    The Mayor's Office for People with Disabilities is offering free amplifiedtelephones through the Illinois Telecommunications Access Corporation.There are many types of hearing loss, which means that a phone that worksfor one person may not work for another. There are differences in tone andquality that need to be matched to your needs and the best way to do thisis to try the phones on a real call.MOPD has two selection centers where they can help you find the rightphone for your needs. They are open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondaythrough Friday and can be reached at (312) 744-7050 (voice) or(312) 744-4964 (TTY).The selection centers are located at 121 N.     Changes to Street Sweeping ScheduleStreet Sweeping season began on April 1st. It is important that residents move their cars on the day of their scheduled sweep to help keep the community clean. You may have read about the Mayor's proposed changes to the street sweeping schedule, which would have reduced the number of sweepers from 50 to 33 and would operate on a grid system rather than ward by ward.Mayor Daley offered a revised street sweeping plan that would maintain 40 sweepers and abandon the grid system.     Chicago Sign Permit Amnestyfor Ward BusinessesGenerally, there are two types of permits required for signage outside of a business. One permit is needed for the installation and another for the use of a public way.The Amnesty program is for existing businesses with existing signs, canopies,awnings, marquees, and banners that advertise the business at the business

    location and are currently not permitted. New businesses and businesses withpermitted signs are not eligible.If you apply for all the right permits during the amnesty period, you will have all of your fees waived for the first year and will avoid being fined in the futurefor not having the right permits.The Amnesty Period is from April 15th to October 15th, 2010.     Dawson Technical Institute HighwayConstruction CareersDawson has been awarded a grant under the Highway Construction CareersTraining Programs (HCCTP) to train people in the community.

    The proposed date to start the training is May 1, 2010 and anyone interestedin the program must have Illinois residency, have an Interest in highwayconstruction industry trades, be at least 18 years of age, be a female, minority, or disadvantaged individual (as referenced under Title 23,Part 230), havedependable child care arrangements if necessary.Plus possess a high school diploma or GED, have appropriate assessment scores, hold a valid Illinois driver's license, and consent to and pass aninitial drug screening test and potential random tests.For more information, call (773) 451-2030.

    GCA member and Author Toni Costonie will discuss the little known historyof slavery, maroon colonies, and free black towns in Illinois beginning in 1720.

    Costonie is a historian, writer, curator / archivist who traveled extensivelythrough Illinois and Missouri taking photographs and doing research for the book.Stanley Young, a contributor to Costonie's book, will present a lecture anddiscussion entitled Slave Trade Economics: Following the Money.

    Young is a community college administrator, Certified Pubic Accountant, andhistory buff.

    Scholarships for Students with ADHDStudents with ADHD often have a difficult time in school. Symptoms cancreate problems with not only paying attention in class but in retaining the information.Because of this, students with ADHD may not have the grades to receive academic scholarships and search for scholarships specifically designedto help students with ADHD. Scholarships for students with ADHD may bedifficult to find, but there are some out there.
