Ask a Master Gardener !

Question: Is it possible to grow a lime tree from seed?Answer:It is possible to grow a lime tree from seed but it will bea slow process. It will have to be an indoor plant grownin a container because limes are very cold sensitive. Itwill grow more quickly if it is kept very warm - around30E - too warm for most houses unless you have asolarium. It will still grow at normal room temperaturesbut it will be considerably slower- it may reach fruitbearing size in 10 years instead of 4 or 5. It does needfull sun - 8 hours a day. A south facing window is a goodlocation - and you should rotate it a quarter turn everyweek so that it is not always the same side getting thesun. It can go outside in the summer but should beacclimatized over a few days both when you take it outand when you take it in. It needs a sunny location out ofthe wind.If you plant seeds you obtain from a hybrid tree, the fruityou get will not necessarily be identical (shape, size, taste, etc) but it should be close - it will still be a lime. Ifyou want to be sure of the characteristics of the fruit youget then you will have to find a source to buy the seeds. If you collect seeds from a fruit, wash them well andplant them in a pot, about 1cm deep - you can put severalin the same pot. Use a soil mix that is lightweight and drains well. Youare not likely to find something that says it is for citrus inOttawa so perhaps pick something that is for cactus. Donot put a wetting agent in the soil. Water it well and put the pot in a warm sunny place.Keep the soil moist but not soggy. You could seegermination within two weeks. When you see a sprout, carefully scoop it out and put it in its own pot - 6 cm isgood. When it is 10 cm tall, move it to a larger potwithout disturbing the root ball. Always move up justone pot size (about 2 to 4cm bigger in diameter) It is notnecessary to do this until the soil is full of roots. It shouldbe in a pot with a diameter of 30cm by the time it is 3years old. Once it gets to the height you can manage inthe house, keep it in that size pot (probably a 50cm pot)and very occasionally trim the root ball to give it someroot room and replenish the soil.

Water it deeply perhaps once or twice a week, as needed- the amount of sun it gets will determine how oftenwatering is needed. The soil should be moist but notsoggy.

Fertilize it regularly with a high nitrogen fertilizersomething with a 2-1-1 ratio or even 3-1-1. Followthe instructions on the package. Remember that a10-5-5 fertilizer has the same ratio of nutrients as a2-1-1 fertilizer but it contains MORE nutrients perunit volume - 5 times more in fact so you would useLESS of that. You can prune it lightly if needed. When it blooms you can do some pollination if youwant, especially if it is indoors where there are noinsects to help. Have fun ! Linda

School Regreening Project

A parent from Ecole St. Joseph and Ecole St. Therese in Hanmer is working on a regreening project for thoseschools and would appreciate our support. I met with her on Friday to share regreening ideas that we have usedat some of the schools which have received support through our Ugliest Schoolyard Contest. She has appliedfor funding through the AVIVA COMMUNITY FUND and is hoping to receive $150,000 for their project ifthey are winners.

To win the contest their project must receive the most on-line votes in Canada. You can support her efforts byvisiting the contest website and voting for their project (#13927). You can vote once a day for the next 15 days.If they win the first round of voting the project will proceed to the finals and you will have an opportunity to voteagain.

Go to www.AvivaCommunityFund.org/ideas/acf13927 to vote for this school regreening project. You'll haveto register in order to vote, but it's a very quick and secure process.

Bench Repair in the Park

This handsome new bench seat was built byDon Ethier. The old boards were rottingand unsafe, so rather than wait for citycrews, the Society decided to repair it.Thank you Don (and your helpers)

Last Wednesday over a dozen members clipped branches andpulled weeds at the park, making it look presentable again. Itis viewed by many and we do get many positive comments.Thank you all.
