About GeoRox

Georox is an academic, professional and social society run by students within the Geological Engineering program at the University of British Columbia. We strive to provide opportunities that develop, engage and inspire our student members throughout their degree. This package presents a synopsis of our leading events, including the Alumni and Industry Dinner, Geological Engineering Competition (GEC) and Distinguished Lecture. The opportunities provided to our student members allow us to establish relationships with faculty, industry and other developing professionals.

Through the consideration of each individual’s passions and strengths, events are tailored to apply skills and challenge intellect. Focusing on building professionalism, our program seeks input from various groups and organizations to help us create a platform for success. These goals are highlighted throughout the document and are uniquely presented for each event.

Not only is Georox a professional and academic society, but a social networking tool as well. Many lasting friendships have stemmed from involvement in the opportunities provided by Georox, and we hope to create many more. Building a welcoming and safe environment allows students to flourish in their own individuality and build on social skills and communication. As a young professional, a social network of like-minded individuals with diverse specialized interests can go a long way.

Together with the unwavering support from our industry, Georox has been able to contribute to an unforgettable university experience for each of our student members. We are grateful for organizations who have contributed to Georox in the past, and are eager to expand our network in upcoming years. We welcome you to review the details of the events below, and believe your participation will provide an unparalleled difference in fostering excellence within the Geological Engineering program.

Message from the Director Message from the Co-Presidents

.As UBC and our Geological Engineering program celebrate their 100th anniversary, I would like to thank our friends and colleagues for their support in helping to make UBC Geological Engineering one of the top programs of its kind. Vancouver is a key international centre for the geotechnical, mining and energy resource sectors, and engaging industry helps to expose our 160+ students to the remarkable projects being carried out by local companies and the career opportunities that await

The 2015-16 school year is shaping up to be another fun-filled and educational one for GeoRox members with our incoming executive excited to get started! We will be hosting a wide range of traditional events and programs including the alumni dinner and field trips, but also newer events like the Geological Engineering Competition. This package provides the details and sponsorship needs for a number of our events that are presented throughout the year.

With such a wide variety of events hosted by our club, there are many opportunities for sponsorship at different levels. Our funding coordinators have worked hard to develop this package and we trust that you will find it helpful and informative. We look forward to working with you throughout the upcoming year.

Sincerely,

Jacob Nikl and Beatrice Collier-PandyaCo-Presidents, GeoRox

them when they graduate. GeoRox – the student club of the UBC Geological Engineering program - is one of the most active student clubs on campus and plays a pivotal role in enriching the student experience by organizing professional outreach events, such as the annual Alumni Dinner and Distinguished Geological Engineering Lecture, as well as design competitions and field trips where students can escape the classroom and be exposed to the working environment. It is for this reason that our program enthusiastically supports GeoRox in their activities, and we encourage and thank our industry colleagues for doing so as well.

Sincerely,

Prof. Erik Eberhardt, P.Eng.Director, UBC Geological Engineering

The main goal in GeoRox is to provide services and benefit our students during their studies here at UBC. Through our organization of educational, professional, and social events, we aim to engage our students outside of the classroom environment.

As the Geological Engineering program at UBC expands, the demand for our services grow each year with increase in the number of students. Though every effort is put into organizing quality events for the students, funding can be the limiting factor in giving a fair opportunity to each members of our society.

The industry’s kind and generous support has allowed GeoRox to give back to our students, and we hope your continued support will aid in personal and professional development of our students, and in producing quality Geological Engineering graduates.

If you are interested in going above and beyond what is offered in this package, GeoRox is happy to discuss custom benefits and recognition at higher sponsorship levels. Please feel free to contact us with your proposal. Donations are accepted and tax receipts are available for all donors. We are excited to work with you on making this year a tremendous success!

The annual Alumni & Industry Dinner is the largest event GeoRox hosts. Current students, faculty, alumni, along with industry are invited to a formal evening of presentation in recognizing the achievements of our members. This event allows for a great opportunity for students to engage with the insdustry and create connections at both professional and mentorship levels.

Industry support for previous dinners has allowed the event to grow and improve each year. As the Geological Engineering program expands with more students and alumni, your support in maintaining the quality of this event is much appreciated.

This year, UBC is celebrating its 100th anniversary since 1915. Along with the centennial celebration, we are excited to include a special component to the evening in dedication to the Geological Engineering department and the key members that have contributed to the growth of our community.

This year marks the third annual Geological Engineering Competition (GEC). The GEC allows teams comprised of students from all years of studies to apply their knowledge to a unique engineering problem. Teams are given 6 hours to develop a solution, and are given the opportunity to present their findings to a judging panel of experts and industry representatives.

The GEC is a great opportunity for students to showcase their creativity, display their problem solving ability, and apply their soft skills in presenting their ideas. The GEC also allows the students to utilize software programs outside of classrooms. Its unique team structure gives an opportunity for younger students to engage in all aspects of an engineering problem, while allowing upper year students to employ their project management skills.

Your support for GEC will greatly enhance the students’ experience in understanding what it is like to work on a real engineering project in a team.

Annually, GeoRox hosts an evening lecture open to students, faculty, alumni, and industry members. The evening focuses on a students’ topic of interest in which the honoured guest is invited to share their experiences and expertise.

Previous topics have included “Earthquake Induced Landslides” and “Failure and Post-Failure Analysis of Submarine Mass Movements”. This event is a great opportunity for the students and industry members alike to not only learn about an exciting topic within geological engineering, but also to meet and network with others in similar fields of work.

Grad Trip annually is planned by the graduating class of students. The trip consists of many educational opportunities including, industry site tours and geological exploration. It also allows the students to form connections with each other prior to graduating from UBC.

Though there are many great places around the world for our students to experience, the destination and many of the activities depend on the funding. As this is one of the last opportunities

Georox puts a large emphasis on field trips throughout the school year. This is because they provide students with a unique chance to learn about the industry outside of the classroom. Site visits/tours are the main focus of the trips and the past tours have included the Copper Mountain Mine, as well as the Big Silver Creek Hydroelectric Project in Aggasiz, B.C.

Aside from site visits, we pick certain points of interest to visit which in
