500 years of contemporary art in Nice

15TH AND 16TH CENTURIESGOTHIC TO RENAISSANCE STYLES

The primitive painters were artists from Nice, or those practising in the County of Nice. This movement marks the end of the Gothic style and the beginning of the Renaissance style, reaching its apex between 1480 and 1520. The term encompasses artists such as Durandi or the Bréa family. The Nice-born painter Jacques Durandi embellished his characters with an enigmatic smile. He had a profound influence on his contemporaries, and on Louis Bréa in particular. The latter was born in Nice and became one of the region’s avant-garde artists, deeply influencing his generation. Some of his works can be seen at the Cimiez monastery (Pieta, Crucifixion, Déposition de Croix).

Contemporary art has been central to life and culture in Nice since the very beginning. It courses through the city’s veins, each period embracing modern art as a given, with Nice now dotted with the souvenirs of this creative heritage.

Primitive artists had already left their mark and thus a legacy on the area, with Durandi, the Bréa family and the Van Loos a little while later. More recently, the early 20th century impressionists such as Matisse and Chagall as well as others all found a safe haven here in which to practice their art. The famous ‘Ecole de Nice’, encompassing several different movements, emerged as an inspiring and galvanising artistic phenomenon from the mid-20th century on.

Today, contemporary art continues to occupy a central place in Nice life. Artists’ studios, galleries, collectives and institutions are all open to the public. Most of those involved join BOTOX(S), an association designed to promote contemporary art, bringing stakeholders in Nice, and beyond its borders, together.

This non-exhaustive overview covers pictorial and fine art, yet architecture, music, writing, film and all other forms of expression all co-exist here in much the same way.

500 years of contemporary art in Nice

The Baroque style takes its roots in mid-16th century Italian art, and was propagated by the Roman Catholic Church. Baroque art lives on in the architecture of Nice’s old town. This area of the city is the epicentre of Baroque style with its tall buildings, narrow streets and deep, rich colours. A number of religious monuments perfectly encapsulate the movement: the Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur church, known as the Eglise du Gésu, the Sainte-Réparate cathedral and the Sainte-Rita chapel with its crown jewel, the Miséricorde chapel. In the heart of Nice’s old town is the Palais Lascaris. This early 17th century aristocratic residence is now a museum, home to one of Europe’s biggest collections of musical instruments. It is representative of the Genoese Baroque architectural style, yet nevertheless reflects a wide variety of other styles, too.

The neoclassical style emerged in late 17th-century Rome. A handful of religious buildings reflect this artistic movement in Nice. The end-of-century Chapelle du Saint-Sépulcre chapel is typical of the transition from the Baroque to the neoclassical, combining both styles in its architecture. The Notre-Dame-des-Grâces church, known as the Église du Vœu, is located on the Avenue Saint-Jean-Baptiste. Crowned with a white marble statue by Giovanni Parini, its façade was carved in the neoclassical style.

1850 – 1925 – THE BELLE ÉPOQUE STYLE

The Belle Époque period is generally defined as stretching from 1879 to 1914. In Nice, this period lasted longer than most, as remarkable buildings began to spring up, often termed ‘palais’, or ‘palaces’. The buildings’ angles mark the points at which streets intersect and are topped by domes. This is something of a local speciality. Buildings of this style hug the Promenade des Anglais, best exemplified by the most famous of them all, the Negresco, or the Villa Dilanski. The ‘Prom’ isn’t the only place to seek out Belle Époque gems. The Nice opera house was rebuilt in 1885 after a fire, and is another one of the most striking Belle Époque-era buildings. The Cimiez hill is also home to a handful of architectural wonders to be admired, such as the Excelsior Regina Palace, once a luxury hotel built in 1896 to accommodate Queen Victoria. Built in 1913, the Hôtel Boscolo Exedra Nice boasts a spectacular Belle Époque façade, as do so many more. It would be impossible to list them all, such as the follies inspired by buildings from around the world, giving rise to some truly original constructions, such as the Château de l’Anglais, the Alhambra hotel, etc.

1910 – 1930 – THE ART DÉCO STYLE

This architectural style is characterised by simple shapes, understated style and pared-back design (straight lines, geometric shapes). There are almost 4,000 Art Déco apartment blocks in Nice. Many can be found on the Promenade des Anglais : the Palais Bel Azur, the Palais Mecatti and the most renowned of them all, the façade of the Palais de la Méditerranée. Gloria Mansions is deemed Nice’s most beautiful Art Déco building, and is home to a quirky little curiosity: a glass mosaic. Finally, the Boulevard Gambetta and Rue Verdi are packed full of innumerable apartment blocks in this style. On the seafront, Nice’s monument to the fallen is widely considered to be one of France’s most remarkable. This Art Déco structure measures 32 metres high and was inaugurated in 1928.

1945 TO THE PRESENTCONTEMPORARY ART

Today, art flourishes in Nice as abundantly as ever. The art here takes several different forms. The works at the Chagall and Matisse museums are odes to the 20th century and also put on contemporary art exhibitions. The masters behind these pieces paved the way for the artists that were later to be collectively referred to as the ‘Ecole de Nice’: Klein, César, Arman, Niki de Saint Phalle and Ben all deplored consumerism in a style that was to leave a mark on mid-20th century art. Art in the city, a selection of urban works along the tram line, is a high quality initiative supported by artists such as Plensa, Othoniel and Kersalé. The Promenade du Paillon was designed by Péna, the library boasts the Tête Carrée sculpture by Sosno, and a plethora of art galleries and exhibition spaces line up to host art in all of its many forms in Nice. The Villa Arson is a 20th century heritage gem, an art centre and national art school, and a hot bed of up-and-coming talent.
