Michigan Midwest Tae Kwon Do Championships 2019

Dear Tae Kwon Do Athletes, Coaches, Referees and Families,
We are pleased to invite you to the 13th annual Michigan-Midwest Tae Kwon Do Championships being held on
Saturday, December 7, 2019.
We have opted to change our event from years past to provide Black Belt athletes with an opportunity to obtain points
for their ranking with USA Tae Kwon Do. While we are at a new venue with new competition guidelines, some things
have not changed. It is still our primary goal to provide high level competition for all competitors and a great overall
experience to go with it. We work hard to make sure each athlete and parent leave having had a great day.
As you will see in the packet, this is now a US 10.0 Sanctioned event. This means the registration process will be
different from past years but will allow Black Belt athletes the best opportunity to gain points. Registration will be via
the Hangastar system. For Michigan coaches, this is an event that brings National and International players and gives
your athletes the opportunity to have quality competition close to home without the expense of long-distance travel. We
pride ourselves in being able to provide high-level competition in the Michigan area to help those that want to further
their experience or prepare for National competition.
This is a SPARRING ONLY EVENT for Black Belts ages 10-32.
We are happy to announce that once again athletes can participate in the chance to win a $500 cash prize. Gold
medalists from the 12-14, 15-17 and 18-32 year old black belt sparring divisions will be able to place their name in a
raffle for the cash award. Gold medalists from the youth 10-11 year old division can enter to win a $100 gift card. You
don’t need to be present to win.
Thank you for your ongoing support of the Michigan-Midwest Tae Kwon Do Championships throughout the years. We
hope to finish 2019 with great competition and great experience for everyone!
Sincerely,
US 10.0 SANCTIONED EVENT

Why PARC?
Russell Gale and Tanya Panizzo are both residents of Plymouth
and care greatly about the ongoing development in its
community. Midwest Tae Kwon Do is within walking distance
to the downtown hub of Plymouth and the PARC. Over the last
13 years in Plymouth, Midwest TKD has embedded its
programs into many facets of the community from kids to senior
citizens. It is with great pride that we bring this event to this
facility and it is our goal to use as many of its in-house vendors
to support all things local. Though it is not a state-of-the-art
facility, we hope you will enjoy its history and proximity to
what downtown Plymouth has to offer. It is important to us that we involve as much of our community as possible when it
comes to bringing the highest quality competition to the area. As a small example of what you will see: Food for our
referees will be made and catered by The Simple Kitchen, an in-house business where both kids and adults are learning to
become chefs and business owners. Concessions will be via its mobile food carts with specialty coffee from Espresso
Elevado and treats and goodies made in the Proud Mitten Kitchen, another in-house business that offers aid in helping local
chefs grow their product, expand their market in stores and gain access to the Michigan food community. This is our way of
giving back to a community that has served us so well. Many of our Tae Kwon Do students participate in programs at
PARC.
PARC History: Plymouth High School was founded in 1877. The student size grew until the original building, donated by E.
J. Penniman, was too small. A new brick schoolhouse
was built on the site. This new building, completed at
$18,000 remained the community’s high school until
March 31, 1916, when fire consumed the old building.
Despite the fire, students continued to gain an
education. Temporary schools opened at the Knights of
the Pythias Hall, the Plymouth United Savings Bank
and many of our local churches. After a vote of the
community, the new Plymouth High School opened in
the late fall of 1917 for all grades at a cost of $100,000.
I was turned into Central Middle School until its’
closure in 2015. This building has seen rebirth as the
PARC recreation center and exemplifies what Russ and
Tanya value in all communities, which is maintaining
the integrity of history by repurposing space for new
generations to follow. Midwest Tae Kwon Do will be
proud not only to bring the event to the facility, but to
donate funds to its’ ongoing renovation.
After the fire in 1916. Plymouth Historical Museum
PARC is now a hub of activity for education, social and philanthropic groups as well as recreation. Many of our own Tae
Kwon Do students participate in its theater program, music programs and art classes. We also encourage you to visit the
Veterans Memorial that is on the front lawn of the PARC to learn more about the city’s history.
Good luck at the competition and enjoy downtown Plymouth and the PARC!
