Saxon Shore Early MusicKenardington launched in late 2015. We are bringing top class classical music performed authentically in one of the most appropriate buildings in East Kent, St Mary’s, which has been lovingly restored to its former glory. The opportunity to provide early music in such a wonderful setting does not happen very frequently, so we invite you to come to one of two remaining events this Spring. We aim to present music that, whilst not immediately recognisable to many, will guide you to the enjoyment that such special music provides. Each concert has been carefully created with this in mind and we hope that you will be able to support this venture to insure its long-term success for the future.

In order to gain the post of Organist at the Marienkirche in Lübeck, Diderik Buxtehude married the daughter of his predecessor, Franz Tunder. Bach walked three hundred miles from Arnstadt to hear Buxtehude play and overstayed there by three months. This programme presented by the mixed vocal and instrumental ensemble taking its name from the Dutch organist Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, opens the haunting sound world of Tunder, his pupil Buxtehude and of his pupil Bruhns, Buxtehude with such masterpieces as the Kladlied and the cantata Jubilate Domino for countertenor, viola da gamba and continuo. Abendmusiken were the series of evening concerts started by Buxtehude around 1673. Since being finalists in the York Early Music Network Competition, the Sweelinck Ensemble have established themselves as one of the most innovative period instruments ensembles in the UK. Their performances at St. Martins-in-the-Fields, St. James’, Piccadilly, the Brompton Oratory and the London Bach Festival, as well as broadcasts on BBC Radio 3, have been received to critical acclaim.

Transylvanian Kati Debretzeni, who has led the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and The English Baroque Soloists amongst others, joins harpsichordist James Johnstone, active as a continuo player with all of the major UK ensembles including his role as principal keyboardist with The Gabrieli Consort & Players.
