“genovent” Type RDA 21 Suitable for discharging slightly polluted air up to app. + 40 °C. (for max. temperatureof gas medium see “Technical Data”).

The rectangular casing, made of galvanised sheet steel, has two oppositemounted discharge outlets protected from the weather with an aerodynamicallyshaped grille, which provide for horizontally directed, swirl-free air discharge.

The centrifugal impeller, with backward-curved blades, is mounted on the rotor of a100 % variable-speed integral motor, the assembly being dynamically balanced tostandard G 2.5.

“genovent” Type RDA 31 Centrifugal roof units of this type are suitable for discharging more heavily pollutedair up to app. + 40 °C. (for max. temperature of gas medium see “Technical Data”).

The stylish sealed casing, made of corrosion resistant aluminium, has two oppositemounted vertical discharge outlets. The used air is discharged vertically at high speed,swirl-free, to well above roof level. The discharge outlets are protected from the weather upon fan shutdown by automaticbackdraught shutters, which prevent the entry of snow, rain or cold air.The base frame of galvanised sheet steel is suitable for fitting to an upstand, whichprojects well beyond the upstand in order to insulate it satisfactorily.

The casing is constructed so that individual external and internal parts, including theimpeller, can be removed, folded or swung aside, to allow easy replacement, inspection and maintenance.Special tools are not necessary for this work.

The high-performance, aerodynamically efficient centrifugal impeller, with backwardcurved blades, is mounted on the rotor of a 100 % variable speed integral motor. The motor-impeller assembly is dynamically balanced to G 2.5.

“genovent” Type RDM 31 The technical details of this fan type are substantially the same as Type RDA 31.However, the centrifugal impeller is driven by a standard motor placed out of theairstream, so that gas medium temperatures of up to max. + 120 °C are possible. The motor, of type B 5 protected to IP 54 standard, is adequately air-cooled via aseparate system.

The casing is higher than for Type RDA 31, to allow for the external motor.

“genovent” Type RDA 32 Technical specification as for the basic types RDA 31 and RDM 31.“genovent” Type RDM 32 The casing of both types is equipped with a sound absorbent lining in order to

reduce the discharge noise. The average silencing effect is in the order of 7 dB (see also “Noise”, page 8)

Advice on Installation genovent roof units are built for fitting to roof-mounted base stands. These should bemounted horizontally if at all possible. A slope angle of up to 25 ° is permissible, solong as the two discharges are mounted at right angles to the roof slope, i.e. at equalheight.

Motors Type RDA: Well tried and tested integral drive motors are used. The motors areprotected to IP 44 standard and have Class B insulation, including damp protection.Holes drilled in the rotor allow condensed moisture that may form in the motor to runoff.Noise-tested, maintenance-free deep-groove ball bearings give the motor long life.

To avoid overheating, every motor is equipped with termal contacts.Motors on Type RDA 21 fans have the termal contacts connected in series into themotor winding. They shut off the motor on reaching a set temperature, and restartautomatically when it has cooled off. Some single-phase a.c. motors on Type RDA 31 fans, up to 2.5 Amp Max. also havetermal contacts connected in series into the winding which shut off the motor onreaching a set temperature, and restart automatically when it has cooled off. Nospecial protection switch is needed. On all other motors, winding temperature is monitored by thermal contacts connectedto a motor protection unit or a realy.

Apart from a very few exceptions (marked with*) all non-geared versions of Type RDAfans have 100 % variable-speed control. The speed control is effected by matching the fan load with that of the current andmotor slip characteristic i.e. the fan speed adjusts until the motor torque is equal tothe impeller torque.

Type RDM: These fans are driven by standard flange mounted motors version B 5,protected to IP 54 standard, with Class B insulation. This series is available with 2speed and explosion proof motors. Motors with speed control are available onrequest, at extra cost.On standard motors without speed control, protection is effected on-site by installinga motor protection bimetallic switch.

Explosion-proofed Version This version of the roof unit follows VDMA Guideline 24 169, Part 1, “Explosion-proofing Measures in Construction” for the displacement of explosive gas mixtures inZones 1 and 2.

The motors are protected to the standard “increased Safety EExe II”, temperatureclasses T1 to T3, as defined by DIN EN 50014; VDE 0170/171.

Safety Guards All genovent roof units are supplied with a discharge-side mesh safety guard inaccordance with DIN EN 294.The inlet side is not fitted with a standard guard, because it is normal practice toattach other system parts to the side. However, if the unit is installed in such a way that accidental contact with the impelleris possible, an additional inlet guard can be supplied as an accessory.

Electrical Connection All roof units are supplied ready to connect.Beneath the casing lid is a clearly-labelled terminal box, which also contains theisolator switch. The roof fans of the line RDA 21- are supplied without isolator as a standard. Theisolator is available as an accessory to be ordered separately. On motors with a protection unit, the control circuit through the thermal contacts isinstantly bridged when the isolator is switched to off. Therefore the relevant relay inthe switching box is not cut out. When the work on the fan is completed it is necessary for this to be switched back on.

For technical reasons, explosion-proofed versions do not contain an isolator. For ease of connection, the terminals are supplied fitted with approx. 3 metres ofcable.

Types RDA 31–....–5D and RDA 31–....–7D contain a transformer, in a separate boxbeneath the casing lid, for alternative fan speeds. As well as the nominal current, 6 different alternative currents can be selected (seeperformance curves). The ex-works current selection for the fan speed is 200 V.On-site change to other alternative currents, and hence different fan speeds, is easilychanged.

Terminal wiring diagrams for the various genovent fan types can be found on pages –wiring diagrams. Their choice is explained in “Technical Data”.

Accessories A wide range of accessories are available for the fan inlet mounting onto the roof andcontrol of the motor drive (see also sections Sample Specifications, Accessories –Summary, and Accessories).

The performance curves were obtained using a Type B inlet side test chamber inaccordance with DIN 24 163, and BS 848 Part 1, (see diagram below).

To include the effect of the automatic shutters in the results, the roof unit wasmounted horizontally onto test chamber.

1 = Fan under test2 = Inlet chamber3 = Grille4 = Variable throttle5 = Auxiliary fan6 = Honeycomb straightener7 = Standard intake nozzle

The performance grids show the effective pressure increase ∆pfa (Pressure increaseobtained from the fan in free-field conditions) as a function of the flow volume V· .Reference gas density: 1 = 1.15 kg/m3

The performance curves are not valid for a constant fan speed, but for whichever fanspeed, allowing for slip, is reached by the asynchronous motor at a given duty point.

Torque and speed tolerances of the drive motor, and construction tolerances of thefan, may cause slight deviations from the catalogue performance curve.

“genovent” roof units are built to tolerances of Class 2 of DIN 24 166 “Fans, TechnicalSpecifications”.

Hence, the following deviations from the catalogue values are permitted:

Flow volume V· ± 5 %

Pressure increase ∆pfa ± 5 %

Absorbed power P + 8 %

With fan type RDA 32–…. one must allow for a volume flow decrease of between5 % and 10 %, because the internal resistance is higher than in the standard models.

Fan type RDM 32–… will give the same performance results as type RDM 31–….

Noise

Because conditions in the operating environment are usually far from ideal formeasurement and can vary greatly, computer-assisted data collection and evaluationensure highly repeatable accuracy in the tests. The noise level stated in theperformance curves is the A-weighted sound power level LWA, with equal values forthe inlet side (LWA3) and the discharge side (LWA8). Deviations from the cataloguevalue of up to + 4 dB are possible.

It is not possible to determine with certainty the stated A-weighted sound pressurelevel LPA at the different distances.

LPA ≈ LWA + ∆L

Under ideal conditions, with a clear hemisphere of sound propagation, curve “a” isvalid. However, curve “b” is recommended for practical estimates.

For more exact calculations when determining the required attenuation, the soundpower level in the octave bands is important.

LWokt = LWA + LWrel

The relative sound power levels for inlet and discharge sides, at various duty points, can be read from the table on the following page.

The discharge noise can be reduced with fan types RDA 32… and RDM 32… .These types include a sound-absorbing casing interior. The A-weighted soundpower level decreases by approximately 7 dB.Distributed over the octave spectrum, these are the average expected reductions:

1 = Air permeable sound screen2 = Microphones for envelope

measurement3 = Fan under test4 = Measuring duct5 = Microphone with attachment

for duct measurement6 = Sound-absorbing end cover7 = Variable throttle

Measurement and evaluation of noise levels are in accordance with DIN 45 635Part 38 (BS 848 Part 2).This standard defines several different sound power levels and methods for determiningthem. The following were used for the purpose of this catalogue.

Duct method – inlet sideThe duct measurement method is described in DIN EN 25 136.The sound power emanating from the roof unit into the inlet-side duct is measured. The test duct is fitted with a sound-absorbing end cover to avoid reflecting the soundwaves back into the duct.

The tubular microphone attachment is protected from turbulent pressure changes inthe airstream, to ensure that any effect on the microphone is insignificant.

Envelope method – discharge sideThe envelope method is described in DIN 45 635 Parts 1 and 38 (BS 848 Part 2).A cuboid envelope is assumed at a fixed distance surrounding the roof unit, withmeasuring points lying on its planes.Tolerance Class 2 requires that the test environment shall affect results by 2 dB orless. This requirement is achieved by a specially fitted sound screen developed by theFraunhofer Institute of Physics.

ILA Motor drive for discharge shutterThe drive for the discharge shutter consists of a geared motor, connected to theshutter by cables. Switching on the motor opens the shutter to its maximum extent,on motor shutdown it closes by means of a spring-loaded return. The motor can be operated in conjunction with or independent of the fan drive motor,so that ventilation by convection can occur even with the fan switched off.The shutter motor is short circuit proof. If the shutter is open and the armatureblocked, the current stays on.When using variable speed control, the shutter motor must be connected before thecontroller, so that this can always operate at the nominal current.

ZDR Inlet silencerThe tubular inlet silencer has a square flange on the side nearest to the roof unit, for bolting to the respective flat roof upstand. It slides inside the upstand, while theopposite end can take either additional ducting or an inlet cone.

The exterior skin is made of galvanised sheet steel, and the interior of galvanisedperforated plate, the cavity between them is filled with non-flammable acousticmaterial. There is no central core of material, so that any pressure loss will be insignificant.

ZKD Flanged inlet coneThe flanged inlet cone is for mounting under the inlet silencer, farthest from the unit,if no additional ducting is planned. This improves the intake flow environment and reduces losses.

Motor protection unit for three-phasecurrent motors (standard motors)without thermal contacts

DesignPlastic casing in protection class IP 55,permissible ambient temperature +40 °C, 40 – 60 Hz, frontal operation, for wall mounting.Motor protection unit for single-speed,non- variable speed three-phase currentmotors without thermal contacts.

FunctionThe motor protection units must beadjusted on site to the correspondingnominal motor current. In the preset nominal current isexceeded, the device disconnects themotor from the mains supply via athermal overload release.Pressing the “on key” causes the unit toturn on again.

All motor protection units EUM 33-…are also suitable for the protection ofEExe-motors (PTB-Prüfung Gesch-Nr.3.35/386.3060).They must however be mountedoutside of explosion endangered areas, since they are not themselves designedwith explosion protection.

Motor protection unit for motors withfitted thermal contacts

DesignBeautifully shaped, two-tone plastic ca-sing made of shock resistant polystyrol, protection class IP 54.All units are suitable for wall mountingand include: hand switches for frontaloperation, operational signal lamp andcontrol safety accessible from outside.Permissible ambient temperature:40 °C.

FunctionShould the motor winding temperaturerise excessively, the imbedded motorwinding thermalcontact will open thecontrol circuit, causing the mains relayto drop out and thus disconnect themotor from the mains supply. The motor will also be turned off in thecase of a mains-side dropout of thecontrol phase, as well as if the contactsfail or if the mains supply is interrupted. The motor protection units are notequipped with an automatic re-power-on after a mains voltage failure and arethus fail-safe.After the motor windings have cooleddown, a lock-out device in the relay cir-cuit prevents the motor from switchingitself on. The hand switch must first bemomentarily turned to the 0-positionand then back to the ‘on’ position. The operational signal lamp indicatesthe operation of the motor. It goes outin the case of a malfunction. The motor protection units are suitablefor group switching, i. e. several motorswith the same switching can be con-nected to a common switchingdevice. The sum of the motors’ rated powermay not exceed the maximal devicerated power. The thermal contacts of allmotors are to be switched in series.

DesignCompletely plastic casing in protectionclass IP 54, Type: ETH 31 and 35.Painted metal casing in protection classIP 23 from ETH 36-0040-8D and ETH36-0200-5E.All units are suitable for wall mountingand include; speed control via handswitch with 0-position and 5 switchingsteps, operating signal lamp, 230 V-output for e. g. a solenoid valve. An ILA(motor-activated shutter) can even beconnected.(It is activated when the turn switch isturned from position “0” to “1”).

Permissible ambient temperature:–25 °C to +40 °C.

ETH 31These units include no motor protectionunit. Protection switches for thermalcontact connections are to be laid in theconductor between the control deviceand the motor. In Gebhardt externally-mounted rotor motors, the thermalcontacts are already bound into themotor winding.

ETH 35-/ETH 36These units possess a motor protectioninstallation for thermal contactconnection with a supplementarywarning signal lamp, a potential-freeexchanger and a room thermostatconnection (remote on – off).

FunctionFor motors with built-in thermalcontacts, these open the controlcurrent circuit when the permissiblewinding temperature is exceeded. Thiscauses the main fuse to fall out anddisconnect the motor from the mains. After the motor winding has cooleddown (ca. 2 Min.) or after remedying thecause of the malfunction, respectively, turn the main switch temporarily to the0-position and then back to theoperational position.
