appropriate measures for redesigning of slope of highembankment in the section.

Accordingly, RDSO team inspected the problematicsite and collected the soil samples for testing in GELab. Based on soil test results and observationsrecorded from site, Consultancy report No.RDSO/2010/GE:CR-0144 has been prepared and isunder finalization.

Project titled as "Soil Nailing for Stabilization of SteepSlopes near Railway Tracks" was taken with IIT/Kanpurunder Rail Technology Cell.

A Presentation on the above project for RDSO officialswas made by IIT/Kanpur.

Project titled as "Reinforced Earth Design ofEmbankment and Cuts in Railways" was jointly taken upwith IIT/Kanpur under Rail Technology Cell. IIT/Kanpurhas already submitted the final report to RDSO.

The presentation on the above project for RDSOofficials was made by IIT/Kanpur.

ACase Study of Sub-Soil failure of railway embankmenthas been covers the soft soil whose un-drained shearstrength is less than 25 kpa. The success ofembankment construction on soft ground rests onproper planning, design, and construction methodologyand site supervision. However, this is usually easier saidthan done and therefore there are still repeatedgeotechnical failures of embankment constructed onsoft ground. The main factor of failure is poor bearingcapacity of subsoil and method of constructionemployed.

This paper presents the case history of all the three suchembankment failures which were investigated bygeotechnical engineering directorate in past. The cause

of failure, proposed remedial works and lesson learnthave been widely discussed.

A one day course on Reinforce Earth wall was organizedin RDSO by M/s Terre Armee, Sustainable Technology,New Delhi.

The course was useful & informative in understandingthat how the reinforced earth wall is constructed andhow it behaves using various technologies involved inits fabrication. Design aspects were also discussedduring the course.

All the officers and staff were present during the courseand the course waswell appreciated byall.

RDSO official conducted a field workshop on qualitycontrol test on earthwork for new 3rd line between Sakti-Jharedi, Jetha-Sakti and Champa-Baradwar stations onHowrah-Nagpur main line, Bilaspur Division, South EastCentral Railway. The field workshop was attended byofficers and supervisors of Construction departmentincluding engineers/supervisors from agencies involvedin construction of earthwork. The field compaction testsfor earth (soil and blanket) were also demonstrated atsite.

A Presentation was made by representative of M/sStrata Geosystems (India) Pvt. Ltd, Mumbai regardingvarious technologies adopted for soil stabilization suchas geosynthetics, geomembranes, geocells andgeogrids etc. The presentation has been found usefulfor Railway Engineers.

organized in RDSO by M/s Terre Armee SustainableTechnology, New Delhi.

The presentation was informative and subservient inunderstanding the mechanism of reinforced earth wallfollowed by its post behaviour under varioustechnologies involved in it fabrication/construction.

All the officers and staff were present during thepresentation and presentation was well appreciated byall present.

A presentation on "Geosynthetics Solution in RailroadSystem" was organized in RDSO by M/s CheckmateGeosynthetics, Canada.

The presentation was useful & informative inunderstanding the various types of geosyntheticproducts used in rail road system.

All the officers and staff were present during thepresentation and presentation was well appreciated byall present.

M/s India Polyroads Private Limited, Gurgaon made apresentation on "Use of Soil Tech-III for stabilization ofsoil layer in formation" in RDSO.

The presentation was useful & informative inunderstanding that how the stabilization of base andsub-base layers of roads can be done using Soil TechMK-III Polymer. The presentation was attended by allthe officers and staff and was well appreciated too.

A presentation on "Soil Stabilization Technology- NewApproach to Indian Railway" was given byrepresentative of Otto Visen Technologies, Germany inRDSO.

The presentation was useful & informative inunderstanding that how the stabilization of base and

sub-base layers of roads can be done using lime.

Presentation was attended by all the officers and staffand was well appreciated.

During 2010-11, total of 105 soil samples werecollected from various sites of different railwaysand 1323 soil parameters were determined.

Eight consultancies were rendered to different ZonalRailways suggesting the best possible remedialmeasures for rehabilitation of weak formation during2010-11. The list of consultancies has been given inAppendix-I.

Lectures were delivered by GE Officials on"Design of Formation including Bank Profile,Slope Stability Analysis and Provision of Berms,Des ign o f B lanke t i nc lud ing La tes tDevelopments" & "Design of Cutting Slopesincluding case studies" at IRICEN, Pune from12.04.2010 & 16.04.2010 for Special Course on"Railway Formation & Geo-tech Investigations"for JS/SS/JAG & SAGrade officers.

Training of officers & staff of Construction &Open-line organization in geotechnicalaspects is a major thrust area and thisdirectorate is organizing regular trainingcourses for them at RDSO/Lucknow. During2010-11, eleven courses were organized atRDSO for off icers & superv isors ofConstruction & Open-line organization ofZonal Railway. The courses have been wellappreciated by the participant.
