AgendaWhy tune or optimize Windows 7?Understanding where these changes are and how they

are implementedWhere can I find all this stuff!

Does all this tuning “help”? (the user)Can prevent Windows services from killing server

resourcesMay show a slight improvement in the user’s

perceived performance (what the user ‘feels’)Will probably not improve your server density

(number of desktops per server) in any significant way

Preventative optimizations examplesOptimizations that keep standard Windows services

from killing VDI performance or allowing one VM to eat a significant portion of shared resrouces. Disable Window udpate Disabling the recycle bin… Setting event logs to 1MB and overwrite Setting the Windows Power State to VMs don’t sleep Disabling Windows Indexing/search Offline files and machine account password changes Setting temp clean up for OS and Applications (like IE)

Perceived Perf Improvement examplesThese are changes that may make the user session

“feel” snappier or quicker. They may do nothing for actual ‘performance’ Off-screen composition for IE Disable aero or custom backgrounds Hiding the action center pop-ups PCoIP tuning for frame rate and bandwidth available.

Scale/density improvement examplesThere are changes to the VM that MAY have an impact

on density of the server or storage (increase in VM capacity) Configure AV to ignore read-only volumes Disk defrag disabled Disable Last NTFS access time stamp Disable Index and searching Disable Superfetch Set memory assignment properly (avoiding paging)

Settings within the profile (file system) or Within the Registry (HKCU hive)
