General Instructions for Administering All Five Tests

    Uniformity of Test Procedures

To ensure that all GED examinees receive a fair and equal chance to pass theirtest(s), ALL of the instructions in this booklet MUST be followed.

Failure to administer the tests in the prescribed manner may invalidate an examineesresults.

    Verification of Examinees Identity

Examinees must be registered (have their name on the Signature Sheet) to be entitledto write the GED tests. NO WALK-IN EXAMINEES MAY BE ALLOWED

TO WRITE THE TESTS.It is essential that each examinee be properly identified before being allowed to writethe GED tests. Proper identification includes:

a valid drivers license, a valid passport, other identification cards (which have a photograph, signature, and

indicate the date of birth and residence) .

If examinees have none of the above documentation they should have contacted theGED Examiner at the college, prior to the test date, to identify other appropriatemeans of identification. Applicants who are scheduled to write should have receiveda confirmation letter from the GED office in Victoria.

If examinees have no identification at all, be sure to verify that their signaturematches the one on the copy of their application form that the Ministry enclosed with the test materials.

    Test Environment

Tests must be administered in accordance with the prescribed procedures and under

the best possible conditions in a quiet, well -lit room that is at a comfortabletemperature. Examinees should be provided with adequate writing surfaces andspaced in such a way as to prevent collaboration or copying. If possible, a wall clockshould be visible to all candidates writing the tests. The time remaining should beposted at the front of the room, or announced, every fifteen (15) minutes.

You should make every effort to put examinees at ease. Before tests begin, identifythe location of the restrooms and outline established rocedures for leavin the

testing area at the end of each test. Examinees may not leave th e testing areauntil they complete a test, nor leave the room with any test materials.

    Unforeseen Circumstances

In cases where unforeseen circumstances occur and the Invigilator feels that anindividual examinee is disrupting the testing environment and disturbing otherexaminees, the Invigilator does have the responsibility and authority to ask theoffending examinee to leave.

The incident should be documented and then reported to both the Examiner and Victoria, as soon as possible.

The examinee should be instructed to contact the GED Testing Service in the weekfollowing the testing session, in writing, regarding rescheduling his/her testing.

Procedures for Special Versions and Special Accommodations of Standard GED Test Administration

Special Versions are available to examinees who cannot write the English tests understandard conditions.

The tests can be written in French. Lar e Print Audio-cassette or Braille editions are also available.

Special accommodations can be made for examinees with learning and/or physicaldisabilities. Requests for special arrangements must be made with the Ministry andthe Examiner at the college. In such cases, you will receive special instructions andthe appropriate materials from the Examiner.

    Testing Times

Language Arts, Writing (Part I and II) 120 minutesLanguage Arts, Reading 65 minutesSocial Studies 70 minutesScience 80 minutesMathematics (Part I and II) 90 minutes

The prescribed time limits are sufficient to permit at least 85% of the GED examinees to complete the tests while working at a comfortable rate. Many requireless time and they may leave the room when finished, but they may not re-enter theroom or start a new test until the designated time.

Examinees taking the Braille and audio-cassette editions and some qualifying forspecial accommodations of the printed tests are permitted extra time. The Examiner

    4

at the college will notify you of any special circumstances or change in time limits forspecial examinees.

    Preparing for the Test Administration

    Supervision of Testing

Either you or the Examiner must be present and have total visual supervision at alltimes during the administration of the GED tests. You may not perform other

work, receive visitors, use the telephone, or permit interruptions to the testing exceptfor emergencies. Meal and rest breaks must not be allowed to compromise testsecurity. Plans must be made for supervision by an alternate Invigilator during anemergency. GED examinees may not be left without supervision during any

    part of the testing session.

    Procedures Prior to Test Administration

Prior to the Test Administration, remove the exact number only of test bookletsneeded for the testing session from the secure storage area and record the serialnumbers of these booklets. Booklets must not be left where examinees might haveaccess to them before the testin be ins.

You will receive a GED Test Log along with your materials from the Ministry. Thislog must be maintained for each session. (An example of the Test Log is in

Appendix A, on page 27 of this booklet). This is a safeguard against lost answersheets, booklets, or examinees who erroneously answer in the booklets. Pleaseensure that the following is filled in for each candidate writing:

    the names of the examinee,

the Test Form Code (2-letter Test Form Code on the top right-hand corner ofthe test booklet),

a space to indicate the Test Booklet Serial Number (the 5 -digit number on theto ri ht-hand corner on the cover of the test booklet ,

a space to check the return of the test booklet.

You may administer the test to a group of 20 or fewer examinees. For eachadditional 20 examinees, or fraction thereof, an additional Invigilator is required.

All Invigilators should be thoroughly familiar with the instructions in this documentand with the general instructions printed in each test booklet.

Before administering the GED tests the following procedures must be followed:

Verify each examinees identity by ensuring that they sign the SignatureSheet, and that you also sign in the space beside their signature. (Anexample of the Signature Sheet is in Appendix B, on page 28 of thisbooklet.) Examinees will not receive any marks unless their signaturea ears on the sheet to verif that the wrote the tests,

Arrange the testing room to minimize the opportunity to copy answers,

Prohibit talking in the test room,

Keep all used and unused test booklets in secure storage that isinaccessible to examinees,

Ensure that books, papers, and other personal effects of examinees arelaced under their chair before distributin the test booklets.

the entire envelope of test booklets but may only work in one booklet ata time,

a #2 pencil with attached eraser,

A ballpoint pen for the essay if they are writing Language Arts, Writing. To ensure that the multiple-choice questions are not answered in pen, which makes them unable to be scored, the pen should not be distributedto the examinees until after they have begun writing the multiple -choicesection of the Language Arts, Writing Test,

Answers to Some Commonly Asked Questions At the GED Testing Session

How long will it take to get my GED Test res

Your completed tests will be forwarded to the Ministry of Education to be marked. Approximately THREE to FOUR weeks after you write the tests, you will receivea statement of marks indicating your standard score for each test. Please note thatdue to the Freedom of Information Act, the Ministry cannot release any testscores or other ertinent test result information over the tele hone.

    How are the results reported?

Results on each of the five GED tests are reported as Standard Scores rangingfrom 200 to 800. A passing Standard Score for the GED program in BritishColumbia is 450. You MUST receive a score of at least 450 on EACH of the fivetests to be eligible to receive a British Columbia Secondary School EquivalencyCertificate. The Ministry does not calculate or report percentages or lettergrades

If you have earned a British Columbia Secondary School Equivalency Certificate, you will receive it at the same time as you receive your transcript of marks.

May I continue writing and not take any breaks?

No, it is in your best interest to take a break.

Having a break will allow you to rest, clear your mind, and be better prepared toconcentrate and start the next test afresh.

Also, allowing people to start and stop their tests at different times would bedisru tive to the entire rou , and therefore, it is not ermitted.

When I write my essay, how long should it be and should I double space? You will write an essay of approximately 250 words on a topic familiar to mostadults. The topic will be given to you at the start of the test and you will have 45minutes to write your essay. Please note that the directions for the essay state that acandidate must provide adequate information to respond to the topic, but does notspecify structure or length. If a candidate can respond to a topic in a few paragraphs,he/she will not be penalized.

    7

    8/38

A person with average-sized handwriting, that is single-spaced, should be able to fit250 words onto two pages of lined paper.

Do NOT double-space your essay. If you do, there will not be enough room to fit250 words.

Note: You must be successful on Parts I and II of the Language Arts, Writing testto receive a score (e.g., if you are unsuccessful on the essay portion in Part II, you

will not receive a Standard Score for the Language Arts, Writing test and will need torewrite both Part I and Part II).

    Should I print my essay?

No, but it is important to write legibly. If printing is the only way that you are ableto com lete our essa , make sure the ca ital letters are easil distin uishable.

What do I do if I need more space to complete my essay?

Ask me for a blank piece of paper. You may complete your essay on that. Be surethat you have both your complete name and Social Insurance Number on the

a er so it will not et lost.

Can I take the tests again?

If you do not meet the minimum Standard Score of 450 required to attain a BritishColumbia Secondary School Equivalency Certificate, you may rewrite at asubsequent testing session. If you are unsuccessful in achieving the passing StandardScore (450) the FIRST time, you may write aSECOND and THIRD time within the GEDtesting year (January - November). If you need to write a FOURTH time, youmust wait until the following GED testing y ear.

The scores reported on your new statement will be the HIGHEST scores that youachieved and not necessarily the scores from the most recent testing. Recent scoresare not reported if they are lower than your previous scores.

How do I register to rewrite my tests?

If you wish to rewrite the tests on which you were unsuccessful, you must submit anew completed application form and the appropriate rewrite fee. You can contactthe GED office in Victoria or your local regional college to find out what thec urrent fees are.

As an Invigilator, what do I do if someone makes an issue of leaving during a test to go to thebathroom?

Ask them if they can just wait a few minutes more. Quite often that may relievesome of the stress and they find they can wait. If it is during Language Arts, Writing

try to get them to wait until the break between the multiple-choice and essaysections.

If they insist on leaving, notify them in advance that their leaving will be noted. The Ministry will be informed and it may affect their results. If they do leave, pleaserecord their name, Social Insurance Number, what test they were writing, the timethey left and returned and any other relevant information.

same testing conditions. You may not use any notes, books, or scratch paper you have brought

    with you.

Please take out the different answer sheets included in your package. If youre a firsttime test

taker, youll use all answer sheets. If youre rewriting a particular test(s), your package will
