Advanced tickets will soon be available from Client Services at Bishop Auckland College and can also be bought on the day. Kevin Burns, Bishop Auckland College’s Head of Marketing and School’s Liaison said “Ever since last year’s event people have been asking who will be headlining at this year’s event and we are delighted to announce it is the Wild Cats of Kilkenny and the fabulous Hoosiers. Everyone is looking forward to a rock ‘n’ rolling weekend.” Union slams College over job cuts The University and College Union (UCU) has slammed the decision by Bishop Auckland College to cut its workforce by over a quarter – axing up to 204 jobs. The union said the cuts would have a devastat- ing effect on the local economy, which has already seen a large increase in unemployment. The college announced earlier this week that it was being forced to re- structure after funding cuts of up to £2.9m were revealed. Staff and Union repre- sentatives have been told that the college now faces a 90-day consulta- tion period, with the equivalent of 95 full-time positions being made redundant, meaning up to 204 people could lose their jobs - almost half of the current staff number. UCU regional official Joyce McAndrew said, “This is another huge blow for education in the north-east and the last thing our local communities need right now. Bishop Auckland is making the very people redundant whose job it is to retain the unemployed and help rebuild the economy. “UCU accepts that colleges face tough choices in the current funding environ- ment, but the scale of the cuts are disproportionate and will have a devastat- ing effect on the local economy.” Principal of the college, Anne Isherwood said, “Reducing our staffing levels is a last resort, but regrettably it is one which we cannot avoid. “We need everyone locally to be supportive of the college and its employees at this difficult time.” The college sent out text messages to all its students after the announcement, reassuring them that the redundancies would not impact on their learning. Bishop Auckland MP Helen Goodman is to help pioneer a Facebook-style website designed to revolutionise the way residents across her constituency, and con-stituencies across the UK, raise concerns with their Parliamentary representa-tives.The new website, www.dig ita ldemocracy.org.uk, lets the public map and rank online the biggest concerns in their community – from library closures to rising crime – directly challenging their Member of Parliament to respond. Ms Goodman MP is one of

11 MPs from across the country who have signed up for the pilot after pledging to respond to issues posted on the site by their con-stituents.She said, “Digital Democracy has the power to revolutionise the way constituents and their MPs work together. My surgeries are still absolutely vital but the site gives me another way of staying directly in touch with thousands of people and learn about the issues that matter most to them. That’s why I signed up and that’s why I urge all my constituents to log on and do the same.”

www.digitaldemocracy.org.uk took a number of years to develop and was the brainchild of Durham ecologist Jonathan Elmer. It is funded by independ-ent charities, the Nominet Trust and Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust and aims to create an ‘online parliament’ which enables individuals to collaborate on what they decide are the greatest priorities for their constituency.Jonathan and his team are hoping support from Ms Goodman and the other ten MPs will pave the way for every MP in Great Britain to sign up to the site.

Pavement pounders keep children safeParents in the town are being urged to walk their children to nursery to keep them safe and reduce the amount of cars.Too many parents are driving to Aclet Close Nursery School to drop off and pick up their little ones and Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership (AAP) is hoping a new footpath will do the trick. The town’s nursery school raised concerns about the state of the current footpath so the

Area Action Partner-ship sprang into action to tackle lighting, the uneven surface, fencing and trimming vegetation to make it more appealing and safe for those wishing to pound the pavements instead of taking the car. There will also be shrub and tree planting at the end of the path to enhance a disused parking area. It’s hoped improvements will ease the amount of congestion in the cul-de-sac and mean there are less cars parking on

the pavement and posing a danger.Children and parents will also benefi t from a daily walk to nursery, encourag-ing physical activity. Councillors June Lee, John Lethbridge, Groundwork, parents and residents have come together with Durham County Council to deliver the project. Councillors Lee and Lethbridge have each donated £5,000.It’s hoped that work can begin on the project at Easter.

Almost £10,000 has been granted to Bishop Auckland housing estates to enable them to have the means in place to put plans into action when more lottery money is to be granted later in the year.Areas incorporating Woodhouse Close Estate, Henknowle Estate, Tindale Crescent, St. Helen Auckland and parts of West Auckland were chosen to receive grants to help people overcome social obstacles. This £10,000 will better prepare the area when the Big Local

Trust becomes operational and a further £1m will be pumped into the region.James Turner, from the Big Lottery Fund north-east said, “We want to make sure the Big Local Trust neighbourhoods are well-placed to get the most out of the money allocated to them.“So we are making funding available for a variety of community involvement activities to give local residents better under-standing of the Big Local Trust, its aims and ways of getting involved in its future activities.”

A Bishop Auckland woman has appeared before Mag-istrates at Newton Aycliffe to face six charges of fraud by abuse of position and five charges of false accounting amounting to over £50,000. On further investigation of CCTV footage the couple

Almost 150 Year 9 students at King James I Community Arts College in Bishop Auckland took part in a fun event based around being an Entrepreneur recently. The event, which was supported by staff from Bishop Auckland College, saw the 13 and 14 year-olds working in teams to form a company based around fashion. They had to come up with a business plan, marketing strategy and two products which were then judged in a catwalk com-petition.In a Dragons Den/The Apprentice style presenta-tion, they had to show in-dependent thinking, team work and creativity. The teams won points for their business development strategies, research and presentation as well as the two costumes which had to be created from sustain-able materials. Each team was given a box of materials to make their product which consisted of recycled card, paper and bio-degradable plastic.Staff and students from Bishop Auckland College's Hair & Beauty Department were on hand to create amazing hair and make-up for the models. Staff from King James I and

Bishop Auckland College made up the judging panel. Mrs Sue Dent of King James I said, "This was an excellent opportu-nity for students to show their creativity and team

work through work-related learning".The winning team, called 'Watermelon Smiles', created two outfits inspired by Christopher Kane's 2009 Spring/Summer collection.

LettersHave your say...

Dear Editor,I am enquiring if anyone knows the wherea-bouts of the following person, indeed if he is still alive!...Chris Holmes and I served our National Service together in Edinburgh about sixty years ago in 1950-52, so he would now be nearing 80. His home was Bishop Auckland.Whilst I have kept in touch with other friends of both he and myself from that time, I have so far been unable to trace Chris. If anyone has any knowledge of Chris Holmes, I would very much appreciate a phone call to me in Luton, on 01582 613731.Many thanks,Bob Norman, Luton.

Two men and a teenager have been ordered by Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe to pay compensa-tion and complete unpaid community work after causing over £1,000 of damage in a drunken graffiti rampage.About 20 homes were targeted by the men in the Cockton Hill area on February 1st earlier this year. Christopher Banks, Brian Andrew Taylor and Wayne

David Hopps admitted to charges of criminal damage after leaving the house to buy more alcohol. It is then when they sprayed rude daubings on doors and walls, with offensive comments causing much offense to the residents of the local houses. The residents said they want to see the trio punished by cleaning up the graffiti as part of their unpaid community order.

A restaurant owner has had his licence to serve alcohol suspended for 2 months after he was found to have over 50 bottles of wine on the premises that had been illegally imported.Angur Miah, from Bishop Auckland owns the Raj Balti on Fore Bondgate and was visited by customs officers in October last year. Not being invited to the real royal wedding made no difference for the children attending Bishop Auckland College Nursery. They had their own pretend wedding and a great time was had by all. Following the wedding ceremony, which was conducted by the Reverend Linda Dodds, the wedding party and guests were treated to a sumptuous wedding breakfast, which included cake, courtesy of the College’s catering staff.Nursery Manager, Jackie Bennett said, “Everyone was brilliant and really enjoyed the whole experience. Parents and staff provided dresses and suits for the

bridal party which made the day really special. The bride was reluctant to say ‘I do’ but with a little en-

After the Zurbarans recently secured their future here in Bishop Auckland, they have now been honoured further by having a rugby team named after them.Bishop Auckland Rugby Club third team shall now be known as ‘The Zurbarans’ as tribute to the 8ft high iconic 17th Century paintings by Fancisco de Zurbaran that have hung in Auckland Castle for more than 250 years.Recently it was discovered that the artworks faced being auctioned by the Church Commissioners, who maintain the bishop’s houses for the Church of England. A campaign was launched to save the paintings, and benefactor

Jonathan Ruffer bought the paintings for £15m, ensuring they remained in the north-east.The Zurbarans rugby team played their first home game last Saturday, but unforuntely lost 42-28 to Yarm. This season is the first since 1994 that Bishop Auckland Rugby Club has had enough players to field three teams. Spokesman for the club Kevin Watson said that Saturdays game was an extremely important event in their history. He said, “We have always had the Bishop of Durham’s Mitre as the club emblem, so it seems fitting when giving a name to any of the club’s teams, it must have a link to our beloved castle.”
