The Bath District

The Bath District (Abanotubani) of Tbilisi’s Old Town

The public bathhouses in Abanotubani district

Pastel colored houses and balconies of Tbilisi’s Old Town and the public bathhouses in Abanotubani district. Much of the Old Town has been restored under a scheme introduced by the Tbilisi government in 2009. Called “New Life for Old Tbilisi”, the scheme is restoring and rehabilitating Tbilisi’s historical districts and neighborhoods

the recently renovated Abanotubani area, famous for its Sulphur Baths and the square Moedani with its many restaurants

The style of the Old town is a mix of two influences, the tight winding streets of an Asian or Arabic town interwoven with European, classical Russian and Art Nouveau architecture

The houses in old town are mainly 19th century as much of the city was destroyed by the devastating Persian invasion of 1795

The Old Town is part of the Tbilisi Historic District and contains a number of officially designated monuments, churches, cobbled streets and picturesque pastel colored wooden houses with open, carved balconies. The mosque’s slender red-brick minaret is easy to spot from a distance. Located at the foot of Narikala fortress in Tbilisi’s oldest district, the Sunni mosque was built in the nineteenth century and interestingly not only features Islamic motifs but also Gothic. The Great Synagogue, also known as the Georgian Synagogue, was built from 1895 to 1903 in an eclectic style

Perhaps one of the most

distinctive pleasures of

its old-style balconies,

ancient churches, winding streets,

and charming shops
