Bishop Auckland College is offering a support package worth up to £2,000 a year to encourage school leavers to study there - following the abolition of a key Government allowance.Students aged 16-19 enrolling this September could qualify for a £500 college allowance, along with a host of other benefits, including free travel, free meals, and freechildcare.Additional financial support includes help with course study costs, such as equipment and uniforms, and vouchers for stationery, with other incentives including free gym membership and free hair and beauty treatments. The college has topped up the allocation made available from the Govern-ment’s new £180m BursaryFund to pay for the new support package. The national Bursary Fund provides £1,200 a year for young students from disad-vantaged backgrounds or who have certain disabili-ties.Principal Anne Isherwood said the move was essential to ensure school leavers from less affluent back-grounds were not put off further education as a result of the scrapping of the £540m Education Main-tenance Allowance, which paid eligible students with a family income below £30,000 up to £30 per week.

Anne Isherwood, Principal of Bishop Auckland College.

Students offered up to £2,000 to study at Bishop College

She said, “Over half of our students were this year awarded EMA grants, which shows just how important this financial support is. We don’t want young people being deterred from giving themselves a great chance in life because they are worried they can’t afford to come to college.”The college is opening its doors on Tuesday 12th July

at 5.30pm, where tutors will be able to give advice on available courses and offer a tour of the £32m Woodhouse Lane campus.Any school leavers wanting to find out more about enrolling at the college should visit www.bishop-aucklandcollege.ac.uk or simply turn up next Tuesday between 5.30pm and 7.30pm.

A group of traders from Newgate Street’s top end - the newly named Four Clocks Quarter - have succeeded in finding a logo to represent the area thanks to help from students at a local school. The group was looking for a new logo to use on their letterheads and presenta-tion packages, so around two month ago Bernadette Rush, from fashion store Lady B Wear, contacted St. John's R.C. School in Woodhouse Lane. She asked if students could design a logo which would could be used as their future emblem. Dominic Quigley, the leader for Vocational Art at St. John's jumped at the challenge and was delighted to become involved. The school recently introduced a B.Tech course for Year 10 and Year 12 and this was a perfect exercise for the students. The class met two hours each week for around eight weeks, with twenty students being involved. Initially they worked with a sketch pad then onto A2 sheets developing art and design ideas and exploring different inks and materials. The prize for the best designed logo was £50 and the students’ work was placed on display in the Four Clocks. The difficult task of choosing the winner took place on Monday 4th July when the Mayor of Bishop Auckland John Lethbridge and Town Centre Manager

Steve McCormick, as well as members of the Four Clocks committee, selected their favourite design. The winner was fifteen year-old Adele Murray from Newton Aycliffe whose six small pictures all incorpo-rated the clock church in some format. On Tuesday 5th July, in front of a packed assembly, Mayor Lethbridge proudly exhibited Adele's work and presented her with the winning cheque. Her teacher, Dominic Quigley said, “Adele was

a worthy winner. She always produces work that is beautiful and interest-ing which shows skill and thought. She is prepared to work outside of normal lessons and she has the potential to have a career in art design”.The winning design will be taken to a local artist from Unique Arts who will convert the drawing into a digital image. The Four Clocks Quarter also presented the school with £100 towards the costs of the art materials.

Plans to demolish old Focus sitePolice and firefighters have welcomed plans for a derelict building to be demolished on the former Focus site between Tindale Crescent and Bishop Auckland. The plan is to replace the site with six shops and a large car park.Since the store’s closure in 2005, the area has become a hotspot for vandalism, fly-tipping and illegal fires. In a report to the council, developer Metric Property said the new business park would have six units and could create up to 91 jobs for the area. The news comes just after Focus DIY closed its newer

store just off the West Auckland bypass. The new community fire station opposite the Focus store on the A6072 has dealt with 19 fires in the building and 146 incidents in the immediate area in the last five years. Clearly this needs to be addressed and watch manager John Trowell said, “It’s a site that has caused us many problems. Not only are people starting fires inside, but it has also become a popular area for fly tipping which poses real hazards.”Police CSO Matthew Eckesley added, “The site is now an attractive

hang out for some youths. Removing the temptation will not only result in less anti-social behaviour there but also in a reduction of risk to them. It has been a long standing problem and the building is an eyesore – we’ll be pleased to see something positive being done instead of leaving it a trouble hotspot.”If approved the new business park would mark further progress in the areas regeneration, after three new restaurants and a coffee shop have been approved following the opening of the large Sains-bury’s and Tesco stores.

Bishop Auckland and Shildon Area Action Partnership have funded a colourful, cultural exchange for a group of talented performers.Members of the Bishop Auckland Theatre Hooligans (BATH) group have previously visited the Caribbean as part of the Jamaica Difference project. They appealed to the AAP to help fund a visit to the UK by their Jamaican counter-parts.The project sees young people making a difference to the lives of similar young people from two contrast-ing cultures, learning and developing an understand-ing of their beliefs, values and culture.

A flavour of the Caribbean comes to town

Twenty one budding Jamaican dancers, musicians and actors and their teachers will visit Bishop Auckland to share their passion for the arts with the wider community whilst learning more about the North East’s rich heritage. Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP’s Activities for Children and Young People Task and Finish Group have awarded £3,000 from the small grants fund.Stephen Elliott, BATH leader, said, “BATH and our partners are very grateful to the AAP for enabling us to bring Caribbean culture to Bishop Auckland by supporting our Jamaica Difference project for 2011.

“This project will see two groups of young Jamaicans visiting Bishop Auckland and taking part in various community events during their stays in July and September.”The first visit takes place between 6th and 15th July with a welcome event taking place at King James 1st Academy on 12th July from 6pm.The second visit takes place between 17th and 27th September. For more information, contact Debbie Connell, Community and Interna-tional Development Co-ordinator for BATH and King James 1 Academy on 01388 603388.

Charity day was a Knockout!

Pretty in pink - The Bishop Press team. The weather could not have been better for the 170 people who took part in the Butterwick Hospice’s second annual Its a Knockout tournament on Sunday 3rd July - a vast improvement from the cold September weather of last year’s event! The games are based on those from the 1970s show of the same name, which involve teams working together to finish the colourful obstacle courses in the fastest time possible. The fundraiser was held at Bishop Auckland Rugby Club, with the 17 teams of 10 people taking it in turns to battle it out across the giant, soapy inflatables.Nine teams took part in the morning session, which saw an overjoyed Bishop Press team beat three

teams from Tesco and three teams from Sains-bury’s to trump into third place, while two strong teams from Saks Hair Salon took second and first place. In the afternoon session Trimmers Hair Salon were pipped at the post by the Pheasant Pluckers. The Hospital Hooligans had double cause for celebra-tion on the day, after they won bronze trophies as well as a case of wine for the best team name.A fantastic £10,000 was pledged on the day from everyone taking part, money which will go towards the running of the Hospice.Leanne Stevens, a member of The Bishop Press team said, “It was a brilliant day and a great way to raise funds for a very good cause.”

£750 to the project to pay for indoor bowling machines to enable cricketers to practice indoors in all weather.Alan Boddy is chair of the AAP group which supports activities for children and young people. He said, “Bishop Auckland and Shildon AAP is pleased to support projects that help young people engage in healthy sporting activities.”Jason Rhodes, subject learning co-ordinator for physical education with the project, said, “Without the opportunity to access this funding, the opportunity to sustain cricket participation in schools would come under greater pressure. “The school is very pleased to be able to buy bowling machines for indoor training that will benefit many students at the school and clubs within our community.”

Bishop back on track By John Phelan

After beating fellow strugglers Middlesbrough a few weeks ago, the Bishop Auckland Cricket Club 1st team continued with their improvement to beat Barnard Castle the following week. Barnard Castle batted first and former Bishop skipper Ben Usher made 68 not out in a total of 193-5. Former Bishop pro Gary Pratt made 27. A total of 193 would have been too much for Bishop at the start of the season, but this time they responded well, as new signing Gary Nicholson from Evenwood and Matthew Cowling put together an opening partnership of 187 before Cowling fell for exactly 100. Nicholson went on to make 90 not out as Bishop won by 9 wickets. Cowling hit ten 4s and

three 6s while Nicholson hit 9 boundaries off 118 balls in his 90 not out.The 2nd team lost by 8 wickets to Barnard Castle, but on the Sunday the 3rd team beat Sedgefield by 56 runs. Bishop batted first and made 142 with Mark Little scoring 61 and Joe Robinson 32. Sedgefield replied with 86 as Bishop Under 15 bowler Liam Bell turned the game round with a spell of 5-26.On Friday July 1st however, the 1st team were back to their bad old ways when they lost to Richmondshire in the Kerridge Cup at Kingsway. The visitors batted first but tight bowling by Dan Conway and Phil Holdsworth had reduced them to 33-7. They went on to close on 102-8 with A Fleming hitting 55 not out.

Matthew Cowling and Craig George opened up for Bishop but Cowling, after a 100 in his previous innings, went first ball and George followed soon after. Bishop never recovered and were all out for 55.Last Saturday the 1st team entertained Normanby Hall and the visitors, who batted first, rattled up 219-8 with veteran Graham Shaw hitting an unbeaten 109 from 111 balls with twelve 4s and two 6s. Shaw just simply wouldn't go away because in the Bishop reply of 164-8 he took 5-42. Bishop however took 9 valuable points from the game. The 2nd team had no fixture but the 3rd team lost by 5 wickets to Barnard Castle on the Sunday.

St. Mary’s Juniors Under 14 As had a fantastic day at the TATA (Corus) Cup last Sunday (3rd July) winning the League Cup after

penalties. The Under 14 Angels also did well getting through to the final, but weren't so lucky and lost their penalty shoot out.
