Among the central topics that have to be discussed prior to departure is the support in applying for a visa, the search for an appropriate accommodation and health insurance, as well as with respect to the family the childcare and school attendance. Also Dr. Zulia Gubaydullina from the faculty of economic sciences appreciates the work of the Welcome Centre: ‘the support was very big - they helped us with things which we didn´t even know would come up to us.’

After having arrived, most of the researchers visit the Welcome Centre for a first meeting. Formalities are prepared, such as the application for the residence title or the opening of a bank account. Furthermore, in case of interest and demand, an adequate German language course is selected. ‘The support and the hearty reception at the University of Göttingen by the seminar of German Philology and the Welcome Centre facilitated my start in the nice university town of Göttingen. Also during my stay I could always go to the Welcome Centre where all my questi-ons were answered patiently by the cooperative staff members so that I never felt alone’, says Dr. Galina Shapovalova from Russia. During the entire stay the scientists can contact the Welcome Centre at any time, also in confidential matters. In case of more complex problems, such as tax matters or complementary insurance, the Welcome Centre arranges a meeting with English-speaking experts.

The close network of the Welcome Centre with internal university institutions such as the Lectorate for German as a foreign language or the cooperation with external partners such as the city of Göttingen is necessary for the comprehensive and service-oriented support of the researchers. Only through good cooperation and service-oriented support, a successful and comfortable stay in Göttingen can be realised.

An additional field of expertise of the Welcome Centre is the Dual Career Service (DCS) which provides support in fin-ding suitable employment for spouses of newly appointed professors.

Under the management of the Vice President for Research and International Affairs, Prof. Dr. Casper-Hehne, Göttingen International is currently working on the further development of the university’s international strategy. The goal is to finalize this process by early 2011 and is accompanied by the participation of an external audit coordinated by the German Rectors Conference HRK. The Audit-team consists of HRK-members as well as external and internationally well known experts in the fields of university development, internationalization and quality assurance (Prof. Dr. Hans-Dieter Daniel, ETH Zürich; Prof. Dr. Sijbolt J. Noorda, President of the Association of Universities in the Netherlands and Prof. Dr. Ulrich Teichler, INCHER Kassel). In Göttingen, a project group has been established consisting of members of the central administration, the faculties and students. The group has submitted a self-report as the basis for a workshop together with the audit team which took place in April. First feedbacks from the audit team have confirmed that preconditions are very good for the further success of the internationalization process, but have also pointed out challenges that need to be addressed. As a next step, the project group will carry on its evaluations and all faculties will be involved in the process of developing an overall international strategy for the university. The measures to be developed and implemented are expected to foster the internationalization process, also with respect to the upcoming, next round of the Excellence Initiative.

International Student Services

The new project “Integration and Diversity at Göttingen University” (InDiGU) has met with great interest from both German and foreign students. Approximately 100 students attended the first informational meeting and learned about options such as intercultural training and the possibilities for international engagement. There are already 70 students registered for the “International Certificate”. The goal of

InDiGU is to promote co-operation between foreign and German students and thus to take advantage of the diversity at University of Göttingen.

InDiGU offers two options for the “International Certificate.” Students who participate in the training course “i²MoVe,” in preparation for as well as follow-up to a study abroad experience or internship abroad, will receive the “Inter-national Certificate: Mobility.” After their return, they will have various possibilities to make use of their newly acquired intercultural abilities and experiences at Göttingen University: in addition to involvement in the inter-national academic study buddy or writing partnership programs, students can participate as co-trainers in intercultural workshops as well as cooperate in international student initiatives. They can also form a Career Tandems exchanging information about the application possibilities for their countries of origin and helping each other with searches for internships or employment.

The “International Certificate: Integration & Diversity” is intended for German students who do not plan to study abroad, as well as foreign students in Göttingen. After an intercultural training course, the students can participate in projects to aid with the integration of in-ternational students at Göttingen University. “All stu-dents who are interested in intercultural exchange will have the opportunity to take part in intercultural study and life on the Göttingen campus”, explains Project Co-ordinator Patrick Lajoie of the International Student Services.
