Arts and Sciences. As Chairperson, Goldstein was responsible for managing the budget and endowment, alumni engagement, fundraising, supervising faculty and staff, and providing a valuable educational experience to students. As Chairperson, Goldstein’s initiatives improved Department function, enhanced student recruiting, grew the faculty and support staff, improved research funding, improved diversity, and funded new initiatives to enhance the Department infrastructure. Among others, Goldstein’s major initiatives include:

Department function and management: engaged all faculty in a strategic planning initiative, producing a strategic plan for strengthening the Department of Geology in the future and addressing its most important research and teaching challenges in the context of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Strategic Plan; produced a “Bylaws” document; improved operation of office staff after a period of instability; increased total number of technicians in the Department from 1 to 6.

Undergraduate experience: implemented successful plan for the UKanTeach program; instituted recruiting program that increased number of undergraduate majors by 60%, from approximately 65 to 100; Department won university-wide recognition for teaching excellence by achieving finalist status for outstanding teaching.

Graduate student experience: instituted programs that increased number of graduate applicants by 150%; instituted programs that increased success rate of offers made to graduate applicants to 90%; total number of graduate students increased by more than 100%; increased number and diversity of field experiences for students; co-instituted minority graduate recruitment program which succeeded in diversifying the graduate population in the Department; graduate students received the most AAPG research grants out of all schools worldwide for three years in a row; graduate students received the most GSA research grants out of all schools worldwide for two years in a row.

Research: department experienced an increase in total research funding of 60%, from $5 million to $8 million; increased number of peer-reviewed papers published per year by 70%; increased average number of best paper award acknowledgements from an average of 2.2/year to 3.6/year; department achieved top-ten status on the KUCR research-engagement index; large number of specific research accomplishments.

Faculty: increased number of tenure-track faculty from 18 to 24; no tenure-track faculty were lost through failed promotions, competing offers, or decisions to leave; built new strength in geobiology; enhanced program in stratigraphy and sedimentology; enhanced program in tectonics; enhanced program in climate change; enhanced programs in geochemistry; developed highly competitive startup packages; all six major retention efforts from raids from other programs were successful; all promotion and tenure decisions were successful; increased exposure of sed/strat and paleo programs through hosting editorships of two major journals; through special initiatives to increase faculty salaries, faculty salaries (minus promotion bonuses) increased by 4.96 % per year during a time in which budget allocations for merit salary increases were only 3.3 % per year, representing a 50.3% increase in merit salary for faculty over what was normally allocated by the College.

Budget: special initiatives to increase graduate student support; base budget teaching assistant support increased from approximately $100K to $320K, resulting in an increase in number of TAs from 10 to 17, and an approximate 55%

increase in salary compensation for each TA; leveraged endowment funds to bring in approximately $100K-$400K yearly in additional state or KUCR funds to supplement budget; increased operating funds by 25% with addition of instructional technology budget line; managed a total yearly budget of $2.4 million in state funds, $18 million in endowment funds , and total faculty grants funds of $8 million; total of 104 employees at maximum.

Infrastructure: increased space available to faculty and students by approximately10,000 ft2; built 2,000 ft2 geophysics shop; remodeled approximately 6,000 square feet of teaching and research space; remodeled field station in Cañon City Colorado; worked with faculty to add or upgrade lab facilities (Laser probe ICP-MS, Stable Isotope Lab, ICP-OES, TIMS, Geophysics lab, Computer field mapping, Terrestrial LiDAR, Laser Raman Microprobe, Organic Geochemistry/biomarker lab, U/Th-He lab, Thin Section lab, Student Mac lab, and Student PC lab)

Fundraising and endowment: revitalized Geology Associates Advisory Board engagement; rebuilt expendable income in the Department’s endowment accounts; provided a $600K cash cushion for incoming chair; achieved multimillion-dollar commitments for new building from College and University; achieved number-one-priority status in College for fundraising for new building; instituted building fund; acquired multimillion-dollar commitments for private donations to building fund; acquired multimillion-dollar commitments for private donations to enhance field support; increased or instituted many other new programs of endowed support, including various scholarship funds, student support funds, and equipment funds; increased fundraising efforts and alumni engagement; through initiatives to increase alumni engagement and fundraising, increased number of yearly donors from 235 to high of 550, an increase of 134%.

Interactions across programs: improved interactions, shared equipment and facilities with Kansas Geological Survey; reached agreement with KGS on joint appointments and made one appointment; reached agreement with Biodiversity Institute on joint appointments and made two appointments; successfully integrated Geobiology program into Multidisciplinary Research Building

Industry: Instituted marketing program to expand interactions with industry resulting in more than doubling the number of companies interviewing KU Geology students; achieved top-tier status for KU among several major oil companies and independents; number of graduate students supported though industry funds to department tripled; number and dollar value of grants from industry increased greatly.

ADMINISTRATIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS ASSOCIATE DEAN

The Associate Dean for the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas reports to the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. As Associate Dean of this Division, leads a unit of up to 212 faculty members, consisting of the Departments of Chemistry, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Geography, Geology, Mathematics, Molecular Biosciences, and Physics and Astronomy, as well as programs in Undergraduate Biology, Computational Biology, and STEM Learning. The Division contributes up to 133,000 student-credit-hours per year to the University and has up to a $40 million budget. In addition, faculty and staff expend up to $34 million annually from research grants. The Division serves 2,664 undergraduate and graduate majors. Goldstein takes a leadership role in

implementing mechanisms for improving student learning and engagement in the sciences through the Course Transformation Initiative and Center for STEM Learning. Goldstein has implemented major interdisciplinary faculty hiring initiatives. Other initiatives concentrate on fundraising for, planning, and building major new research, teaching, and outreach facilities for the University. Among others, Goldstein’s major initiatives include:

Reform of teaching and learning in STEM: conceived of a program for transformation of STEM learning; wrote proposal to embed teaching post docs in departments; collaborated with Dean and Provost to establish funding; implemented program of embedding agents of course transformation in Departments with the goal of using evidence-based methods to promote student engagement and learning, and to train faculty to employ new approaches in their courses; successfully implemented in all departments in Division; spawned similar efforts in other divisions and schools; received national recognition for impact by Bay View Alliance and AAU; now moving to Phase II, which includes hiring faculty-equivalent discipline-specific pedagogy experts to sustain successEarth Energy and Environment Center: in collaboration with endowment leaders, Dean, and alumni, conceived of Earth Energy and Environment Center vision, which includes integration of the College and School of Engineering, energy and environment, students and research, and industry and academia; raised approximately $40 million from private donors and industry including the two largest donations ever to the College; leveraged those funds to partner with university to fund the rest of the $78.5 million project; managed the implementation of the design, budget, and construction of the project, which opened its doors in November of 2017Master plan for the sciences and new interdisciplinary facilities: co-led initiatives for strategic plan for improved facilities for the sciences; incorporated it into university master planning initiatives; in collaboration with Dean, capital projects, and Provost, developed plan to move project forward; collaborated on development of a public-private-partnership to fund $350 million Innovation Way/Central District development project; leadership team for implementation; new dorms, utility plant, parking, union, and $180 million integrated science building (ISB); ISB is an interdisciplinary teaching and research building that includes new chemistry teaching labs, engaged learning spaces, new core labs including a large clean room for nanoscience, microscopy and imaging, mass spectrometry, X-ray, NMR, integrated biomedical research and integrated materials science research, including Departments of Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy, and Molecular Biosciences, as well as School of Engineering and School of PharmacyInterdisciplinary foundation professors: in response to Provost’s foundation professor program to bring in 12 new world-class foundational hires university wide, successfully hired 4 interdisciplinary game-changer facultyDevelopment of interdisciplinary cluster hires: in collaboration with University strategic plan implementation, developed proposals for clusters of interdisciplinary faculty hires: Development of Therapeutic Proteins and Vaccines; Nanoscale Materials for the Future; Visualizing and Analyzing Big Data; Genomics - The Gateway for Basic and Applied Research at KU; Water Resources - Integrating Science, Technology, Culture, and Management; Enhancing Energy - Producing the Energy Resource, Solving Associated Challenges with Water, Understanding Public Perception; Nanoscience Applications to Energy; Climate Change; Molecules to Cures, Drug Discovery.

ADMINISTRATIVE ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS PROVOST’S SPECIAL ADVISOR ON CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT

As the Provost’s Special Advisor on Campus Development, Goldstein was responsible for advising the Provost and senior leadership on space, buildings, and all teaching and research facilities for the Lawrence campus. Responsible for management of the $78.5 million Earth Energy and Environment Center project and co-management of the $180 million Integrated Science Building project. This major interdisciplinary campus development breaks new ground in terms of funding model, integration, and management structure, and includes fundraising activities. The Special Advisor also plays a major role in directing an inclusive campus master planning process for the University of Kansas. Among others, Goldstein’s major initiatives included:

Led assessment of University infrastructure and facilities: in collaboration with all Deans of the University and Facilities Planning and Development. Plan prioritized critical needs and opportunities for new buildings, remodels, teaching space, equipment, and infrastructure. Deans and Provost were given a plan that developed clarity on planning and implementation of infrastructure and facility improvements

Advised Deans on fundraising: to help them implement attainable strategies for engaging donors and accomplishing fundraising goals. These strategies culminated in major initiatives for the School of Journalism, and Departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Developed strategy for implementation of student infrastructure fee: and its use to enhance teaching and student engagement spaces on campus, while focusing on a philosophy of engaged learning and integration

Led effort to study alcohol usage: on comparable campuses and studied best practices useful in updating the University of Kansas alcohol policy

Managed Earth Energy and Environment Center construction, move-in, and fundraising completion: Included developing and maintaining a guiding philosophy of integration, acquiring and managing $78.5 million budget in collaboration with Deans, Provost, KUEA, and donors. Bringing project in under budget and on time. Won Engineering News Record Higher Ed/Research Best Construction Project of the Year for the 17 midwestern states. Philosophy of integration featured in article in AAPG Explorer. Feature in American Oil and Gas Reporter. RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

1985 - present. University of Kansas. Goldstein’s research specialties include sequence stratigraphy of carbonates, diagenesis, and fluid-inclusion research. Current research focuses on the following: (1) sea-level, paleotopographic, oceanographic, and climate controls on depositional sequence architecture of the Spanish Miocene; (2) modeling reservoir-analog architecture in deep-water and shallow water carbonates; (3) predicting porosity in reservoirs from new conceptual models of carbonate diagenesis; (4) effect of hydrothermal fluids on carbonate and sandstone reservoir rocks; (5) origin and distribution of early and late dolomite; (6) new fluid inclusion techniques for constraining thermal evolution of sedimentary systems; and (7) new fluid inclusion techniques for evaluating history of fluid composition. Currently, he and his students are working on a variety of projects dealing with upstream fossil fuel energy supply including both conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources.
