Shoreham Emergency Plan

All major emergencies are dealt with by the emergency services. However, there may be times such as power cuts, snow and ice, flooding or storms where the emergency services are not required. These conditions can make life challenging for more vulnerable people such as the elderly, infirm, disabled, sick or even someone who maybe heavily pregnant or with young children.

If you'd like to be on the list either permanently or temporarily, or you know someone who would, then please contact Sarah Moon, the Parish Clerk on 0791 2611048 or via email at [email protected] . If you are giving the details of another person please ensure you have their permission and agreement.

What are you waiting for? Waiting can be difficult, whether it be for love, trains, buildings or medical diagnoses. Yet it is something that we all have to do. Wendy Cope wrote a funny, short poem about buses (and men). It’s a bit rude, so not fitting for the Vicar to reproduce here but the jist of it is that you can wait and wait for a bus and then suddenly two will come along at once. I’ve had a similar experience waiting for a number of weeks for a Cardiology appointment, when after some chasing by the GP and myself, I finally got one (apparently I got lost in the midst of two hospital department reorganisations ) I then got three phone calls from different people all checking that I knew about the appointment. Not three appointments but three confirmations. We have been waiting for the building of a new Church extension, two small meeting rooms, a kitchen and toilets, for nearly 20 years but by the late summer we hope that it will be complete. Waiting is

difficult but it is only the beginning. When love comes it is the start of a new relationship, when the train arrives it is the start of our journey to the next destination, when the building is complete, it needs to be used and when the medical diagnosis comes, we deal with the implications. During Advent we waited for the birth of a baby, the Christ child. At Christmas we celebrated his birth, the waiting heralding the beginning of the next part of his story. Lo, Jesus came heralded by a star and so each year candles flicker and sweet carols rise. What an infinitely small view we take of this cosmic happening and spiritual intrusion! God came to earth. The Creator became a creature. The Prince of peace became a pauper; The Word of God a speechless child. King he was in heaven. Yet on earth a lowly vassal. The Source of all knowledge, thought the world was flat! The communicator of truth spoke Hebrew and Aramaic. God came to earth to lie howling in his mother’s arms and nuzzling at her breast. And yet, We sing sentimental carols of angel choirs and spotless shepherd boys and we wonder where Our God has gone? (Malcom Hughes) This year, do we dare to hope for a new beginning, a new trust, a new wisdom, a new love or will we leave the baby in the stable? What are you waiting for? Revd Diane

CHRISTMAS SERVICES

What an amazing time we had over Christmas: - The Nine Lessons and Carols with participation of a full orchestra and choir on 16th December raised the rafters of the Church with the singing of well-known carols by everyone. Christingle created its usual magic with parents and children filling the church on Christmas Eve. The story of the decorated oranges was explained and then 200 candles lit up the Church before being blown out. £482 was raised for the Children’s Society who created the idea of raising money through Christingle over 50 years ago. SHOREHAM CHURCH EXTENSION UPDATE

Building contract Building work ceased on 26th October because of the problems in obtaining the stone which has had to come from abroad. It is not clear who is to blame for the non-delivery with suppliers and architect blaming each other. Plinth stones were delivered a few days before Christmas with the builders returning to site both to take delivery of the stone and to progress the light well brickwork. The builders restarted work on 7th January. The bulk of the stone was delivered on 10th and 11th January. The attached photo taken on 16th January shows stone and brickwork for the external entrance to the extension. The critical issue at the time of the writing of this article is whether the laying of the stone and brickwork can be completed before the weather becomes too cold for this work.

Planning/Opening of entrances The Chief Planning Officer continues to take a personal interest. On 27th December Sevenoaks District Council gave two unconditional approvals both signed by him:

1. Details pursuant to condition 8 part discharge (programme of building recording) and

2. Details pursuant to condition 6ii (archaeological investigation and recording). In consequence there should now be no problem in proceeding (at the appropriate time when the extension is secure against the weather) with the opening up of the two entrances between the Church (nave and Lady Chapel) and the extension. The opening up of the Lady Chapel entrance pays for itself since it eliminates the need for an additional fire exit (with ancillary pathway) the cost of which is roughly equal to the cost of the opening up.

TIME AND AGAIN THEATRE COMPANY presents Greyhounds.

The year is 1941 and rehearsals for Henry V are underway. ‘Greyhounds’ entwines Shakespeare's famous story of ‘warlike Harry’ with the everyday trials and tribulations of small village life during the Second World War. Set in their local village hall, whilst the war rages above them, the residents of Shuttlefield struggle to stage a production of Henry V to raise money for their local Spitfire fund. You’ll find them rehearsing, gossiping and indulging in some seriously bad acting as the night of the performance draws ever closer. This piece of new writing was a hit at the Edinburgh Festival 2018 and combines Shakespeare with a touch of comedy and some truly vintage flair. Suitable for 10 years +. Tickets £10.00 (£8.00 16-yr-olds and under). Phone 523765 or 523979, email [email protected]

EXTRACT FROM CHURCH OF ENGLAND CHURCHYARD REGULATIONS

Tending graves The Churchyard has to be organised with an eye to the future when there may be nobody available to tend graves and memorial tablets. In time the graves will return to the ‘English Churchyard’ look – mown turf and headstones. The following stipulations apply:-. Stone and wood curbs are not installed. No gravel, slate chippings, large stones or paving to be laid on graves or

same restrictions as for the graves If graves or memorial tablets take on a neglected appearance it may become necessary to turf over the grave for which you will be charged. Please removing old wreaths and cut flowers and take them away from the churchyard or put in the garden waste bin by the gate. Shoreham Parochial Church Council

SHOREHAM HISTORICAL SOCIETY

At our January meeting Andrew Lewis, a representative of the National Trust, gave a talk about the legacy of Winston Churchill at Chartwell. He related the early beginnings of the house as a farm being later converted into an orphanage and eventually rebuilt as a house which Churchill bought in 1920, the house had been much neglected. He brought along various replica items given to Churchill.

The next meeting of the Society will be on 15th February when there will be an illustrated talk on the vessel the Medway Queen and the part she played during Dunkirk Operation Dynamo. Lynda Alleeson

SHOREHAM PARISH COUNCIL

Local council elections in May mean that some of the longer serving members of Shoreham Parish Council will be stepping down. We already have some vacancies on the Parish Council and once these existing members leave, there will be even more places to fill. If you think you may be interested in giving a few hours of your time each month to help shape the community in which you live, then you may be suited to becoming a councillor. Please contact the Clerk if you would like more information. Sunday 3rd February is the deadline for submitting comments for the final version of the Sevenoaks District Local Plan. The document includes sites for new homes and employment together with community infrastructure projects. It includes policies to protect the natural and historic environment as well as maintaining the Green Belt. We would encourage all residents to read the document and to submit comments, which will be sent to the Planning Inspectorate for consideration. To access the document, please visit https://www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/info/20069128/new_local_plan/412/proposed_submission_version_of_the_local_plan Finally, the Parish Council have for some time been considering installing a village sign in Shoreham to provide a focal point for the village. This would most likely be designed by a local artist (perhaps via a competition) and would depict several icons which best summarise the village. The location for such a sign has yet to be decided. Examples of similar signs can be seen in Eynsford, Otford, Halstead and many more nearby villages. Whilst several members of the Parish Council are in favour of this, several are not and there are other groups in the village who oppose the idea. We would therefore like to invite comments from the wider community as to what the general consensus would be for such a sign. Please contact the Clerk if you have any comments you would like to make on this proposal. Many thanks Sarah Moon Parish Clerk – 0787 9655459 [email protected]

ANOTHER VILLAGE SIGN The Shoreham Society and I have written to the Parish Council via the Clerk objecting to another village sign. We have one by the river that was commissioned by the parish council in 1920 - Do look as it says SHOREHAM KENT with WW1 and WW2 names at the bottom of it- There is a KCC sign on each road into the village and, with the one by the river and everyone using Sat Navs; we all know where we are for goodness sake!! I have always been guided by that wise lady Hazel Pollock who lived in Bridge House who said “No street furniture” and would pass this mantra on to others. Ann Ball

SHOREHAM VILLAGE STORES

As winter marches on the shop has some fruity ideas to brighten the gloom. The knobbly Seville oranges are back which are perfect for marmalade-making. If you prefer it already in a jar, Mrs Darlington’s Orange Marmalade sits alongside other jams and lemon curd from this award-winning company. Pick up recipe cards next to the side door for tips on how to use them in dishes like Spicy Tomato and Sticky Onion Chicken, or Raspberry and Lemon Curd Crumble Cake. This season’s batch of Almost Wild apple juice from Filston Lane is a particularly mellow blend from a bumper crop. Chocolates, cards and wine will, of course, be on hand for Valentine’s Day. NEWS FROM SHOREHAM VILLAGE SCHOOL Happy New Year to everyone from Shoreham Village School. Just before Christmas Moore Class and some of Cameron Class sang to the Over 60s in Shoreham Village Hall while they were enjoying their annual Christmas Dinner. The children sang beautifully were much admired for their behaviour and were a credit to the school. We were delighted by the size of the congregation and the number of local people who joined our Christmas Service in the Church, during which the children sang and spoke about ‘Christmas around the World’. This included a song that was taught to us by our new friends from Tanzania and was performed at other Christmas services by the Church choir and the children from St Michael’s School. Our Pupil Leadership Team has been very active this term, organising lunchtime clubs for all pupils as well as using money raised during our Christmas Bazaar to choose some exciting new playground equipment that will challenge all pupils physically and allow for more creative play. Recently, we hosted a School Councils event for all schools in our Sevenoaks Challenge Group which includes Dunton Green, Otford, Churchill, Kemsing, Sevenoaks and our school. The Heads and staff from these schools meet up regularly and our Pupil Leadership Team met up with other school councils and shared

information about how they were elected and what they have achieved so far. They then split up into groups, mixing up with children from all the other schools. They had to answer some questions about their school councils and work collaboratively to suggest projects that will inspire all pupils. Some very exciting ideas have been proposed by the children including making Lego models of our schools and painting school values onto rocks and placing them around the schools, encouraging pupils to actively model the values on a daily basis. If you have any time to spare on a regular basis and would like to offer your help in school please do contact us to discuss ways in which you could support our pupils learning. Prior to commencing any work with the school, volunteers will have a brief interview with me and will undergo a Disclosure Barring Service check which will be organised by the school and is free of charge. We are encouraging our pupils to develop a strong community spirit and we will be encouraging our eldest to consider ways in which they can support the local area. If you can suggest ways that our pupils can be further involved in the community, please contact us. We look forward to a fruitful and busy Spring Term Mrs Gillian Lovatt-Young, Headteacher

TALES FROM THE HILL

The old paper mill Shoreham 1926 by Vincent New Yes, I’m still clearing out my room, but now and again I get a pleasant surprise, this time it is a publication made jointly by the late Monty Parkin and the Shoreham Society in 1992 of drawings and prints by Vincent New. Vincent’s drawings of Shoreham and the surrounding countryside in the late twenties, are not just beautiful but show us how little Church Street and The High Street have changed in the last eighty years. I was, though, surprised by the number of buildings associated with the old paper mill. In a postscript Vincent says Samuel Palmer bought his sketching paper from the mill. A little fact that has been overlooked by the numerous biographers of Palmer. In a way this makes for a more rounded tangible link with Shoreham, for the river provided the power and the residents gave their linen that made the paper and our glorious countryside provided Palmer’s inspiration.

A snippet of news that we all must have noticed recently was that the kilogram as we know it will be no more. The lump of platinum-iridium stored under three domes of glass in Paris is not accurate enough as it is prone to put on weight! It was Louis XV1 who commissioned scientists to establish a standard physical lump of metal that the rest of the world should adopt, quite an achievement when you come to think of it. This metal cylinder was named Le Grand K .Apparently scientists felt that if aliens visit us and we say our unit of mass is based on a lump of metal in Paris we’ll be a laughing stock amongst the alien fraternity. So after one hundred and nine years Le Grand is to be replaced by Plank’s Constant, which I am told can be used to measure “unknown masses.” That means there will be no solid tangible lump of metal that nearly weighs a kilogram but a kind of mathematical formula.I suppose it was inevitable that scientists would have to ‘improve’ things, leaving Le Grand high and dry along with other units of weight such as the Troy, Dram, Nail, Clove, and Scruple, but a couple of old weight names survive in daily use- the Carat- and as many of us log burners know ‘The Cart Load’ Even this unit of weight has changed a little, it is now known as the ‘Transit Load.’ I can imagine a time when my GP will say “Oh dear Mr Bovington, you have put on 6(v’=2) +4y!! since I last saw you.” John Bovington

We were delighted to welcome Susanna Clerici, From Kent Wildlife Trust, to our AGM in November. Susanna replaced Dave Hutton (who has moved west to work for the Herefordshire Wildlife Trust), giving an interesting talk on Polhill Bank. The new committee elected includes joint chairmen, Chris Euman and John Saynor, Secretary, Vannessa Hills (assisted by Anne Crocker), Treasurer, Shirley Heath and membership secretary, Jenny Walkling, assisted by Sheila Birkin. Duck Race leads are Linda Lattimer and Sheila Webb and general committee members are Neil Vickers and Jane Hudson. Sarah Parkes is the parish council rep and Ann Ball continues as the WI rep. Fiona Macdonald is taking a break from the committee but is happy to offer general support. Our President (Nigel Britten) and vice presidents (John Bovington and William Alexander) continue to offer huge support. Shirley Heath is welcomed as a new committee member (and treasurer). Many of you will know her as Shirley Rye. Shirley was brought up in Shoreham; she was for many years part of the team at the Co-op in the High Street. Although she now lives in Sevenoaks, Shirley has remained involved in Shoreham activities.

We are monitoring a number of planning and conservation matters such as the sale of the Timberden Barns and we are working in collaboration with the parish council, scrutinising the coppicing and tree felling going on in Andrews, Meenfield and Pilots Wood and in requesting the SDC’s Woodland Management Plan. This is particularly important as there has been a longstanding commitment to protecting the village from M25 noise and pollution through a screen of trees and it is important that this continues. Our next village activity is the Clear Up (Make Shoreham Shine) morning on Sunday March 10th. Please save the date as we need as many volunteers as we can muster to help collect litter, shine signs and generally ‘clear up’ our village. High Viz jackets and refreshments provided. TEMENOS CHAMBER CHOIR

Miserere and Stabat Mater. Saturday 30th March at 7.30pm in St Mary’s Riverhead. Not to be missed. We are singing two settings of each of these amazing texts: Allegri’s much-loved, stratospheric Miserere with a new version by the wonderful James MacMillan, and an early Stabat Mater by Palestrina in eight parts with Scarlatti’s richly varied ten-part setting, one of the first works we ever performed as a choir. Tickets £12.50 (£6.00 students) from Sevenoaks Bookshop (personal callers only) or telephone 01732 452715. Kate Britten

AND FINALLY!!

One advantage of the Shoreham Village Facebook is the local information that pops up and when Mags Smith of Mildmay Place said that she had a 1949 copy of the Shoreham Parish Magazine, as it was then called, with her June 26th baptism in it. I had to go and have a look. This was 70 years ago when Mags and her family lived at 2, Cockerhurst Cottages, her parents are listed as Thomas and Lois Mollinson. The Vicar was Rev Paul Gliddon.

On September 4th Sir Herbert Cohen presented a banner to the Shoreham Branch of the British Legion which had been founded not so many months before. A grand procession marched through the village to the church for the dedication and presentation of the banner. Sir Herbert’s two sons died in WW2 Editor

Working chimneys should be swept at least once a year.

This will maintain your fire's efficiency and more importantly

reduce the likelihood of a chimney fire, which can result from a build

up of soot and creosote.
