GAZI UNIVERSITY

Gazi University is one of the few universities whose history dates back to 1920s. Right after the declaration

of the Turkish Republic Mustafa Kemal Atatürk decided to establish an institute. This resulted in the

establishment of the 'Teacher Training Institute' in 1926. After that the institute had different names until 1982

when it was named Gazi University

Today Gazi University carries out its educational and research activities with its 18 faculties, 4 colleges, 9

Vocational High Schools, 35 research centers and 6 institutes and it still claims itself a high education institution

which is worthy to Atatürk. The university has faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Engineering and

Architecture, Economics and Administrative, Communation, Science and Arts, Law, Fine Arts and Education

which is currently considered to be the best in its field in the whole country.

In addition to the our Turkish students Gazi also provides education to more than 1500 students from all

over the world. Gazi University carries out its education in different campuses called Besevler, Emek and Maltepe

in Ankara.



GAZI UNIVERSITY PROJECT COORDINATION IMPLEMENTATION AND RESEARCH CENTER

Our Center getting into active on June, 2010 in our university, is established with a view to

perform 7th. Framework Programmes, Youth Programmes and Lifelong Learning( Leonardo da Vinci, Grundtving, Comenius), the execution and management of which have been realized by the State Planning Organization - Center for European Union Education and Youth Programmes- National Agency. The execution of international bid technical support is also realized by our center. Besides giving service to consultation and coordination in cooperation of academic and administrative unit of the university, it has also executed activities like a pre-interview for mutual agreement to be likely executed with representatives of university coming from Union European and other foreign countries and to represent the university in the meeting national/ international concerning this programmes. The activities our full-time and part-time employees are engaged with are as follows:

to promote EU Education and Youth Programmes at the university to represent the university national and international meetings, congresses, symposiums about

education to provide coordination and information about the teh different programs that EU executes

with the aim of support the scientific researches to contribute to the social life of the community through the meeting of volunteers from

different countries and cultural backgrounds to facilitate European and international mobility and exchange of ideas with a mutual

understanding and in a peacefull atmosphere to promote an educative project (local, national, European, international) by encouraging an

active citizenship for a democratic, united and participative society



EUROPEAN VOLUNTARY SERVICE (EVS) - HOSTING

Having a long historical background as a city Ankara is home of many architectural and historical findings in its museums. Ankara is considered as one of the most "serious" cities of Turkey, since it hosts the parliament and many politicians. This brings the mood of stable life into the city. However, by being the capital and having a huge student population Ankara has a very colorful night life as well.

Our volunteers live in a flat next to Gazi campus in a safe district in a very peaceful area. It is in the center of Ankara so it is easy to go everywhere by metro, by bus and also on foot. The volunteers share a big flat with 3 rooms, 1 living room, 1 kitchen, 1 bathroom and 1 toilet. The flat is well equipped, they have all the necessary things to live in comfort

Gazi mahallesi is a safe and peaceful area but also lively because it is the district in which different universities (Gazi University, Ankara University) are located. Most of the faculties of Gazi university are here. There is a big variety of places where you can spend your free time. Nice coffees, restaurants and green parks. Come and enjoy!

Turkish relics in Hungary

The türbe is also a religious building (octogonal, domed tomb chapel) raised above the grave of leaders of

high rank and that of the sultan. In Hungary there are only two examples of this type remaining (Pécs and

Buda).

Adrienn Toth – HUNGARY (EVS Volunteer)

The Turkish period (1526-1686) was architecturaly and culturally very enriching for Hungary. At the end of this period the population slightly increased. Due to the everyday- religious- and cultural life of the approx. 50-80 thousand Turkish people several new types of buildings were established in Hungary.

Among the buildings built at that time cami-s were the most significant ones. The nicest example for a special type (octogonal outside, round inside, domed) is the Cami of Gazi Kasim in Pécs.

Another type of cami is rectangular-based and covered with a pyramidal roof. The Süleyman cami in Szigetvár is of this type. The arhcitectural rank of a building was indicated by the number of minarets built next to it, for instance the Blue Mosque in Istambul has six minarets. In Hungary, the places of worship were built with one minaret, thanks to the reconstructions three of them can be seen now (in Eger, Pécs, and Érd).

Out of the secular buildings, the most important ones were the baths which incorporated both thermal-

baths built on natural springs and steambaths. Not only for ritual and hygienic importance, the baths also

played a significant role in the social life and provided a permanent source of revenue. Last but not least their

founders rised in popularity. The most diligent bath builder was Sokollu Mustafa with sixteen buildings (Rudas

and Császár baths in Budapest).

By the Turkish occupation of Hungary the silhouette of the settlements changed quickly. The restoration

after the reoccupation of the capital, Buda in 1868 was as fast as the change itself. During the rebuilding of

the cities from the end of the 17th century and the later intensive urban planning of the 19th century many of

the Turkish buildings disappeared. Fortunately even today many architectural memories can be seen in

Hungary.



Viennese Coffee House Culture

This story was believed to be the truth for centuries. In reality the first coffeehouse was opened by an Armenian spy named Deodato much earlier, but still Austrians only really started getting fond of coffee when it was combined with milk and sugar.

Something very distinguishing for Austria is its Coffee Culture. Especially Viennese Coffee Houses have a long tradition of not only being places to fulfil your desire for coffee but also to stimulate your mind. As one writer puts it: “A place which is not your home but not in the fresh air”.The legend says that it was actually the Turks who brought coffee to Austria.

During the first Turkish occupation in 1683 Georg Franz Kolschitzky managed, dressed up as a Turk, to cross the enemy’s lines and deliver a very important message to Karl von Lothringen.

For this heroic deed he was rewarded with some land, some certificates and a big part of the loot.Among other things the loot also contained huge bags of mysterious black beans which enabled Kolschitzky to establish the first coffeehouse in Vienna.

With time passing Coffeehouses became a meeting point for the high class, and by paying attention to some intricacies, one can still realise this today.

In Viennese Coffee Houses the employees are not called waiters but garcons, and also the glass of water which is always served next to your coffee has quite an interesting origin.

It roots not in the fact that coffee deprives you from water; it came into being because for nobleman and woman it would be inappropriate to lick the spoon and put it next to the cup. Therefore a glass of water was served so the spoon could discarded in an elegant way.

The height of Viennese Coffee House Culture can be dated between the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century.

These days coffeehouses were a meeting point for an intellectual, critical thinking and creative crowd, people were discussing, reading newspapers and also writing was very popular.

This is how a whole genre, Coffeehouse literature, came into being. It contains authors such as Arthur Schnitzler, Alfred Polgar, Friedrich Torberg und Egon Erwin Kisch.But also many artists, scientists and

politicians like Stefan Zweig, Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Adolf Loos, Theodor Herzl, Siegfried Marcus and also Leo Trotzki were often seen in these coffee houses.

To cite Stefan Zweig: “These coffeehouses are institutions of a very special nature and can not be compared to any other world. It is actually like a democratic club to which everybody can easily access by purchasing a cheap cup of coffee. A place where every visitor can sit, discuss, write, play cards, receive his post and consume an indefinite number of magazines and newspapers according to his or her personal preference. Every day we sat for hours, and we didn’t miss a thing.”

With T.V. conquering the world in the 1950’s the popularity of coffeehouses decreased.But up to this day some traditional coffee houses survived, and still it is very common to sit for hours and drink just one coffee. People go there to be alone and in peace, but they need companionship for that.

Just please one thing you shouldn’t do : ask for one coffee!

There is so many different types you would out yourself as an ignoramus if you wouldn’t make a specific choice. A Verlängerter for example, is an espresso which is made with the double amount of water, and probably most famous is the Melange, a Verlängerter in which the same amount of hot milk is added.

Small trip in Turkish folk music sting instruments world

Laura Buzinska – LATVIA (EVS Volunteer) One of motivations to come to Turkey with programme European Voluntary Service was to find out

more about Turkish traditional/folk music. In Latvia I used to play one Latvian folk instrument called kokle.

Before coming to Turkey my knowledge about Turkish traditional music was just basics. I have been heard that here string music instruments have usually 2 or 3 strings, what makes music sound different than used to my ear. But what is Turkish, Persian, Arabian, Indian, Syrian music instruments and where can lines be drawn to separate from each other- still makes confusion in my mind, but maybe there is no need to do it, because, if in some areas music instruments are similar, it shows that maybe there had been common history or culture between these places years ago. And why not to bring out common things instead of diferences?

First instrument what I met after coming to Ankara was santur (at that time I didn't know the name of it) one musician with long dreads, was playing it in the street of Kizilay, in Ankara. I was a bit surprised that it similar to one Latvian instrument. Santur has an origin from Persia not Turkey, about 2000 years ago, but the actual date isn't known. Santur is one of the variations of hummer dulcimer. It is similar to Indian santoor. In Batlic sea region it is known as cimbole. In China it is known as yangqin. It is aslo known in Central Europe (Austria -Hackbrett, France- tympanon), Scandinavia (Hakkerbrett) and Ireland (tiompan). When I went to Istanbul, I got the feeling, that santur is the most popular instrument there, which is played on the streets.

Other instrument with what I got in touch was saz. I had a walk throught Uchisar in Cappadocia, and

there I met one Turkish carpet shop owner who played saz. It is the most commonly used Turkish folk instrument. The other name of saz is bağlama. The word "saz" actually refers to a family of plucked string instruments, long necked lutes, which uses to play in Ottoman classical music. Similar instruments are also used in Kurdish music, Persian music, Afgan music, Assyrian music, and is some parts of Syria, Iraq, and also Balkan countries. According to region in Turkey it can be called in different names for example: Divan Sazı, Bozuk, Çöğür, Kopuz Irızva, Cura, Tambura. Saz has seven strings, lower one has 3 stings, and uppers to has two strings. One of the best saz players is Neset Ertas. In the 2nd of May Goethes institute in Ankara was organizing koncert YeniDem, where participated Erkan Oğur. Concert was like an example how saz can interact with modern technologies, and how the sound together with visual effect can be changed feeling in the room. I felt quite impressed after the concert.



When I was in Trabzon, I was introduced with an instrument called kemenche, small instrument, reminds a violin a bit, but is hold fifferently and has only 3 strings. It was played in Karadeniz university by a young student, who sat with his friends in picnic area. The most popular dance which is played by that instrument is Horon, officially a man dance. The other related instrument to kemenche is Kemane, which comes from Kappadocia.

One of most interesting instruments in Turkey is kanun/quanun. Kanun is known also in Persian, Armenian,

Greek music. Kanuns in Turkey used to have 26 courses of strings, with three stings per course. Now there is kanuns with 72 or 79 tones, It is played on the lap by plucking the strings with two special tortoise-shell picks, one in each hand, or by the fingernails.I play a bit one Latvian folk instrument kokle myself, and I thought that it would be really interesting and easier , to try to learn to play kanun than saz. But actually when I had my introduction lesson in kanun, I realized that there is much more details in playing techinque, than I imagined. My knowledge about Turkish folk instruments and folk music are and still just in the beginning, but it is interesting to find out more things, because there is so much to explore. Secrets and magic of Midsummer

In the longest day of the year young unmarried women were going to the fields and collecting herbs too. They were singing and making for themselves crowns using these collected herbs. In the evening these crowns were used for future telling.

Justina Petronyte – LITHUANIA (EVS Volunteer)

When I started my voluntary service in Gazi university, I was asked to give a list of religious holidays in my country to my mentor. I have been told, that in these days I would not have to work, and can separate time for peaceful celebration of events that are important for my culture. I have sent a list of Christian holidays and enjoyed my days off. But when the end of June came, I realised that I did not add something meaningful – Midsummer fest. The day after Midsummer night (24th of June) is public holiday in Lithuania, and it is in some sense it is a religious celebration. Religious – but not Christian. Celebration of longest day and shortest night, which comes from ancient pagan times.

Night from 23rd to 24th of June is the shortest night in the year. In Lithuania, which is far away to North from Turkey, this day sun sets down after 22:00, and before 4:00 in the morning it is rising again. In Lithuania, Midsummer fest has two names: Rasos and Jonines. Rasos (means dew in English) is original name for pagan fest. Name Jonines was given after bapticising the country. When one religion is being changed with another, it is difficult to force people to immediately reject their old traditions and beliefs, developed during thousands of years. Such important pagan fest like Rasos could not be deleted from people´s minds, so this fest was not denied, but a Christian name was given to it (Jonas is a Lithuanian version of name John) and some Christian elements and explanations were added to celebration. Well, Lithuania is the last country in Europe who accepted Christianity – it happened in the end of 14th century. And even after that lots of people secretly were practicing pagan religion and traditions, so they did not get forgotten. Because of that I am glad of being able to tell you some of these original and archaic traditions of ancient Lithuanians.

The time of year when day is the longest and night is the shortest seemed very special and ancient to people. In this time everything in the nature is growing, blossoming, spreading life and happiness. People believed this time was magic.

Day before Midsummer´s night elder wise women were collecting herbs in fields and forests, it was believed that herbs, collected during the longest day of the year have special powers. These herbs were used for preparing of healing teas, some of these herbs were put to houses for protecting house and family from evil.

It was believed that in the morning of longest day of the year dew has magic powers too. If cows eat grass with the dew, during the whole year they would be healthy and give a lot of milk. If farmers would collect some dew water and bring to their fields, they would have



a big harvest that year. Ill people were going to bath to the lakes and rivers, it was believed that magic water would help them get well.

In the evening of this day people were celebrating in order to thank Sun for warmth and life on this Earth; the Sun was also asked to continue shining. There were huge fireplaces built on the top of the highest hills. It was believed that the more fields would be reached by the light of these fireplaces, the bigger harvest would come in the autumn. Next to fireplaces people were building huge wooden pillars or gates and decorated them with herbs. All the people were coming next to fires, celebrating, singing and dancing. Young people were jumping over the fire. It was believed that the couple who would manage to jump over the fire together,

holding each others hands, would marry that year.

There was some more beliefs regarding marriage. For example, girls were putting their herbal crowns to the river or lake. If the crown was going with the stream far away from shore – girl would marry this year. If the crown was staying in one place, not moving, it was believed that the girl would not find love this year… In the evening girls were digging a little pit in their garden. After the night they were coming to that place and watching what would the first bug appearing in this pit look like. If that would be a grey bug – means, they would marry a poor man, if that would be a green bug – they would marry a farmer, if that would be a brown or colourful bug – their husband is supposed to be a soldier.

It was believed that in the shortest night of the night there is a magic flower blossoming in the forest. Person who would succeed to find this flower would know all the secrets of the world, hear thoughts of people, understand the language of birds and animals. This knowledge could bring to one

happiness and wealth. Young brave people were going to the forest to search for this flower. Why brave? Because it was believed that evil spirits and monsters are protecting this flower from all the human.

I like this fest a lot, it shows how strong was the relationship between people and nature. I love how much magic and secret was given to this day; people believed that the ambience, surrounding them always, was turning to something mysterious and different, it was even believed that sun is dancing in the morning… Each detail of nature was taken as something very important. I am happy that this fest is not forgotten, and we, city people of nowadays have a chance at least once in a year to stop for a while and turn back to the nature.



PROJECTS ;

HOSPITAL (2011-TR-21) Gazi University Foundation Hospital is situated in Ankara, in Yenimahalle and within 15 min. of

walking distance to the EVS flat.

In this hospital one floor is completely dedicated to the treatment of children, so in additionally to the normal treatment rooms there is also a very nice playroom and a little hospital school. Our volunteers will play a key role in those two rooms, in the playroom they will draw play and have fun with our youngest patients and they are more than welcome to contribute with their own ideas to create new activities for the kids. The hospital school is particularly important, especially for those kids who have to endure long-term stays due to serious illnesses, such as cancer.

Our volunteers will meet the explicit needs of the children giving them Mathematic, Science, Social and

especially English lessons according to their level of education. The hospital school is equipped with all the tools that will be needed and there are also two teachers who will support our volunteers in every possible way.Receiving this schooling will make it easier for those kids to find their way back into a normal daily routine after they have completed their treatment.

Also children will enjoy the contact with our foreign volunteers very much as it is a special opportunity for them to be in touch with the big wide world even though most of them are tied to their beds. Another activity in the hospital will be visiting the rooms and in this way not only adding new faces to the dull hospital every-day-life of the kids but also interact with the parents who usually spend just as much time inside those rooms.Cutting it short we want our volunteers to give our patients and their families motivation, make them smile and make them feel positive again.We are open to all new ideas, for example our last volunteers initiated a clown day. One day a week they come dressed up as clowns distribute balloons and joke around – the kids absolutely love it!

Who are we looking for? It would be very good if the applicant is studying or has graduated from any department of health, or has some practical experience concerning hospital work however it is not a must!



SCHOOL (2011-TR-22)

Gazi Foundation Primary school is located in Maltepe, 30 min by walk from EVS flat. EVS volunteers would have a chance to work with a wide age group of pupils – children from nursery school to high school students. Our volunteers would take part in foreign language lessons and patricipate in activities of students' clubs.

There is a wide variety of activities at school that volunteers can both participate in or can initiate and lead; first of all that would be assisting teachers during lessons of foreign language. Aim of this activity is to teach foreign language in a way which is interesting and makes fun for students. Despite of that, volunteers can iniciate and creative activities aimed to promote children's free expression in various art forms and cultural activities, for example: drama classes, music classes, cultural and educational outings, together with students volunteer can organise campaigns regarding healthy living, environmental issues, etc., plan and implement festivities and celebrations. Next to above mentioned cretive activities, our volunteers can take part in fulfilling various administrative tasks: parent contact, helping in fund raising activities, resource building, etc.

During their work at school, our volunteers would have an opportunity to learn about Turkish culture, learn and reflect about the work and educational activities and no movement- and health oriented lifestyle at Gazi school. Our volunteers also can use the chance to introduce their own countries history, culture even to teach their own language to students of Gazi school.

Who are we looking for?

In the selection of our volunteers, we would give our priority to persons studying or graduated from education faculties. The volunteer should be willing to work with children and teenagers and have empathy to them. From our volunteers we estimate fluent knowledge of English and basic knowledge of Turkish language; collaboration skills, ability to work in team; experience of work with children and youngsters would be an advantage.



KINDERGARDEN (2011-TR-23)

Our volunteers can choose from 3 different kindergardens initiated by Gazi University Education Faculty or Gazi University Foundation. All of them are situated in a place easy to reach in a nice, peaceful and green area. The environment is very friendly providing a big variety of possibilities for the children to spend enjoyable but also effective time. Plays, English workshops, movie minutes, excursions, outdoor activities, special events make the life of the children more colourful.

Our volunteers are working with different age groups in the kindergarden situated in Gazi campus. They take part in various activities which cover different topics, always trying to add an international flair. Through presentations, games, creative and leisure activities they try to promote their cultures, countries and languages and therefore increase the children’s knowledge. In exchange the volunteers can also easily discover Turkish culture and language. Supported by the kindergarden teachers they can get to know the educational system of Turkey and contribute with new learning methods. Our aim is to create awareness for different cultures and also show that there is things we all have got in common, in the majority of the cases using non-formal learning methods. We hope that by doing a good job our volunteers can be valuable members of the local community.



PROJECT OFFICE (2011-TR-24)

The projects related to Youth, Lifelong Learning and 7.Framework Programmes are written and managed in the office situated in Gazi University Campus. Each NewProject requires the information flow and labour. Gazi University offers a golden oppurtunity for young people who want to write their projects and to implement in their own countries and for you so long as you share the knowlegde gained with the sending organizations. Our volunteers will interest the writing, management and final report the 1.1,1.2,3.1,4.3 and 5.1 active in the field of youth and involve in the Project by establishing a dialogue with adult people in the brain team of the Grundtvig projects. The volunteers participating and making the projects will learn education and working activities, organize various celebrations and seminar and take part in Project team of the production of national and international projects. Besides, the volunteers will gain teamwok and ability to adjust and manage the organization.



YOUTH CLUB (2011-TR-18)

The volunteers involved in the Project will organize seminar, travel, meeting and festival with the student community at the Gazi University. They will organize information seminar in order to eliminate the cultural differences and to vaccine the European awareness. In this context, they will go to high and middle schools with the college students and young people will gain in this way the awareness of the European. Thanks to the Eurodesk Focal Points, the Office has a lot of possibilites like to bring together the Turkish National Agency experts and the volunteers, to deliver problems, and find the solutions in a short time. In this way, volunteers obtain the oppurtunities to benefit from the experiences of experts about writing project and to have adequate knowledge for projects when they return to their country. The volunteers will raise the recognition of EU by transmission of the EVS, Youth actions and the other European projects to the young generations.



YOUTH NGO (2011-TR-19)

As it is known, the most important strength of a society is the number and their owned facilities of NGO (non governmental organizations). We want to provide young people become conscious, develop dialogue with the society and and aware that they are individuals in the community. In this context, the volunteers involved in the Project will prepare flier working together with the NGO and take an active role in various festival, games and social projects. They will discuss the social problems of the young people in the study and prepare reports and brochures so as to find solutions. They will take part as a whole for all projects. Among the mains objectives will be to collect material during the studies, to interview with the young people and to raise the awareness by publishing magazines for them.



The applicant must be at least 18 years old. It is important for us that the potential volunteer is very positive, full of energy and ready to do things. He or she should be interested in sharing their culture and be ready to take the initiative. Additionally he or she should be able to work under pressure, be self-confident and ready to take on responsibilities. We are looking forward to hosting volunteers with a sense of humour to life!

Requirements ;

EVS volunteers will be supported by the Programme Coordinator and a Mentor in all their tasks. Their Mentor will have experience with the EU Youth in Action Programmes, have advanced English skills and insure that the volunteer is well lodged and happy. Additionally the Mentor will help with all administrative questions which might arise and accompany the volunteer to the hospital or to see a doctor if needed. During this project in generally, our volunteers have chance to discover Turkish culture from inside, being part of it, living and working in Turkey's capital city. They will learn Turkish language at the Turkish language Teaching Center of Gazi university, or get private lessons from an expert of Turkish language. Support for our Volunteers ;

Volunteers will work max. 30 hours per week and are entitled to have 2 free days per month, which can be – on agreement with the tutor – combined to create a longer period.

EUROPEAN VOLUNTARY SERVICE (EVS) - SENDING

GazıUniversity Project Coordination Implementation and Research Center have sent 420 volunteers to our partner’s organizations yet. We have 33 different partners in 14 countries. We are working with our partners about all Youth in Action Projects. Our aims are that improve to the quality of projects and make a good relationship with partners. When we select our volunteers for sending partner’s organizations, we can make an interview with them. We give information about our partners and collect their Europass CV’s and ML’s. When they are selected for projects , we invite and make a presentation about travelling and another important issues. Every deadline we can write new sending projects for our new partners.
