    1. The General Taper Cold Glue Conversion Kitadapts to any model #1 or #2 Generalcorrugated taper. This does not include theGeneral Junior.

    2. Usually, machines equipped for taping onlyhave feed rolls that are solid for the full widthof the machine. If this is the case, or if themachine has never been modified to accept aglue system, you need to install split feedrolls before adding any glue system. Themachine must have split feed rolls in order toaccommodate a glue system (hot or cold). Youwill find a complete list of these parts andtheir numbers in the parts section of thismanual .

    3. You need a recommended minimum of 80 psi(6.5 bar) plant air supply. (Less than 1 cfm.)

    4. The adhesive should be a resin in the 1500 to2000 centipoise range.

    MOUNTING THE GLUE STATION

    1. Remove the stopper from the glue valve andreplace it with the applicator head.

    2. Partially unscrew "L" bolts and heightadjustment screws.

    3. Set alignment screws at a point where onlyone thread shows in casting channel.

    4. Place the glue station on the roller supportchannel. DO NOT CLAMP.

    5. Feed one board and stop it under the gluestation.

    6. Clamp the glue station and adjust the feedguides to center the applicator head on theglue tab.

    7. Clamp the stop block to the roller supportchannel flush against the stop point. This willmark the glue station for future reference.

    8. Adjust the height of the glue station so thatthe board makes good contact with theapplicator head. Tighten the height adjust-ment screws.

NOTE: Good board contact is important.

    9. Sight the edge of the fourth panel with thehorizontal plate of the glue station. Theyshould be parallel. If they are not, loosen "L"bolts and adjust the alignment screws. Whenthe fourth panel is parallel to the horizontalplate, tighten the locking nuts and re-tighten"L" bolts.

    10. Run a few boards and watch from the side. The boards should flow through the gluestation smoothly. If they do not, make thenecessary height or angle adjustments.

Please read the entireinstallation section beforebeginning the conversion.

    1. Alignment of the glue station is covered in theinstallation section.

    2. If the machine is equipped with hot melt, besure that the manual air control valve is in aposition to direct the air signal to the Valcoglue station.

    3. Set the master air filter/regulator at 80 psi(6.5 bar).

    4. To start, set the tank's air input pressure to 20psi (2.4 bar).

    5. Turn the glue shut-off valve to the OFF position(perpendicular to the flow) and disconnect itfrom the glue station at the quick disconnectfitting.

    6. Open this valve and bleed glue into a cleanbucket.

    7. Close valve, re-connect the glue line, then re-open the valve.

    8. Place a piece of scrap corrugated under theapplicator head and manually activate thefirst limit switch until glue flows freely fromthe applicator head.

    9. You are now ready to run. Set the limit switchesand feed the boards as you normally would. However, you should allow the fourth panel toride above the glue station. Achieve the correctglue quantity by adjusting the tank airregulator (not the master regulator).

    Installation

If the machine is equippedwith a taping mechanism,be sure to reduce the airpressure setting to theproper level before re-starting tape.

    10. A 10% solution of vinegar and water will helpneutralize the glue.

    11. The filter should be cleaned once a week.

a . De-pressurize the tank by removing thequick disconnect on the tank air input.

    b. Place a bucket under the glue filter.

    c. Remove the large plug from the bottom ofthe filter.

d . Remove the filter screen and wash it withwarm water.

    e . Re-install the filter screen.

    f. If the filter screen is exceptionally clogged, you may clean it with a propane torch.

    g. Purge any trapped air through the systembefore starting the system.

    1. Clamp the glue station to the roller supportchannel with the stop point flush against thechrome stop block.

    2. Remove the stoppers from the air and gluelines and connect to the lines on the gluestation.

    3. Open manual glue valve all the way.

NOTE: Do not use this valve for gluevolume control.

    4. Rotate manual air control valve to direct theair signal to the Valco glue station if applicable(for units with hot-melt only).

    5. The master air filter/regulator should remainset at 80 psi (6.5 bar). Adjust the tank airpressure regulator for a good glue flow.

    6. For any down time of over thirty minutes, theapplicator head should be removed from theglue station. This head should be flushed withwater and stored in a safe place. A stoppershould be placed in the glue valve output. Thiswill prevent glue from drying in the valve.

    7. When changing to tape, shut off the manualglue valve, disconnect air and glue lines at theglue station, and unclamp the glue stationfrom the machine. Replace the stoppers on theair signal line, the output of the manual gluevalve, and the glue input line to the gluestation.

    NOTE: Re-adjust air pressure.

    8. When changing to hot-melt, rotate the manualair control valve to direct the air signal to thehot-melt unit.

    9. If you use all of the stoppers correctly, andnever let the tank run dry, it should not benecessary to flush the system. However, flushing the system every six months to oneyear can be good preventive maintenance.

    Operation and maintenance

  • General Taper Conversion Kit

    Valco Cincinnati 1 9

The total fluid delivery system must be flushedfor the following reasons:

    • Changing adhesives, if formulas are notcompatible. *

    • System shut-down in excess of 30 days.

    • Excessive pressure drops due to glue linebuild-up.

    • Excessive filter screen maintenance due todirty adhesive.

For cold glue, a mild vinegar and water solution(one part vinegar to ten parts water) is recom-mended for cleaning the system. Water alone canbe used when simply changing adhesives or pre-paring the system for an extended period of down-time.

    * Always consult your adhesive supplier re-garding specific formula compatibility whenchanging adhesives.

    GENERAL

    • Check the air pressure setting to valves.

Inlet air pressure to the air-activated gluevalves should be 70-80 psi (5.8-6.5 bar).

NOTE: Maintain a minimum of 25 psi (2.7bar) of air pressure above the requiredglue pressure to open glue valve. Forexample, if glue pressure is set at 25psi (2.7 bar) on the tank, set the airpressure for the three-way solenoid at50 psi (4.5 bar). (Air pressure shouldbe a minimum of 50 psi/4.5 bar.)

    • Glue valve check

    1. Verify the correct control setting2. Verify the correct air pressure settings3. Verify glue flow4. Verify the output signal to the valve

    Trouble shooting

    • Check operating air pressure to glue pump (ortank).

    Model DD-1 diaphragm pump:80-100 psi (6.5-7.9 bar)

    2:1 ratio drum pump:80 psi (6.5 bar)

    5:1 ratio drum or wall-mount pump:40 psi (3.7 bar)

Pressurized glue tank:no more than 40 psi (3.7 bar)

    • Check glue flowApproximately 10-30 psi (1.7-3 bar) for direct-contact glue valves.

NOTE: This setting will vary slightly depend-ing on adhesive viscosity and indi-vidual pattern requirements.

    1. Turn off and remove the manual shut-offvalve from the glue valve.

    2. Place the shut-off valve over a bucket andmanually open to observe the glue flow. The flow from the valve should be an even, steady stream.

If the flow is not steady (spurts or spits),this indicates that air is in the glue line. All trapped air must be purged from theglue line before the system can operateproperly.

If the flow drops significantly, this indi-cates a blockage in the glue line. This iscommonly caused by dirty or clogged filterscreens at the pump, at the machine, orboth. Inspect, clean and replace if neces-sary.
