PYRAMID OF GIVING Use the diagram below as a diagnostic tool to analyze the patterns of giving in your congregation.

1. What percent of your church’s income comes from the top 10% of givers? 2. What percent of your church’s income comes from the next top 20% of givers? 3. Create a demographic profile of a typical top 10% giver in your congregation.

People’s giving response will often tell you something about the quality of your organization’s vision and the leader’s ability to cast that vision. The people can know the church’s vision only through the vision caster and how that person articulates and frames it.

CYCLE OF GIVING

Reflect on your organization. What are the key parts of the giving cycle that are particular strengths and what areas are true opportunities for growth? Take a few moments to identify the 2-3 actions in each area that could make the most impact for your congregation.

1. Who are the individuals that you should meet with in the next 7 to 10 days?

2. What are three key take-aways that you will share regarding your development cycle?

3. What additional information or data would help you to best assess your next steps?

SHARING THE GOOD NEWS “Rather than preaching a single sermon in which the subject of money and giving is forced or slanted to generate immediate results … give voice to all that the Bible has to say about money and giving.”

Bishop Craig A. Satterlee, Preaching and Stewardship2

Hebrew Bible:

1. Wealth as an occasion for idolatry - (Deut. 32:10-18; Isaiah 2:6-8; 3:16-24; Jer. 5:7; Ezek. 7:19-20; 16:15-22; Hos. 2:5-9; Amos 6:4-7) which is to say unfaithfulness to God and lack of reliance on God alone as our source of security.

2. Wealth as the fruit of injustice - (Isa. 3:24-25; 10:1-3; Mic. 6:10-12; Jer. 5:27-28; Amos 2:6; 4:1-2) critiquing those who accrue wealth dishonestly and exploitatively.

3. Wealth as a sign of faithfulness - (Lev. 26:3-10; Deut. 11:13-15; Isa. 54:11-12; 60:9-16; Jer. 33: 6-9). The same traditions that point to the apostasy and oppression of the poor by the rich also promise abundance as the consequence of fidelity to God and God’s covenant.

4. Wealth as the reward for hard labor - (Prov. 10-21). The Wisdom literature often contrasts hard work and rewards with laziness.

New Testament:

1. Wealth as a stumbling block - (Luke 18:18-30). The human impossibility of the rich entering God’s kingdom is stressed in all three Synoptic Gospels.

2. Wealth as a competing object of devotion - (Matt. 6:24; Luke 16:13; Matt. 6:19-21; Luke 12:31). When one is too attached to possessions, a choice is forced between God and mammon. Disciples are cautioned against greed and storing up treasures on earth.

3. Wealth as a resource for human needs - (Rom. 15:25-27; Gal. 6:5; James 2:15-16; Acts 2 and 4; 2 Cor. 9:13) The NT writers continually urge giving liberally to fellow Christians as well as to those outside the household of faith.

4. Wealth as a symptom of economic injustice - (Luke 1:51-53; 4:18-19; 6:21; 16:19-26; James 2:5; 4:1-2: 5:1-6)3
