TOPEKA, Kan. (February 26, 2013 ) – On Feb. 26, 1944, 69 years ago, a group of sports car enthusiasts met at the Boston, Mass. home of Chapin Wallour to form a club dedicated to the preservation of sports cars. Today, the Sports Car Club ofAmerica annually boasts 60,000 members and hosts motorsports events around the country. While the vintage market was covered by existing car clubs focused on the “preservation of veteran motor cars, a worthy objective,” the seven founding members gathered that night with an eye on the then-current generation of sports cars. It was specifically identified in the minutes from that first meeting – the SCCA was to concentrate on cars made aſter 1914. First, though, the question arose – what was the definition of sports car? It was decided that evening to include “any quality car which was built primarily for sports motoring as opposed to mere transportation. In other words, any car which rates higher than average in construction and engineering, and which, preferably, has open body work.” The first meeting of the SCCA was a The Official Newsleer of the Susquehanna Region of the Sports Car Club of America, Inc. - Incorporated June 29, 1959 March 2013 Happy Birthday SCCA Gear Up! (See the Cover Story “Birthday...” on Page 4) It’s that time again. A new autocross season will begin in just two weeks. On Saturday, April 6th, Susquehanna Region will present its season opening Autocross #1, followed the next day, Sunday the 7th, with Autocross #2. These first two events will be held on the large lot between HersheyPark and Giant Center. Competitors are urged to pre-register at hp://www.MyAutoEvents.com as soon as possible and certainly before the April 4th, 8:00 pm registration deadline. Also, autocross chairs Geoff Craig and Kate Rier would like to invite competitors and region members to come out the mornings of those events to help with event setup. A lot of work goes into preparing the events before competitors can hit the course and assistance is always appreciated. Setup begins at 6:30 am, so get a caffeine jolt on the way in. q — By Reece White — By John Rudy
