Chapter 5 entitled Karmasanyaasayoga or Yoga of Renunciation, describes the similarities & differences between Yogas of work & knowledge. The soul, though existing in the body, does not initiates any action, but enjoys the fruits of action through the sense organs, mind & intellect.

BHAGAVAD GITA – THE DIVINE SONG-An Introduction

Bhagavad Gita-Part of the Sanskrit Epic Mahabhaaratha.(200 BC to 200 AD)

700 verses in 18 chapters.

A conversation between Lord Krishna and his close friend Arjuna in the middle of the battlefield just before the start of the Kurukshetra battle.

Arjuna loses his heart and refuses to fight his teachers and relatives, and Krishna revives him by his wise words of wisdom.

Both renunciation & Karma Yoga (Yoga of Action) promote the supreme good. But of the two, Karma Yoga is superior to renunciation of work.

Arjuna, understand that one who does not desire anything or hates anything is a Renouncer. Such a person, free from all duality like pleasure/pain, heat/cold, good/bad, is easily liberated from worldly bondage.

(5.5)The status won by the Saamkhyas, liberation, is attained by the Yogins (those who, without seeking fruits of works, perform them as offering to God, as a means to winning knowledge) also. Only he perceives , who perceives this identity of goal of both Saamkhya & Yoga.

Arjuna, renunciation is indeed hard to win without (Karma) Yoga. With Yoga, the silent sage attains Brahman(knowledge of supreme reality) without much delay.

Reposing all work in Brahman, the Yogin operates without attachment; he is not stained by sin as a lotus leaf is not by water.

Giving up the fruits of work, the Yogin attains disciplined peace; the non-Yogin, attached to fruits of work by the force of cravings, gets bound to this world.

Bhagavad GitaNA KARTHRUTHWAM NA KARMAANI LOKASYA SRIJATHI PRABHUH, NA KARMAPHALA SAMYOGAM SWABHAAVASTHU PRAVARTHATHE’. (5.14)

The Lord creates neither agency (does not compel anybody to work) nor objects (of such work), nor contact with the fruits of work. It is the nature of things (Maaya) that operates.

Bhagavad GitaNAADATHE’ KASYACHIT PAPAM NA CHAIVA SUKRUTHAM VIBHUH, AJNAANE’NAAVRITHAM JNAANAM THE’NA MUHYANTHI JANTHAVAH. (5. 15) The mighty Being accepts nobody’s sin (of bad deeds) or merit (like, worship, sacrifice, gifts, & oblations in the fire ). Knowledge is shrouded in ignorance, hence, living beings are deluded, (& think otherwise).

Arjuna, sensual enjoyment born out of contacts with objects, indeed, leads to pain only. It has a beginning & an end. The sages do not delight in such enjoyments

The man who is strong enough to resist, in this life itself, the urge of lust & wrath, is integrated, & he remains happy.

Both when they are alive & dead, the peace of Brahman exists for the self-restrained ascetics, who have known the self, & are free from lust & wrath.
