GREGG STAFFORD & DR MICHAEL WHITE – Praying & Swaying At The Cross URCD315 1 CD £12.99 This album is a fine example of jazzmen from different cultures and countries integrating and proving that the spirit of authentic New Orleans music still survives. The key figures, both black New Orleanians, have done much to keep their native music in its original form on the map. Gregg Stafford and Michael White were in The Fairview Baptist Church Marching Band so spirituals and blues would come naturally to both of them. They represent the later generation of New Orleans musicians who grew up influenced by the revered veterans of Preservation Hall. ….you cannot afford to miss this fantastic recording. Marcel Joly, Just Jazz Magazine THE CRANE RIVER JAZZ BAND – ‘Live’ at The 100 Club 1976 URCD314 1 CD £12.99 A superb recording of this truly unique band, recorded ‘live’ at the 100 Club in December 1976. The all-star line-up is Ken Colyer cornet and vocal, Sonny Morris trumpet, John Goddard trombone, Monty Sunshine clarinet, John RT Davies alto and baritone sax and trombone, Ray Smith piano, Ben Marshall banjo, Julian Davies string bass and Colin Bowden drums. (Formerly released as DJCD004). ZUTTY SINGLETON – Icon of New Orleans Drumming URCD311D 2 CDs £14.99 This double CD is produced by Mike Pointon and collated by Trevor Richards, a pupil of Zutty Singleton and features the soundtrack to STORMY WEATHER – Moppin’ and Boppin’. Taken from rare tracks from 1924 to 1969 this unique compilation is a valuable collectors’ item. Never before has there been such a first rate release featuring this exceptional drummer who was the heartbeat of Jazz 1924-1969. So many iconic bands are featured here – Fate Marable’s Society Syncopators, Charles Creath’s Jazz-O-Maniacs - as well as the many different better-known bands of Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong, Pee Wee Russell, Sidney Bechet, Wilbur De Paris and many more. GEORGE WEBB’S DIXIELANDERS – The Pioneers of British Traditional Jazz 1945-1948 URCD313 1 CD £12.99 By the early 1940s there was a revival of interest in early jazz encouraged by the Rhythm Club movement in England. But many of the avid collectors of records were also inspired to play the music they loved. The first group to emerge in 1943 was led by pianist George Webb, who recruited such fellow semi- professionals as Wally Fawkes and Eddie Harvey to become leading figures on the British jazz scene. This CD of George Webb’s Dixielanders, the first to be released of this important band for many years, includes leading recordings made during their short-lived but influential and sometimes controversial ‘fifteen minutes of fame’ . At the heart of this album are rare airshots made for overseas listeners and not heard since they were made in 1946 with the Dixielanders on top form. There is also a previously unreleased extract from a farewell concert made when the band was joined by a young Humphrey Lyttelton, long before he became a legendary musician and broadcaster. This welcome album gives a valuable glimpse into the development of post-war jazz in Britain. NEW! NEW! MUGGSY SPANIER – Extreme Rarities & The Juke Box Sessions + Bonus Tracks URCD310 1 CD £12.99 Rare and quite wonderful Muggsy Spanier – the title says it all! This wonderful CD introduces us to Muggsy Spanier playing with his band during a period between 1954 to 1956, just shortly before he joined forces with Earl Hines and co at the Hanover Club.- Pete Lay, Just Jazz. This is a very worthwhile CD and a valuable addition to what we know - and can now hear - of the great Muggsy.
