come hang

out with us? Help us to serve drinks, fetch ice,

and pass out cards? We need many smiling fac-

es! Call Richelle at 794-6671 to let her know we

can count on your face!

September starts us back to all circles meeting

monthly again and fall's evening General

Meeting – to support each other in Christian

love and feed our souls with the spirit of Je-

sus. Invite a friend and bring a salad to share.

Martha Davis will teach us about her

MissionU experience, what it means to be

“Created for Happiness.” As it is written in 1

John 4:16 "…God is love. Whoever lives in

love, lives in God, and God in him." I am excit-

ed that some of you have already shared this

love by bringing tissues and hand sanitizer to

support our teachers at Central. What a won-

derful way to reach out to our community.

Even the UMW bulletin board is back from

its summer break. Check it out for dates,

upcoming events, and registrations.

Starting Thursday September 24th,

Women’s Connection is a place where women of multiple generations starting at age 18 can

come together for an adult version of youth group. There will be a small devotional followed

by crafts. Our first night we will be bling-ing shirts so bring your school shirt, your favorite

team shirt or just your favorite t-shirt and come have fun with us.
